Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

BKGaming: EDIT 2: Installed Tyrian 2000 directly from the server using no standalone installer, installation still broke. :(
avatar
JMich: This does seem like an access issue. Unsure if it's the source or destination directory that is causing the problems.

Does the Tyrian files remain in the ProgramData folder or not?
I have my downloads folder set within the Galaxy Client for easier access... but as far am I aware, the files still remain even when an installation breaks. GOG staff are looking into the ticket I submitted though, so hopefully I'll hear something soon.

From what I've seen, the files are downloaded in the "Download path", then moved to the "Library path". If an installation is successful, the "Download path" should no longer have the game's files.

Either way, hopefully GOG will have some insight about the issue.

My files always remain, even with the games I have have successfully installed. Those updated files remain in the download folder. It appears to me that Galaxy downloads them and then launches an installer behind the scenes to install the new files. All downloaded files have a standard GOG installer inside.

Wait, what? They shouldn't. You mean you also get a setup_{NAME}_#.#.#.#.exe file with the downloads?

Yep.

EDIT: There are regular game files too, so it's kind of weird.

Ok, so I just queued ArmA 2 to check it. Download size is ~16GB, installer is ~12GB. So it can't be game files + installer.

Curiouser and curiouser...

I haven't queued an entire game unless you count Tyrian which I deleted since it broke, but these are just for updates after a install with a regular standalone installer.

I get a folder such as ########## inside will be some game files, and another folder with the same game number, then inside that folder might be more game files and and always a GOG installer.

EDIT:

Something is defiantly not working right though, I just installed the Witcher Adventure Game, and Galaxy says it updated and is ready to play... but based on what it downloaded, it doesn't appear those files were ever actually copied to the actual game. -.-

EDIT 2: Now I'm wondering if I install Spelunky and manually copy over the downloaded files if it would then work.

btkee: hey guys
i've been waiting for my invite
would you mind sharing some pics of the client interface?

BKGaming: We are not allowed, see first post.
oh thanks
Hi everyone,

thanks for responding to our alpha tests, we're very grateful that so many of you are willing to help us out with testing.

But I would like to re-iterate a few points from my original post:
- please refrain from posting screenshots and first impressions
- if you want to report a bug, please do it in our bug tracking system, as linked in the invitation email
- the codes you receive are meant for you, so please don't do contests, giveaways or trade offers

Also remember that this is an alpha, witch means that this is an early release to test some core technologies, not the final product. This means some obvious functionalities are intentionally not included, but that does not mean they won't be included in the final product.

Thanks again for your help!

Update for everyone that signed up: today we will send out next batch of invitations. Next batch after that will be later this week, after we release an updated version of the Client Alpha.

Quick question, would discussions like the one me and BKGaming had be better here or in the bug tracker? Or would PMs be better?
Just noticed this thread, I'm happy work on Galaxy is progressing!

I'm not really the right person for the alpha since I don't have the time (nor the technical prowess :D), but I'll probaly sign up for the beta.

Good luck guys!

Sorry Venom if we posted to much info, JMich has been a big help tracking down my issue... but if needed we will take it to PM.
Dear GOG,
I am very much looking forward to GOG Galaxy. It's embarrassing to me, but several times over the last few months I chose not to buy a game on GOG because I am such a lazy steam user and want a local, snazzy client to manage and explore games.

I was skeptical at first, but this does seem like a good investment if GOG can lay a solid foundation/framework.

Hey JMich,
You can use our bug tracker or PM directly to me, I'm on the Galaxy Client team so can help you a lot faster.
