Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

Hi everyone,

we've released the 0.7 version a couple of minutes ago, here's the changelog:

- Back/Forward navigation in the Store section
- Import Folder - it is now possible to import a game which is not compatible with the client, by clicking the game in the Library section and choosing ‘Import Folder’ from the More dropdown
- Startup page option - it is now possible to decide if the client should start on LIBRARY page, STORE page, or continue previous session
- Search option - you can press enter in the search field to continue searching in the Store
- Option to Show Game Folder added to MORE menu
- New sidebar sorting options (sort by name)
- External links will now be forwarded to the system browser
- Wishlist option added to the LIBRARY menu
- Community option in the STORE menu
- Forum Replies option in the ACCOUNT menu
- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)
- Improved ‘Last Played’ information, which should now show the time of the user stopped playing the game, rather than started playing the game
- Fixed uninstallation issues on Windows
- Fixed an issue which prevented using Paypal, when buying a game
- Fixed an issue which prevented from displaying Terms and Agreements when registering new account
- Fixed some issues when installing and uninstalling DLCs
- Bugfix: client will now not allow dragging elements onto its window
- Fixed memory leaks, causing to crash the application when downloading lots of games
- Fixed a bug which was causing the client to crash on exit
- Fixed an issue, which sometimes caused the client to duplicate the news on game view

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: On top of what Fallen_Zen said, I'd add that the big benefit of a separate download folder (and one of the reasons why we've did it this way) is that download of an update, which with auto-updating can happen at completely random times, never locks you out of the ability to launch the game except for the very brief time when files are being moved*. So, even if a 5GB download of a game update would kick in, in the meantime you can still launch and play the game while the download finishes in the background and waits until you're done playing. For bigger updates or users with a slower connection it should make a huge difference.

*As for the theory that the solution above makes installation / updating process longer - it shouldn't as we move update files once we're ready, not "copy" them. Users who experience longer than usual finalising / updating / installation are kindly asked to report specific games and OS to mantis - we'll investigate this issue separately.
I have a question regarding the installing process. When does it change from "Downloading" to "Installing"? I assumed that if it was "installing", it meant that all files had been downloaded already but I just checked the logs and I've gotten a few messages like this one with different file names when it was already installing:

So, my suggestion is to highly compress games with something like FreeArc, so games size gets lower and so the download time. Isn't cool download more than 30 Gb games, and i know most GOG games are much much more lower size, but still, in the future release of Galaxy could be cool to download those low sized games.

I think the main problem about this will be decompress it once donwloaded, but that will be like the Install time. PlayStation Store does something similar, but they compress their games with the worst format to it, like .ZIP or something worst so is not worth it.

Game compression is planned for the future. This was stated on Mantis.

The compression is a planned feature and it will be there. Nevertheless thanks for suggestions. :)
Man, I've been so addicted to Mount & Blade over the last month or so that I have not been following the forums at all and I missed out on this announcement until now which kind of sucks as I was very much in deep anticipation over the Galaxy alpha/beta testing. Anyhow I've freed up metric gobloads of space on my hard disk for Galaxy game installation/testing and signed up for the alpha test so I'm looking forward to that whenever I get my invite.

Does anyone know what the approximiate lag time is from sending in a request until receiving an invite by chance? I'm rather eager to get testing and doling out feedback/bug reports to help get it polished off. (pun not intended). :)

Real exciting to see this happening and finally nearing official release!

They send it out in batches, so it depends when the next batch is.
I had to wait about a week or so.

I am glad to hear that! For now on i am waiting next Alpha release since i have noticed in mantis site that most bugs i have found already has been reported.

The APP has crash some random times but i have not been able to reproduce those bugs, so i am not sure if those errors should be reported.

LZMA has very high compression and very very fast decompression which would seemingly lend itself well for game distribution methinks. This is the default compression algorithm in the "xz" and "7zip" archiver utilities. I've shrunk some games down to 50% with it, although most get anywhere from 5% to 30% reduction with an average of about 20%.

That's normal. Galaxy is still in alpha stage and doesn't support all of GOG's catalog yet.
Hey guys, is there any way to stop a download other than just exiting the client? Had a little adventure with a 10 GB game that I wasn't expecting to download, as it seemed the client was just adding games I already had installed, until it hit that one.
