Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

First impression of GOG Galaxy after 5min:

Bugs:

* first game I installed worked fine fine, second and third game I tried to install did not show up in the Library until I restarted the client
* default download path pointed to C:\Program Files\.... something, even so I installed the client on D:\...

Non-Bug Issues:

* download handling feels really rough, no way to reorder the queue, rather limited status reporting (download speed, etc.)
* having only installed games show up in the library is really inconvenient, as that means I can't access manuals or lookup game information within the client, other clients handle that much better and treat all your games the same, no matter if installed or not, with the option to hide non-installed games of course
* having to access the manuals via a drop-down menu is terrible, that should be a separate button and not hidden away

Overall it feels a little disappointing, the whole download behaviour is rather similar to the old client and it already wasn't good there either and access to bonus material is still to cumbersome. Better then .zip files, but nowhere near as smooth as it should be.

First impressions:

* I would like to see the community wishlist integrated into the client. It's time for it to be out of beta and be taken more seriously by GOG staff
* Installing the Galaxy client to a non-default path doesn't affect where games are going to be installed (still defaults to C:/). If I install the client on the D:/ drive, the client should assume that as my default drive for games
* Downloaded games should be within the client folder. "GalaxyClient\downloads" perhaps?
* When I'm downloading a game. The cancel option should not be under "More:. The "Play" button should change to "Cancel" while the game downloads, or put it separately in a visible manner
* It would be nice to have screenshots be saved in a folder instead of having to open Paint.

I installed Tyrian and it seemed to perform fine with some graphical hiccups though. Still, great first effort. I really wanna see this take off. My number 1 request for Galaxy is cloud saves. I really hope that can be implemented in the future. :)

Having a wishlist as part of the app client is a good idea. I'm sure it will come later on but for now I think a specific thread should be created for wishlist and this thread should only be for bug report.

One wishlist that should be part of this thread though is a bug report button in the client.

Anyway for now I'm just glad gog galaxy is finally out in alpha

the top bar(where my purchases and the login name appear) should not be completely transparent as it is a bit confusing where are the delimitation where you can click on a game icon.

Also the right slider top part can't be clicked since it is under the top bar, making it start right underneath the top bar would fix this problem

I'm a new tester. Obviously the client is in heavy development, so I don't want to talk about the missing features or my feature wishlist.

I've installed the client and downloaded a few games and everything it's fine. I think this is the important thing. Yes, for now it is just a fancy GOG Downloader with an integrated store, but I'm sure a lot of features will come.

The only complain is, ad Jotamide said, that if I install GOG on drive D: *probably* my game folder should be set to the D: hard drive in automatic (leaving the possibility to change it, of course).

Anyway, I'll play with the client a bit more in the following days and I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for reporting the bug. As for the other issues, remember this is just an alpha, a lot of functionalities that we plan are not yet implemented. In the future releases you'll be able to re-arrange queue, limit download speed etc. We just need more time to do them :) You'll be able to download the installers and bonus content through the client as well.
hmmm interesting a lot of you guys have had the download pointer issue. I have my GOG on my D: and by default it's still pointing to D: for the games
I've just found another bug. It might be a missing feature though.

I've installed Duke nukem 3d to test running a game and I found on the forum that the game need to be run in openGL, so in gog galaxy I select the game then click on the more button then "graphic mode setup" and I get an error window saying "Game is not installed"
Hi everyone,

if you're using the mac version of the Galaxy Client, and you weren't automatically updated to version 0.2.2.619 please go to http://mantis.gog.com/view.php?id=1111 and and attach your logs (as a note), as we're trying to isolate the cause of this issue.

After that you can download a new Galaxy Client installer that was just updated in the My Account section.

First of all I'd like to thank you for latest update. Galaxy no longer keeps my CPU busy at 30% while downloading/installing games. It was the only issue I've experienced with previous Galaxy release. Now it takes about ~ 5% (2-8) of my first generation i5 CPU, which is more than acceptable. I'd say, great work you have done here! : )
It'd be even greater however if client took care on installation and ask about wiping out leftovers with entire game folder at the end of uninstallation process.

Now some issues I didn't experience with 626 release:

- Graphic mode setup opens in backround when accessing, keeps Galaxy on top.

- Green screen when graphic mode set to overlay with Stargunner, Tyrian 2000 and Little Big Adventure. No problems with other graphic modes. (not entirely sure about this one, I've changed graphic drivers few days ago, however can still run games like Beneath A Still Sky, Teenagent in overlay without any issues)
update: Seems like green screen problem fixed itself.. for Stargunner and Tyrian 2000 after messing around with DOSBox graphic settings. Still occurs for Little Big Adventure though.

Secondly, in response to HeDanny's post, I assure you it wasn't my intention put your data at risk. Not at all. In the other hand I'd never use any Windows OS if I was afraid about such a risk. Some firewall/antivirus software may and will prevent certain applications from being launched with default settings. Have no idea what software and settings you're using. Very unlikely anyone get infected/cracked turning them off for a minute or two.
I guess I'm not best alpha tester with most of Windows services off and not experiencing many common issues, especially with older software.

I tried 11 games of the limited selection of my games that is available in the client (roughly 40% show up in the client library). Download and start worked fine. Only the first game that I tried hung about 2 minutes without visual feedback upon start after I pressed the "Play" button (nothing except my normal desktop environment was on the screen during that time and the computer was responsive). I guess comfort functions will be added later, as it's an alpha after all. So far so good.
Well documented non-bug: Only 8 games out of my collection of 31 show up under my library. store tab does show i own them but they do not appear under the library tab.

Features / changes: an option to skip placing icons on desktop. option to download additional content, ie manuals, soundtracks, option to designate an install directory.

Overall: runs quickly on my older machine, games download, install, launch and un install with out issues. just wish i could test it out with my whole library of games and not just eight of them.

PC Specs: 2.2ghz Pentium D, 3gb ddr 2 ram @ 300mhz, XFX amd R7 240, Win 7 64bit.

EDITED: so people will stop whipping the dead horse. :D

As mentioned in the first post, not all games are currently supported.

yep, hence the well documented part. but other than that no issues as yet.

Still not a bug. As it is says in the very first post of the thread: * not all games are currently compatible with the client, so you’ll only see the compatible ones in the alpha version of the Galaxy Client.

ETA: And ninja'd. However, it's still not a bug. A bug is an unplanned thing that shouldn't be happening; this is an expected behavior due to GOG staff having to redo launchers to work with the client.

Downloading works great for me.

There are a couple of usability improvements I would like to see, although they are probably already planned. I'll just mention them briefly.

1. Allow a double click on a game to open its more detailed view.
2. Instead of having a down arrow for the install, do a context menu.

Obviously, this is heavy alpha, and I am probably being picky. Game downloading has worked perfectly so far!
