Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Few suggestions:

Filters
- By Platform
-- (sub point): Let us see games that only work on Windows, work on Windows & Mac, or Windows & Linux
- Genre
-- Let us see games that are only *insert some genre here*
- Publisher/Developer
-- We should be able to see games are only by *insert publisher* or *developer here* (e.g - CD Projekt Red for the Witcher Games)

- Categories (like Steam)

All good suggestions... and for publisher/developer, make it so that they are in alphabetical order by default, and you can easily search for them somehow. The website's publisher/developer filter right now is the worst user interface widget ever made. Mentally think of one random publisher then try to find it in GOG's developer/publisher widget. There are like 200 of them in seemingly random non-alphabetic order and you can see about 10 at a time and keep going for like 2 hours until you find the publisher you want. F minus grade report on that widget. LOL I just had to get that off my chest. :)
How wonderful! I was just thinking yesterday that "oh, I won't get access in the near future" and boom, today the e-mail comes that I got a key. I just got home a few minutes ago, will check and I'll give feedback as soon as I have some formed opinion :) :)
I wonder how much longer this will remain in closed alpha, surprisingly this is one of the most polished alpha's I've been a part of...
More thoughts:

Being able to sort our library by Platform (see previous post), genre, size (the games that are less than say a Gig show before the larger games, also would like a filter for this)

Example (for genre)

--Action---
Rayman
Risen
Trine (1/2)
Two Worlds

--Adventure---
Age of Wonders
Myst

Basically show the name of the genre (Action, Adventure, strategy, simulation, role-playing, etc) then list the games you have (see above).

Also, like steam let us resize the size of the game (fit more on a single screen, without scrolling). Also let us go directly to the folder(s) that house the game files (like you can for steam, origin (and I think uplay)). Let us pause download (I don't see any way to do so except killing the client in task manager)

I think the order is by number of games they have. More games mean earlier on the list. Unsure if that still holds true.
My impression is that the current library view is just a placeholder for now to have something functional while they work on the underlying core technology and get the kinks worked out, then once the nuts and bolts are there they will likely spend time on HID and UI spit and polish. The Steam library view is actually quite good compared to any of the other gaming client UIs I've seen for library management, so they could certainly steal some of the good ideas from the Steam HID.

The current UI is fine for alpha testing purposes though, although I wish there was a "show all games" button to avoid it being paginated. :) My prefered view would be something akin to the Steam "Detailed" view which is what I mostly use, with the various custom categories on the left although layout could be experimented with to differentiate or improve upon etc.

What would be awesome is if they made the Galaxy UI itself open with a plugin/mod architecture so that users could create custom layouts using CSS. That would knock it out of the park beyond the Steam client for sure. If there's one thing I've learned about users including myself, is that we love to create and we love to mod, or to use other peoples creations or mods, and cant get enough of it. Mods, skins, themes... people love that shit. :)

Could be I suppose, although I don't think it matches way people try to use it in practice at least not me. Joel Spolsky could work wonders with that widget methinks. :)

Is it possible to set multiple locations for installation directory? I installed a few games on one partition and rest on another. I was wondering if it was possible to make the client aware of the same.

This does seem to be there, sort of, it only works from the downloaded list. The magnifying glass icon on the download completed takes you to the dir
-------------------
I did have one issue so far. Downloaded a bunch of games, while they were downloading I went to close galaxy to see if I could resume. Hit 'x' to close it, it went away, went to restart it only to be told it was still running. Check taskmgr and it was still up and running but I had no way to get back in to galaxy. So i had to kill it and re-open that way

A second attempt with nothing downloading, closing did not have the hang. So maybe it was just hiding in the background still downloading and not closing.

So first that close bug. Second a minimize to tray would be immensely helpful

Gaydorado: I had to turn off "GOG.com Downloader Mode" because when the downloader launched, it added the Galaxy Client Alpha as a paused download, and there was no way of unpausing/resuming it. I tried changing the download path and restarting the computer, but didn't work.
avatar
Fallen_Zen: The downloader issue should be fixed right now.
In case anyone else is having it: I had to restart the download (not that it had gone anywhere) but it worked after the restart. Thanks!

As for sorting options, while I'd like pre-set sorting options (since GOG already has this data for sorting on the site) I'd also like custom tagging, since it automatically covers any concerns not covered by the presets.

From what I recall, you set the installation directory, install the games, change the installation directory, install the other games. Client should recognize both. Unsure if it also works for offline installers, or only for games installed through Galaxy.

Okay, thanks. I'll check if it works that way. I tried using semicolon separator like we do in Windows path variable settings and stuff and it did not take so I posted here.

d3vilsadvocate: where do I add some feedback, here?

I really like the client, here is what I would change though:

-add borderless window mode
-text looks hard to read at 2560x1440 with DPI scaling at 125%, please add high DPI modes.
-let me chose my own client language please
-let me chose what installes games show up on the left
-add forum acces
-add a tray icon and minimize to tray option
-the games in my library do not show up in alphabetical order, it's all a mess right now

Hope I could help, keep going!
I suggest posting those ideas here, too: http://mantis.gog.com
I've installed the client on both my Windows desktop and my MacBook Pro laptop after receiving the invite today, and aside from some UI lag on the Mac it's working brilliantly. No crashes, Windows UI has no lag and the UI (in both versions) looks amazing.

Had you hidden the three UI elements that currently have "Coming soon" placeholder text, you could have sold me on this as a v1.0 full release. Really, amazing work thus far, I can't wait to see how this client evolves.

If CDP continues to offer games and clients of this much worth, we're all gonna be spoiled rotten :P

Were you maybe operating the OS X Client using MacBook's trackpad? If so, there is indeed a known bug that causes some serious UI lagging when using the trackpad, that does not happen when using mouse (even multi touch one).

However, if the lag happened when using mouse, we'd appreciate a more detailed report using http://mantis.gog.com :)
