1. Does one have to have played the game?
2. Does having played the game give one any "advantage" over those that haven't or at least help?
No on both questions. You don't have to know the game. It just helps in understanding the flavour. I'm not even sticking completely to the canon of the game and all you need to know can be taking from the opening post. 1. Does one have to have played the game?
2. Does having played the game give one any "advantage" over those that haven't or at least help?
To be on the safe side a short overview of knowledge from the game(s): the Zone is an area around Chernobyl in which paranormal things happen. A side effect of these Anomalies is the creation of so-called artifacts. Items with powers beyond current scientific understanding. And you've found the strongest one ever discovered. 'Clear Sky' was a faction in one of the games, dedicated to understanding the Zone. There are other factions in the game: Freedom, Duty, Bandits, Loners, who all have their own agendas. But I've chosen Clear Sky as 'town' for this game.
And then there is a mystical Monolith rumored to be hidden deep in the Nuclear Power Plant and there are some religious fanatics revering that Monolith. They are the only humans in the game, who are not killed or zombified by the emissions and by the Brain Scorcher and they are hostile to every other faction in the game. That's why I wrote in the opening post, that the fact that someone apparently was not knocked out during the last emission leads to the conclusion, that someone (or several someones) is among you, who is immune against the Emission - and that immunity has up to now only be seen in Monolith followers.
