Captainchicken84: Some reviewers on the Phantom Liberty shop paige said that GOG is dead because it has DRM and that you can only use it via GOG galaxy, is that true?

They review bombed it.
avatar
SargonAelther: There are several reasons for that.
1) At the moment, Cyberpunk 2077 crashes on startup without Galaxy for a lot of people. It runs fine via Galaxy.

2) The Pre-Order car is still missing its offline installer.

3) Cyberpunk 2077's Galaxy-Bound "My Rewards" now contain 16 items from variety of sources (Owning multiple CDPR games, Twitch Drops, Amazon Prime rewards), whereas the original Cyberpunk 2077 only had 5 Galaxy-Bound "My Rewards".

That being said, GOG has far more 3rd party games than CDPR games and is thus very much alive. It is just CDPR that is becoming increasingly pro-DRM. Loads of other games remain DRM-Free.

OldFatGuy: Okay, thanks. I don't have a "twitch account" and don't really know what it is, but I'm not going to open more accounts anywhere just to get some free this or that, so I appreciate you clarifying for me. Thanks.
avatar
SargonAelther: None of it is free because Twitch requires a subscription. Additionally, even then you don't get everything "for free", because you need to buy two additional subscriptions and gift them to someone else to get the rifle. At this point they should just charge $10 for that rifle directly on GOG.com, rather than make us go through hoops.
When did twitch start needing subscriptions? Agree, dumb not to just let buy from GOG directly.

Not really. You can watch Twitch streams without an account, and you just need to follow (not subscribe) the streamer) to earn the drops. I've earned a bunch of rewards in the past, unfollowed the streamer right away and still kept the rewards.

The only drawback is that you need a Twitch account in order to follow the streamer and therefore be eligible to earn Twitch Drops.

What?

Syphon72: When did twitch start needing subscriptions?
Huh? I'm pretty sure I remember Amazon claiming that Prime users get a free Twitch subscription. What's that subscription even for then? Heck, what are the subscriptions we are gifting used for then?

It means you need an Twitch account to participate in Drops and what-not.

edit: That's exactly what FlavioV said before you cut off his sentence. :-p

FlavioV seemed to be contradicting themselves even without me chopping anything off.

Oh so I can watch, follow and earn without an account.

So do I need an account or not lol? Which is it?

No, they didn't.
Passively watching is free; actively participating requires registration.

Now who's cutting off the full sentence?

Anyway, whatever, doesn't matter. If all this content is free, what are the subscriptions used for? Why are we even buying and gifting them for?

Ok, yes you are right. FlavioV's first sentence ought to be broken into two.

Unregistered users can watch streams.

Registered users can "follow" the channel (for free) or even subscribe (for monthly cost) to support the creator.
Any active participation (drops, rewards, emotes, ...) requires registration.
(edit: and sometimes even being an active subscriber to a particular channel...)

And what do we get in return for subscribing?

"it's over"
"we're back"
"it's over"
"we're back"
"it's over"
"we're back"
...

GOG is a sine wave of comas and reawakenings. We got Fallout 4 drmfree, now we have Phantom Liberty messed up, but maybe Alpha Protocol will be drmfree and good (sans removed music but that wouldn't be GOG's fault) :)
No its probably some weirdo calling everything drm.

edit: To answer your question first: If you like the content, you can opt to financially support the creator. That's it. In return you get minor benefits and the warm feeling in your gut that you helped someone continue doing what they love. ;-)

Re: CP2077 Twitch drops
I don't think that you actually have to subscribe to a creator.
There was a list floating around what exactly one had to do. Watch x mins, etc. A whole schedule which item could be earned in which week. But I'm not able to find it again atm.

The official website says:
https://www.cyberpunk.net/en/twitch-drops

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

1
Link your accounts

In order to participate in the Drop campaign and receive rewards, you need to link your GOG.COM and Twitch accounts. Click here and follow the on-screen instructions to do it! If you don’t have a GOG.COM account yet, you’ll be able to create one for free during the process.

2
WATCH STREAMS AND EARN REWARDS

Once your GOG.COM account is linked with your Twitch account, you can earn unique items by watching any channel in the Cyberpunk 2077 category with Drops enabled. You’ll find more information about upcoming Drop campaigns on our official website and social media channels.

We absolutely do.

SUPPORT A STREAMER
Yasha Sniper Rifle

Start Time: 25/09/2023, 1p.m. CEST
End Time: 21/10/2023, 11:59p.m. CEST

From 25/09/2023, 1p.m. CEST to 21/10/2023, 11:59 p.m. CEST, you can also show your support for eligible Twitch partners and affiliates playing Cyberpunk 2077 by gifting their channel 2 Twitch subscriptions of any tier. Doing so will earn you the Yasha sniper rifle as a reward.

Ah, there is the list I was looking for! I didn't scroll far enough, doh!

Well, uhm, yeah. Not good. :-/
Note: I'm not defending this practice of CDPR in any way.
No, but hopefully punk soon is. :P
