This is strange. I've had Arcanum on this laptop for months (probably over a year), but last week, out of nowhere, the little Norton Message that shows up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen has Arcanum.exe as a threat and quarantined, so that when I try to play it, it won't play.

Is it possible that somehow that file was "hijacked" into a real threat or is it almost certainly a false positive on Norton's part? And if it's a false positive, why now, after being on this machine all that time?

An update to Norton could have flagged it by mistake. Doubtful it's been "Hijacked". I don't use Norton but in my antivirus I would have to go into the program and unquarantine it.

Is there something else you need to know here? Norton got updated, it decided it doesn't like a part of Arcanum.exe, maybe a piece of code it thinks might do harm. Probably nothing to worry about, if it's a big companies game or Gog game it's most likely not doing any harm. You've been using it for awhile without any big problems. If someone had access to your computer, they would probably be doing much worse than modifying one random file. Unquarantine it, continue playing.

If possible then unquarantine and upload it on virus total and see if it's really effected or just a false alarm.
I will suggest reinstall at different folder and then upload the main exe of both games and then compare virus total report of both files as it will confirm if your system got an infection or not.

Yeah, Norton is a terribly bloated “antivirus” program. Avast tends to be a lot better. But if you ever wonder if a file is viral, you might want to check out www.virustotal.com. It will scan the file with dozens of antivirus programs and report the results.

The fact that you're still using Norton and that you trust it to protect you is disturbing. As a home user you don't need any paid software to protect you. That's money you should be spending on something else.

Yes, it's a false positive. Dump Norton as soon as you're brave enough to. Get something like uBlock for your browser too, since most threats come from ads anyway. ^^

That's what I thought. As for Norton being called poo.... it's been my experience that someone will come along and say at some point that every anti-virus program is poo (and every game is poo, and every software app is poo, and every book ever written is poo, and every movie ever made is poo).

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I restored it. Actually, discovered that Victoria.exe (Victoria complete, another gog game installed on my computer) had also been quarantined. I hadn't caught that when it happened. That's two gog games falsely identified. Did gog piss off symentec or something? lol

Oh, BTW, I don't pay for Norton. It's free with my ISP. (Xfinity... which is Comcast)
