Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: Could you post to mantis.gog.com a video showing how it looks outside of installation / download on your system together with details about your OS version and SP installed as well as antivirus / firewall used, together with your PC config (CPU, RAM, HDD/SDD...)? I'm not claiming the Client is times faster than a browser or anything like that, but judging by your description it sounds much worse than it should be...
I'll try to replicate it. Does not happen ALL the time, but MOST of the time.
I ABOSLUTELY LOVE THE GOGG CLIENT. Seriously amazing to use, especially for an alpha product. I do have a couple criticisms for the library page though, and they both have to do with streamlining the installation of a game. Nine times out of ten, when I go to a game in my library it will be to install it. Installing a game should be a one click, or one double click process. Either placing an instant install button next to the drop down menu (which very well designed, love the huge buttons), or allowing a double click to immediately install are both good ideas. The second issue I have is with the EULA loading. It doesn't take much time, but the brief two to three second pause after I click 'install' is enough to make me take my hand off the mouse. The two simple solutions I had for this were to pre-load the EULAs with the library (which would take up a small amount of time and memory depending on your library size), or add an option to settings and/or on the EULA pop-up to auto-accept GOG EULAs. Additionally, making the EULA a drop-down from the install button, and replacing 'Install' with 'Accept' after the game is selected for installation would also streamline installation at least slightly.

This is just my preliminary blurb from using the client to manage games, and I really do love how smoothly it works so far.
I just thought of another suggestion to make for the Galaxy client that I haven't seen anyone mention yet. I know Galaxy client/service will be including some social networking features before long including friends and chat and stuff like that, and one thing I'd like to see is for it to either be implemented in such a way that integrates directly into a pane or slider or similar of the primary UI. In other words for the UI elements of the friends online/chat interface to become part of the UI in a side pane or similar rather than as a separate detached popup window like it is on Steam. I think it's fine to have an option to let UI elements pop out or even to have it that way by default if someone thinks it should be - but please make an option at least to have all UI elements all directly attached to the main window. Some of us have large screens that can divide up the space to useful things and have plenty to spare for content areas etc. and dislike a single app having multiple open windows that get hidden behind each other when you switch from one app to another. I really hate MDI apps, it's so 1990s... :)

To further clarify, what I mean is I prefer something akin to Facebook chat where it is a part of the web page off to the side, and not some separate popup window like on Steam.

Greetings,
So far, I've encountered a few of issues with the Galaxy Client. First one with M&B: Warband, I too have the issue where it tells me my installation is broken when I install it. I own the Base Game and the Napoleonic Wars DLC. I noticed that I would get a similar error when I downloaded and installed it via the website and installer programs. When I used the Website/installer method this happened when I installed the latest patch, which told me there was a Checksum error. However, in either case, the game starts fine if you start it from the desktop icon. I would assume that it would also work if you clicked the exe from the folder to which it is installed.

Second: There is no box art for Hearts of Iron 2 or Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday, either in your library or in your installed games. On the installed games sidebar, there is a spinning loading icon as if it is trying to load the box art, but it never loads and keeps spinning forever.

Third: This could be part of the individual game installations, but on games that run on DOSBox, the Graphics Settings window that you access from the game pages drop-down menu needs a setting to select the fullscreen resolution. It has one for windowed mode, but I end up having to go into the games directory and manually configuring DOSBox to get the resolutions I need to run on my older Fullscreen Monitor.

Fourth: There are several games in the Library where it doesn't work when you click "Store Page and Reviews" on the games drop-down menu. It mainly seems to work for games with expansions or DLCs where each separate part is in the Library. In that case, each separate part needs to point to the correct store page for the entire game.

