Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: ....
If you know there is a new update and do not want to wait, then as per skeletonbow's suggestion above, restarting the Client would be a suggested way to force the Client to check for new version...

fleetcommand: Thank you! Also, thank you for developing something wonderful!

So...

I had a strange occasion when I installed AVP Classic 2000 from the client but I closed Galaxy (I thought closing the window would just hide the window but I was wrong) before the installation process would have finished. I found it strange that doing so did not stop the installation rather it finished installing the prerequisites for AVP Classic 2000 then closed their own processes. When restarted the client, it did a repair though.

Haven't found any other issues yet which can be considered as a major bug yet.

About the UI:

* I find the Search box a little confusing as it's not clear at first that it only search in your installed games (that was not just me, someone else even filled a bug report on mantis about that thinking it does nothing).
* On the other hand, there's no "one-click" way to search games in the Store. You go to the "Store" section then you still have to click "Browse games" before you can search.
* It could be great if I could go to the store page for the games I have. I sometimes find fun to check out the store screenshots, game description, user reviews and such. To do that currently, I have to go to the Store and locate my game manually
* If I put something to the cart then I go to "Checkout now" to visit the checkout page there are some suggestions below: "You might also like" and there comes a few games listed. You can add them to the cart by clicking on the price, but you cannot visit their store page to find out more about them. It would be great if clicking them would take me to the Store page.

Disclaimer: I know it's an alpha product and not sure if you need any UI things put in here at all as it's gonna change a LOT but getting these might be useful for later development.
Would be great if you could post your suggestions into mantis.gog.com as per first (sticky) post. I know that some of them are already there (like the search box) but not all :)

There should be an option to open file location for a game in Galaxy Client.
the thing is why GOG is working hard for a feature that is optional?
Because they don't want to release something 'Sub-Par' perhaps?

Let's look at is this way, it's optional yes, but look a few years down the road. The Galaxy features will be to enable GOG'ers to play online multiplayer games far more easily (as easy as it is on Steam - i.e the end user doesn't have to do a thing, it just connects and works), and online portions in modern games are not going anywhere soon.

Some of us like to download the DRM free installers and keep them safe backup'ed somewhere. BUT they'd also like their games installed in an easy to access library. Galaxy enables this.

I don't know if you've used Windows 8.1, but without the traditional 'Start' menu this new library in Galaxy will be a godsend, and it'll most likely apply to the freely available Windows 10 when it launches officially. Without the start menu, you either clutter up your desktop with folders and icons (Yuck!) or you let the 'Modern' start menu get so cluttered that you can't easily find things that you're looking for. (yeah, search works, but.. =P )

It's 03:30 right now, so perhaps this sounds really muddled or obvious. But "I" for one, appreciate a "Steam killer" and if GoG can provide this, then I'm 100% behind the time used for it.

If you don't agree with Galaxy, well, it's optional, you don't HAVE to use it =P =P =D)))

smrtgi19: the thing is why GOG is working hard for a feature that is optional?
There is a demand for something like Galaxy (both the client and the backend services) and GOG recognizes this demand but also realizes that while some people desire such software and services (or things like Steam, Origin, Uplay, Desura, Capsule and others wouldn't exist at all), other people do not desire such software/features at all and some are even opposed to them entirely. By designing their software and service as an optional component that one can choose to use or choose to have nothing to do with at all, they enable the customer to make their own decision about what their preferred experience will be and those who desire the functionality of Galaxy will likely use it and those who do not desire that functionality wont and can safely ignore it exists. This gives everyone the experience they desire and empowers the user to decide on their own instead of forcing one decision or another upon everyone.

Mind you that is why options exist for anything in life at all, because different people have different needs, desires and preferences and smart companies recognize that and try to accommodate everyone or as many people as they can, especially if they're an expanding business with an ever growing customer base with very diverse interests.

