Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

DCT: no the shortcuts do not launch the client since unlike steam it doesn't need to "verify" that your running a legit copy or what ever the reason for making Steam shortcuts launch the game via steam. The Shortcuts installed by Galaxy(at least currently) are the same as what you get from a regular GOG installer.

And yes the blues have said that they are putting in a option to turn off the client making shortcuts after a game installs, possibly in the next update. I would link the post where they say that but I rather not comb through pages of posts.

Grargar: I see. Thanks.
did someone try to install avp classic through galaxy alpha client? do we get 2 shortcuts, one for singleplayer and one for multiplayer, which starts galaxy?
After attempting to submit a ticket to http://mantis.gog.com and just getting a 2800 error, I file this here.
"
Installer not informing of failure (Shadow Warrior 2013)

- Problem in short
Attempting to download Shadow Warrior 2013, the system downloaded upto 61% of the game and then stopped.
GOGalaxy continued to report it was using 0.4MB/s although nothing more was being downloaded.

- What I was doing
I set GOGalaxy to download Shadow Warrior 2013 and then went out for a few hours. When I returned.
I chose to attempted to buy Technobabylon through the GOGalaxy client, but when I set it to PayPal and clicked the by now button GOGalaxy just sent me to my library. It showed a second window that could not be accessed in the background, that would close when I clicked the little X when hovering over it in the bottom bar, but clicking on the window to open it would not work.

I noticed that there was an issue after I attempted to buy Technobabylon again from GOG, but this time in Firefox and the computer froze after I clicked the paynow button on PayPal.
When I closed down Firefox and checked my library, the game was not in my account but PayPal had processed the payment.

I checked on GOGalaxy and it showed it was still installing. 61% at 0.4MB/s, so I left it a little while, but when I returned to it, it was still showing the same amount and speed. I checked my library via GOGalaxy but nothing new had been added, and the only change is the movement of my games.

So I looked at the log file and found that GOGalaxy had timed out.

After forcing GOGalaxy to a close I am attempting another install with Men of War - a smaller game.

Also - the internet on all computers in the household was heavily slowed down during this time as there is no way to control how much bandwidth GOGalaxy uses. So even when it was no longer installing anything it kept everything else slow as it was still connecting.

Reproduction-
!This costs money - so for GOG only!

-Begin installing Shadow Warrior 2013
-Attempt to by Technobabylon via GOGalaxy using PayPal
-Close pop-up window
-Go on internet using Firefox
-Access GOG and attempt to buy Technobabylon again via PayPal

So -
1 - Can we please have a "Pause / Resume" button for the installation for those of us who have dodgy internet connections.
2 - Can there please be a way to control how much of our connection GOGalaxy can use, as can be done with the Downloader.
3 - Could there be a visual response that the game has hit a problem in installing. Getting no indication there was any issue causes one to question the system in action.

So here is my small report after two days of using Galaxy :

Despite there is a lot of small bugs, UI glitches and that not all games are supported, soundtrack DLCs are missing etc... it's very nice, stable and pretty usable :D I think I will be using it from now as a main portal to GOG :D

As of now, the most missing feature for me is possibility to pause/resume downloads, and to set download speed limit (similar to options in GOG Downloader)

But it's all quite easy to solve, soo -- well done, GOG!!!

Well, I have decided to give Galaxy a try after GOG sent me an invitation. While my general experience is one of disappointment (even when taking into account this is a closed alpha), one thing that tickled me the wrong way the most was the fact that the client just created a folder "GOG games" on my C: drive without asking for permission! When I installed it in Programme Files, I expected that downloads of all sorts would be done there or at least, that when I started the Client for the first time, I would be asked about my install/download preferences.

My proposal to the team responsible is to give users the choice of folders they wish to use BEFORE the Client starts creating stuff on its own in places that may not be best suited for the task.

Karboxyd: I'd like to be able to stop or pause the whole downloading/updating process as well.
Yeah, the ability to pause downloads needs to be one of the first things added.
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but when my firewall (Comodo) needs permission to allow something to proceed, the primary screen locks up - and can't be interacted with, preventing access to the Firewall popup.

