Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Seems like a lot of people getting codes recently! Hope you are all enjoying it. Checked my old account and still no luck there but thought I'd make an account for my new gaming user name (WhiskeredWolf); any who, when i signed up i accidentally put .co.uk in my email and not .com, changed the email for my account back to .com but cannot resubmit on the alpha sign up page, any idea how I could go about this just in case I get lucky in an upcoming batch of alpha invites? =D
if i install a game directly through the client, does that mean, that i don't need the extra hdd space for the installation files?
Is there a way to remove a game from downloading? Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition keep crashing my client. Tried removing the temporary download files but that didn't solve it.
I've been checking this thread every few months now, watching the progress of Galaxy and hoping for an alpha invite.

I've finally seen some screenshots of the interface which has me excited for its eventual release.

I like how they plan to include time spent on a game. Does anyone else know what other features will or may be included prior to or post release? I'm not asking for a massive feature bloat like steam (which is one of the main reasons I'm really trying to stop using steam completely), but something like a friend's list and *rudimentary* chatting abilities (in and out of game) would be nice. Apologies if this has been answered already, I have not been able to find the answer on this.
Hi guys, GOG galaxy won't start my games. It says I've played them but they don't come up on my screen

It happens for me too when i run Mount and Blade. It's counter gets updated when i start game in launcher and that's it.
Other games are ok with Galaxy. I have 8 installed.

iirc, if you press "More" button, there will be an option to cancel download.

de_Monteynard: Well, I have decided to give Galaxy a try after GOG sent me an invitation. While my general experience is one of disappointment (even when taking into account this is a closed alpha), one thing that tickled me the wrong way the most was the fact that the client just created a folder "GOG games" on my C: drive without asking for permission! When I installed it in Programme Files, I expected that downloads of all sorts would be done there or at least, that when I started the Client for the first time, I would be asked about my install/download preferences.

My proposal to the team responsible is to give users the choice of folders they wish to use BEFORE the Client starts creating stuff on its own in places that may not be best suited for the task.
That will likely be the case when the software is released. This is alpha test software however and can in theory completely destroy your OS within the realm of possibilities (although that's unlikely to actually happen). Embracing alpha testing means one puts their system, software and data at risk. Should not be used on a production machine nor a machine containing important data even if it is just video game data etc.

It'd probably be better if they made it so people have to answer a questionaire or something in order to get an alpha test key as it appears lots of people are installing it either expecting an finished polished product, or a near finished product without any glaring issues or major features. :)

Seriously, I don't think a lot of people understand exactly what an alpha test is for - not that they necessarily should by default either, but then if they don't they probably shouldn't be alpha testing or they're likely to become upset and not have their expectations met.

A good way of thinking about an alpha test is to have absolutely zero expectations except that it will destroy your computer and everything on it. Then when it doesn't, it feels like winning the lottery... or something like that. ;oP

Indeed. If you install game through Galaxy, intermediate installer is not needed.
If all you need is an installer, you can download it through "More -> Download Extras".

Fallen_Zen: Yes, playtime is stored on our servers and attached to your account :)

Geralt_of_Rivia: Is there a way to opt out of any data collection?
Good question, most likely they'll put an option in to disable that feature but it might be a good idea to throw a feature request in mantis just so they have it tracked somewhere. I'm not a fan of sharing data either generally but for gaming I tend to prefer a more open public or semi-public profile for that sort of thing. :)

yep i don't wanna get tracked when and how much i played my games eighter. especially the toilet breaks :)
I'd love if controller navigation and a list of controller supported games was in a future version :)
Don't know if GOG is open to suggestions. If so, I'd like an option to remove imported games.

Thinking about Galaxy features from the intro video and the optional concept, some of us may want to use Galaxy for stuff that may have multiplayer or achievements, and just keep games we don't want to use with Galaxy out of Galaxy. Example, I may want to play Dark Forces or Rayman without Galaxy, but use it for Aliens vs. Predator online mode.

I know I can play games without needing to boot up Galaxy, but it would be nice if the option was there. This way imported games can be removed without having to completely uninstall them.

Thanks! It took a few tries but finally managed to cancel the installation. The client does seem to work fine now also. :)

cpvantom: Thanks for the quick response, it makes sense for shared workstations. I don't have multiple accounts on my mac but wouldn't all userids need to be privileged (Admin) in order to have write access to /Applications? If i were to share my mac, i certainly would not let others to have privileged userids. External volume is out of question in my case, osx runs on the SSD and the second disk (HDD) is an occupied ntfs partition which would not provide the desired performance.
Games installed from GOG Galaxy have have read/write access to anyone who uses your computer.

Grargar: I haven't tried the client yet, but do the shortcuts generated by the installed games launch the client when run? If yes, will there be an option to create galaxy-less shortcuts?
In the next update there should be an option to install the games without the shortcut on the desktop.