Hope this helps.

thanks I understand, gog wants customers to be fans not the other way around
Just to throw this out there:
The two issues I posted about Galaxy and resuming from hibernation (1119 and 1133) now appear to be fixed.

Galaxy 0.4.0.717 does reconnect to gog on resuming windows. The only issue now is that it takes about a minute before it recognises that it can and makes the connection. Other than that, working well, thanks Gog!
The new update Galaxy Client v0.4.0.717 has issues downloading files on my end, I haven't figured out the maximum file size it will actually download but I did find that by downloading extras for The Witcher 2 EE. any extra or game installer you attempt to download fails at the end, it always hangs at 1.0MB remaining. it seems like anything that is very close to 100MB or more fails, I downloaded the witcher 2 EE Paper Craft dolls with game's characters which is 82MB it worked but the Wallpapers that are 94MB fail to save it hangs at 1.0MB also when installing games by clicking the install button on a game page it hangs at the last little bit, it installs properly but there should be an installation progress bar or a notification that Galaxy is saving the file instead of it looking like it froze on operation

well the thing is for example Aliens vs Predator 2000, I can't play multiplayer without Galaxy, so in essence its a form of DRM because if want to play multiplayer the Galaxy is required

smrtgi19: well the thing is for example Aliens vs Predator 2000, I can't play multiplayer without Galaxy, so in essence its a form of DRM because if want to play multiplayer the Galaxy is required
Galaxy multiplayer is one part of the Galaxy product which is intended to provide an option for a multiplayer service for games that would otherwise end up either coming to GOG with no multiplayer mode at all such as the Full Spectrum Warrior games, or coming to GOG with LAN-multiplayer only. This greatly restricts the ways in which games can be played on GOG.

GOG Galaxy multiplayer service makes the backend services available from GOG to allow video game developers of games like this to be able to provide their games on GOG without disabling multiplayer, and also to allow people to play multiplayer games whether they bought the game on GOG or on Steam or elsewhere through the Galaxy crossplay service.

The Galaxy multiplayer does not remove or restrict any of your rights, so it is not DRM. It adds new functionality that would not exist if the service did not exist, and in theory it may make additional games available on GOG where a publisher would be ok with bringing their game here but do not want to release it without funcitonal multiplayer and divide their userbase.

Between the options of:

1) Buying Aliens Vs. Predator 2000 on GOG, not being able to play multiplayer at all.

and

2) Buying Aliens Vs. Predator 2000 on GOG with optional GOG Galaxy multiplayer service.

The first option restricts what you are able to do with the game by not making the desired feature available at all. The second option is identical to the first one, but adds an additional option that you did not have before which increases the amount of options available to you and to the publisher as well, and additionally may be the reason the publisher even offers the game DRM-free on GOG at all in the first place.

However, if one for any reason does not like the idea of GOG multiplayer service or how it works, they can simply choose to not use it and pretend it does not exist and they are no worse off than having option #1 above in terms of their rights under copyright law with the software.

In either case above, regardless of which scenario one prefers, the inclusion of the option of Galaxy multiplayer does not remove or restrict any of the rights granted to the customer by copyright law through the end user licensing agreement. Thus it is not a form of DRM because no rights are being managed by it.

It is nothing more than a completely optional service that does nothing more than increase the number of options the customer has to enjoy the product without removing any rights or freedoms in the process.

Far too many people redefine DRM on their own to mean "just about anything that I dislike whether there is a rational reason to dislike it or not, and whether or not it has anything to do with enforcing my rights under copyright law", but that doesn't make it a valid assessment.

Not sure if GOG wants us to report such things or not. But someone has done what GOG has asked us not to do and posted a long video on youtube of Galaxy. Clearly someone can't read or doesn't care.
I really like the client. Very happy that it is coming along.

Will the community forums be embedded in the client in the future?
OK. I just installed the client for the first time. But, do I need to uninstall and re-install my entire library to make use of it?

And I installed Chaser just to test it, and the download seems to have doubled in size. I know I'm late in the party, but am I missing something?