Workaround for this is I CTRL+ALT+DELETE and wait (around 1-1.5 minutes) for the LOCK/LOG OFF/Shutdown menu, and select the START Task Manager option. From then, I can access the Firewall popup to allow the action.

Marcinkonys: My main question is, do you guys keep playtime in your servers? I absolutely love the feature of seeing playtime statistics, as I have a spreadsheet that I update like once or twice a year with playtime data. Will I still see it when I reinstall Galaxy?
avatar
Fallen_Zen: Yes, playtime is stored on our servers and attached to your account :)
Is there a way to opt out of any data collection?
avatar
Jennifer: Yay! I got to install the client today too :-D

Is the client meant to save game installers after the game is already installed?
avatar
skeletonbow: No, choosing "install" in galaxy does not download the standard installers, it downloads a pre-installed version. Information on this was provided earlier in the thread by a GOG blue. You can download the regular installers by clicking on "More" however if you want to archive backups in a similar fashion to how we do it now outside of Galaxy.
Thanks! I didn't think to check the Extras for the installer but I see it now and it's working fine :)

I'm surprised they went with the Steam way of handling things. I thought it would be more like Origin where it has the option to save the installer after it's done with it. Not to mention the Steam way is horrible for games with mods because it overwrites the modded files a lot. However, at least Galaxy has the option to turn off updating for real so that we don't have to update the game unless we want to. I like that it has (or will have) the option to roll back from an update as well. That's much more user-friendly and convenient.

avatar
skeletonbow: Just pure speculation on my part but I imagine they might provide an option in the future to point Galaxy to look for a local copy of a game installer first before pulling one down the way it does now, then fall back if a local archive isn't present. That makes technical sense for optimizing the end user experience at least the way many of us will probably want to use it anyway. Right now however it is important that they get a lot of alpha testing of the actual code that downloads things the way it does now. Conveniences will be something to come later on I suspect.
Yeah, that would make sense. I figured they would do that to save themselves some bandwidth if people already had the installers backed up, but I guess it's not a priority right now while they test more important features.
Here for feedback on GOG Galaxy?

apehater: did someone try to install avp classic through galaxy alpha client? do we get 2 shortcuts, one for singleplayer and one for multiplayer, which starts galaxy?
Just one shortcut. If Galaxy is not running, multiplayer won't work.
Hello, just started using the alpha client. Everything is working fine except for one game I tried, Tie fighter collector's edition. I have not installed this game in the past so i thought I would install it using the alpha client, the game would download and install but would not play, dosbox would start and then close and then nothing happens. So I uninstalled the game but the game folder and files would remain on my hard drive so I had to delete those manually and download the game the old faashioned way from GoG.com, I installed the game and it runs fine. The galaxy client automatically detected that the game was installed and I can now play the game via the galaxy client now.

Not a huge problem but I thought I would post it here and let you know.

The target folders can be changed in the options. But I agree that in the final version the the setup program should ask for them when installing Galaxy.

Thanks for pointing it out and yes, I did find and change the folder settings the moment I saw what was going on. My post was to point out that such behaviour is usually reserved to less than friendly programmes.
And one for the wishlist:
Games with multiple launchers (Like: F.E.A.R. which has 3 (main game, and the xps)) should either allow to define a default .exe (which is noted in the game title) which is started from the "Play" button, or have multiple buttons. I'm currently playing through Extraction Point and it feels awkward to always launch it from the dropdown menu.
Welcome i have just recive Galaxy Client Alpha test invitation
After instalation of client i decide to reinstal my GOG library for testing , both run only and while playing and i didnt have any real trouble, no errors no crashes all games run well didn't have any real issues.

the only problems i had:
TRANSISTOR soundtrack is not avaible in client for download (DLC)
Durring importing incubation client was claming its unable to finish importing game, but process *was* successful.
Red Faction on client Wishlist( unavailable on GOG)

Three games was unable to install at first time becouse of DISC ACCESS PROBLEM but they did install eventually.