Other than that, everything else seems fine, so far. I will post again if I find anything else that needs mentioning.
Hello,
is it possible to have the option to be able to add arguments to the game launcher? as in "Folder/game.exe" -noconsole
and such so we can access more of the game options like you can do on the desktop.
a sort of launch options.

thank you.
Sorry to report the following:

Selected "Temple of Elemental Evil" for installation.
Received a half-dozen of the attached pics.

megasthenes: I currently don't have the time to scan all of the thread but: will there be an Galaxy Alpha Linux Client?
I just got my invitation and installed it in windows, which only is my side-OS and was pretty impressed with what's already there. Now having that on the best OS would be overwhelming.

LADAYA: So when the GNU/Linux client is coming out? I got an invitation, but I don't use Winblows.
It will come out eventually. Patience.
It's 100% that we WILL have it, we just can't guarantee that it'll be released the same time - but we'll do our best to not extend the wait :)

Overall this is brilliant. For me at least it has worked without a hitch so there are no bugs for me to report right now. I'll post some suggestions though.

Suggestions

Note: the below suggestions are made fully in the knowledge that this isn't complete and you may already intend to add some of this stuff anyway. Some of it is picky and probably not relevant to the more immediately pressing concerns.

- Make it possible to pause downloads without cancelling them. Add the usual pause, download and cancel icons somewhere relevant and visible.

- Amalgamate the download (bottom left button) menu and the main list of games on the left. It's only a couple of extra details too add and I don't see anything of value being lost in doing that. You could make it so that games awaiting installation / updates are down the bottom of the list and are moveable so as to determine the order of downloading.

- Alternatively if the above isn't workable then make each entry in the download list smaller so it's easy to prioritise them when there's a lot in there.

- Add possibility of either downloading installers as per the Downloader, or backing up games into compressed files. That would help make the client more complete. Otherwise the best option is to download the installer, install, then associate the installation with Galaxy. Which is needlessly fiddly.

- The Import Folder option's Browse for Folder window could be improved by having the installation folder (in my case D:\Games\) open by default and for that window to be scrolled down to the point where that folder is in that list. A tiny tweak, but that would certainly help speed things up dramatically when there are a lot of games to associate with the client.

- Text in the Community forum section looks a little blurry.

- Maybe include community and support as options alongside Store and Library, rather than in Store's menu.

- Some DOS games (I noticed this with Dark Forces) could benefit from additional options. For instance, there's a option to open up the graphics settings, but not one for the controls. Generally anything which gets a link in the games start menu folder should be included on the game's page in the client.

- Include an option to open up the game's install folder (as appears in the Downloader).

It's a pretty safe bet that anything downloaded from GOG.com is not infected with any virus or trojan, and that if the executable or other files are in fact infected that they weren't downloaded infected from GOG but became infected on the system they're being detected as infected on. So the most likely scenario is that either your virus scanner is triggering a false positive, or your system is infected and has infected other executables that are on the system including things downloaded from GOG.com. Virus scanners are notoriously terrible with this especially for executables they have no record of to start with. I've even seen them trigger false positives on common software like Google Chrome or similar. The free scanners seem to be the worst at it too.
Galaxy need's a pause button for downloads, and I can't wait for the achievements and everything to be added.

I haven't ran into a bug yet :) good work dev's.

the blues already said that they will be putting in a pause button. Can't recall if they said next update or later then that.
Looks like a good start so far. It needs more polish of course. Hopefully this turns into something that can compete with Steam quality - wise. Whenever Steam and GOG have the same game, of course I'll go for the purchase with GOG. It will be interesting to see how this turns out as I hope this will cause GOG to become a lot bigger and more popular than it currently is. It will be better for the world of PC gaming if GOG Galaxy is well received.
I'm sure this has been asked before but would you consider adding start minimized option? It's the only thing I have popping up on my screen on reboot or system startup.
I love it, just need some better community features...
Just wanted to say thanks for the work you guys are doing! Galaxy is better than ever.

Which brings me to a question.

Does anyone know if the Witcher 2 achievements are working yet? They are showing up in the Galaxy client but I haven't gotten around to downloading Witcher 2 again after the last Galaxy update wiped all my game installs.
