Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Martek: So.. I got an email from GOG 'inviting' me to check out the Galaxy client, with a clickable 'here's your code' link to get the alpha.

But.. I don't care about any multiplayer and would just be wasting time 'testing' that.

Are the 'other parts' (non-multiplayer aspects) also being tested? Are they well-enough along to be worth testing?
Well since this isn't a test of the Multiplayer api, they already did that with the Witcher Adventure game and Aliens vs Predator. This is just a test of the basic core features of the client downloading and installing the games and running games via the client.

Kristian: Yes, you can use to among other things download/install games.
Ok cool, thanks.

Is the alpha far enough along that I would be able to specify my download location and my install location? (I heard the Galaxy client itself installs only to a particular path - just for the alpha... - I can live with that, but I need be able to specify the DL and install folders)
Will the Alpha or Beta remove the old Galaxy "leftovers" from the previous builds? Like the first one with AvP 2000?

For the moment galaxy is all about updating games, and installing them. Also adding games in your library that you already have installed. Nothing more, nothing less.
I like this galaxy its very simple and nice. Nothing so complicated :)

I hope they add friendlist possibility
Just installed GOG Galaxy. First impression is positive, the program seems to be lightweight and easy to use. With that said, here's the list of suggestions I have(most to least important):

* Don't make Galaxy client a requirement for accessing our GOG games libraries or playing the games we bought on GOG. There should be always an option to log into your library form a browser, download an installer(or just grab the one you downloaded), install it and play, all without any interactions with Galaxy client. Players should use Galaxy because of it's convenience, not because they are forced to do that.
* Separate autoupdate settings for each game. I think it's a must-have. Some games, like multiplayer-focused titles, pretty much require you to keep them up to date. Single player games in the other hand work perfectly without being updated. So let player decide which games he wants to be updated automatically and to which he will download updates manually when/if he will want to.
* Manual sorting option for library just as on the GOG web site, which ideally should share the sorting order with the web library.
* Same visual style for library as on GOG web site. Current Galaxy library style is horrible.
* Scalable library and shop pages. I used to scale most of the web pages up a bit, including GOG to fully fit the screen horizontally. So compared to how my GOG web page looks, everything in the GOG galaxy window is tiny and hard to read. A Ctrl-mousewheel scale up/scale down option, just like in a browser would be nice to have
* Ability to easily hide the sidebar. There's no need for it to be there, either remove it, make it a separate pop-up window or at the very least add a way to manually open and close it.
* An option to turn instant search off. Instant search is very annoying so give us an option to turn it off in the options screen and only perform search on the press of the enter key/search button.
* Editable path textbox for GOG folders settings. It's a bit annoying to always go into folder selection tree(and start form the very top too) when you only need to add or remove a single folder in a path

Posting this from Galaxy, YAY! :)
I haven't messed with it too much so far, but I've not run into any issues just yet.

The one thing I do want here, and I have been wanting it on the account page for ages, is a "I have finished this game" thing to check off, and then the ability to sort by that.
Can you pause downloads in Galaxy? If you can I have not found the option.

Yes! Plus add this to regular Game Shelf on the website!
Thanks for inviting me to the alpha, GOG. ^.^ Like most of people here - no issues so far, only two things:
1) The detections of instaled games pre-Galaxy is not working 100% - didn't automaticly found all of instaled games, and also it did found unistalled game <Mark of the Ninja>... but with the latter problems was, probably, the game istelf - it didn't unistaled correctly, leaving files in the folder and thus - being detected. "Instaling" from Galaxy Library and the unistalling fix it.
2) The client also didn't found Zeus and Poseidon, and after adding in via instal_from_library it restored the default settings for the game <resolution, enabled autosave and two options in help>. It did not erased saved games, just my settings.

EDIT:
Well... three things now, but it's a feature, really:
3) I can not change my avatar via GOG Galaxy - it sends me to my library, but there is no option there for it (in Galaxy version, I mean, I can do it on website).

Hmm

- the games in my library won't scroll unless I click on the bar that lets you slide through your games first. Only then scrolling works.
- an older installed version of the witcher adventure game on another HDD is added to the galaxy client despite I already have it in there. This is creating a duplicate entry.

So as I was checking the GoG Galaxy client, there's one thing I can't take! -_- the borders and windows interface, they are not aesthetically pleasing!

The windows buttons should be integrated seamlessly in the interface, like in the battle.net launcher one of the most aesthetically pleasing launchers out there. Now I know we're in Alpha testing but was just putting it out there.

For the rest I like the client it does, what it needs, can't wait for the rest of the features.

Let me add another vote for such a feature.

Some other flags would also be useful. For example: "Must find time to play it as soon as possible", "Only in my library because of a bundle", "Hated it, never want to see it again on my list". Or simply user-defined flags/folders.

I agree, this would be nice. Sort by tags, and allow for longer personal comments on each game page.
