Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Venom: In the alpha all updates are automatic and always enabled, as this is one of the core features we need to test. In the final release you will be able to set auto updates on or off for each game.

There is no need to rent any servers. You can create a new session or join an existing one. Everything else is automatic and free.

Johnathanamz: YES! So servers will be 100% free? If I want to set up a server so people can join my server 24/7?

Lets say Activision finally decides to sell Call of Duty, Call of Duty expansion pack Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Call of Duty 2 on gog.com 100% Digital Rights Management (DRM) free. If I purchase Call of Duty and I decide to set up my server and let it run 24/7? I Will not have to pay each month?

If you guys finally let Activision sell the Call of Duty video games here, please do not let them sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare until they get these features.

Or any other video game that uses Peer to Peer (P2P) as default.
Agree to everything except the last one! (although I´m not that much interested in COD...) There are many multiplayer games in which P2P doesn´t course any problems, as they don´t have any need to be synchonised each milisecond!
In other words: Do never say never!

BTW: Great to see progress at galaxy, hope PA will finally be able to land in here soon! (as indirectly promised by both you and Uber...)
Signed up!

bernstein82: Will there be an additional opportunity to signup for the beta (hopefully in a month or two)?
Once the alpha is concluded we'll move on to an open beta stage. So yes, if you can't actively participate in the alpha (test, write reports, test solutions) just wait a few weeks.
I will gladly participate in creating Galaxy awesome! :) Thanks for the opportunity!

Peer to Peer (P2P) is bad no matter what because if you are playing in multiplayer for video games that have multiplayer and use Peer to Peer (P2P), when you join a match from a persons connection if that persons internet dies it kicks every single person out of the match or moves it to another person. What if the next person who becomes the host has very bad internet connection it will lag every single person in that match except that laggy person he will be killing you in multiplayer a lot and you will end up calling him a hacker.

This is why Dedicated Servers are better with a Server Browser List.

I can chose the server I want to join if it's in my location or my country. I won't be connected to someone in Asia or Europe.

This is why GoG Galaxy should use Dedicated Servers as default.

Yes, but you are talking about Action- or RealTimeGames only! What I said was that there are cases in which you don´t need the advantages of Dedicated Servers, e.g. TurnBasedStrats!

I'm talking about video games that have multiplayer, like First Person Shooter (FPS) video games.

The Call of Duty video games, the Unreal Tournament video games, the Quake video games, the Counter-Strike video games, the multiplayer for the Half-Life video games, the Far Cry video games, Tomb Raider (2013), the Crysis video games, the Battlefield video games, the Medal of Honor video games, the Need for Speed video games, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, etc.

The only video games that do not have Peer to Peer (P2P) and matchmaking systems yet are the Battlefield video games and the Medal of Honor video games.

World of Warcraft also has Dedicated Servers and a Server Browser List.

real.geizterfahr: I thought this was already possible with this game (via direct IP)?! Assuming you and your Steam friend have the same game version (not always guaranteed with GOG's slower patching process).
I haven't bought Divinity: OS yet, but if it goes to a better sale (like 50% or so), then I just might get it.

Do we also make suggestions in the bug tracker?
Signed up... thank you, can't wait to test this. :)

Sure, just keep in mind that for now we'll be mostly focused on any bug reports, but any (constructive;) feedback will not be ignored.

What the hell? TurnBasedStrats do have multiplayer! One of the most important multiplayer games in history, BattleForWesnoth, was a turn based game!
And yes, I agree to your point in general. But your post generalizes multiplayer games and that´s no good! Many games aren´t ping-sensetive

YES; Shooters do need dedicated servers as a standard. YES, RTS does need the option to use dedicated servers! Nope, not everything needs dedicated servers!

Can I get a answer to my question? Not the one you answered, but I replied to your answer.

Just making sure you understand what I'm talking about.

This thread is for the Galaxy Client Alpha test, let's not change the subject.

I know there are turn based strategy video games that have multiplayer.

It's why I said I'm talking about First Person Shooter (FPS) video games and well the 3 RPG video games I named.

Mass Effect 3, Tomb Raider (2013), and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Venom: If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used)
Why would this be an issue? I assume the client will be pretty lightweight and the patches pretty small like Steam. Can you at-least accept or deny an update from occurring? If so I won't worry about it as I get unlimited usage during a certain time in the late night/early morning hours, I'll update then.
