Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

I wouldn't really say this is a bug, just simply a weird design choice so going to ask here... but is Galaxy like really slow at loading (ie My Activity, Friends Playing... ect) page for each game for anyone else? Apparently these are all loaded separately instead of at one time, so it takes forever for Galaxy to finish loading when you got a lot of games installed. Which in turns takes a long time for a game to begin installing or updating.

Fallen_Zen: We're working on those options, but can't promise dates yet. :)
I wanted to add to issue #1, but it has been marked resolved. Is there any way to reopen it to add a comment, or should I just open a new issue?

These pages you mentioned are not yet implemented, that's why they state: "Coming soon...". They won't load now :)

Fallen_Zen: The client does not download installation files but ready to play games. Offline installers are coming at a later date.
May I ask then why does it need 2 folders? One to download the files, and another to install it? Steam downloads the files in a ready to play state directly where the game is installed. Galaxy should do the same.
Also, I think the copying process is what makes the installation so slow. I reported a couple of pages back that after the client crashed while installing Divinity: Original Sin, it took 2 hours to finish installing the remaining 16% of the installation (not to confuse with the download that had already finished). I installed Flatout 2 yesterday, which is a 3GB download, and the installation took around 45 minutes.

Because we don't want to replace files in an already installed game in case of an update if the download fails. When everything downloads fine, then we replace files or you'd end up in a partially updated (broken) game.

The features are not added yes, but the pages are still there... ie the place holder pages, and they do load when you first start Galaxy. These all load separately and it takes a good bit to finish when there a many games installed. So it can take a few min to get to the point were you can install or update a game/ games because this doesn't happen until Galaxy get's done loading.

Correct me if I didn't understand you correctly. The game views pages load for you very slowly? Could you screen record that and create a ticket with logs on Mantis if you haven't already :)

Yes the game view pages load slowly ( at-least to me) because Galaxy loads each of them separately. If I manually go through each game page and press connect this makes it a little faster to get them all loaded.

Will post on Mantis though, wasn't sure if I should or not for this issue...

Every little thing helps us to make the client better, thanks! :)

Steam "used" to install directly into the game folder. But for the past year or so it changed to use a seperate 'Downloads' folder within 'SteamApps' to store the temporary downloaded files / patched files, and upon completion moves them to the correct "SteamApps / Common" set of folders. You probably don't notice this as it's been made seamless into the Steam client (i.e you the end user can't choose where this downloaded folder resides).

So Galaxy isn't too different in that respect, apart from the freedom to choose where the temporary files are downloaded to. =)

Just a little question, are we supposed to report "interface" issues (for example the "installed" icon not displayed correctly in the "My Library" section, possibility to "enqueue" an already installed game, game's "screen" that display "not connected" even thought you are connected and downloading, etc...) or is it useless as the interface is still basically just a temporary place holder ?
Awesome to see alpha out!

I would like to help out with testing but if you expect me to test mostly multiplayer features, I won't be probably the best choice but it doesn't look like it is the case according to first 2 posts.

This was one of the first things I noticed and wondered about. I'm new to this quality assurance type work.

The genre also gets shifted slightly to the right on installed games in list view for me.

Fallen_Zen: Because we don't want to replace files in an already installed game in case of an update if the download fails. When everything downloads fine, then we replace files or you'd end up in a partially updated (broken) game.
On top of what Fallen_Zen said, I'd add that the big benefit of a separate download folder (and one of the reasons why we've did it this way) is that download of an update, which with auto-updating can happen at completely random times, never locks you out of the ability to launch the game except for the very brief time when files are being moved*. So, even if a 5GB download of a game update would kick in, in the meantime you can still launch and play the game while the download finishes in the background and waits until you're done playing. For bigger updates or users with a slower connection it should make a huge difference.

*As for the theory that the solution above makes installation / updating process longer - it shouldn't as we move update files once we're ready, not "copy" them. Users who experience longer than usual finalising / updating / installation are kindly asked to report specific games and OS to mantis - we'll investigate this issue separately.
