Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

A stub installer would work too that has a listing of the files to look for before downloading the entire mess. Add to that a choice of "Do you already have this installed" and then ask where so it can check the file lists and then update if need be or just add to Galaxy immediately.

I have ONLY a 3mb line at the very best of conditions. I would hate to have to redownload everything when I already have all of the original instal files. I grab them by the downloader and store them so that I don't have to download 3 or 4 or even 5 or 7 gigs of stuff all over again.

BTW, a 3mb line means that I download at about 200k to 300k (0.3mb/s), if I am lucky. A 1 gig file will usually take an hour to an hour and a half or more.

Is there a way to?

1) Tell Galaxy not to automatically attempt to update my installed GOG games (not installed via Galaxy) as soon as I open Galaxy?
I have games I care about and would rather not have them corrupted by mistake.

2) Tell Galaxy to really close when I close it, not minimise to the tray?
When I close a program, I expect it to close, not continue consuming my PC's resources.

a) What about turning off auto-updating with more -> game settings?

b) I wouldn't mind if there was an annoying msgbox asking "Exit Galaxy or send to tray" with "do not ask again" checkbox. I'm pretty sure this will come with one of the upcoming updates.

No. That just disables it for that specific game. I want to disable it for all games.

phaolo: Uh? No, you misunderstood me. I was just talking about Galaxy.
We won't be able to manage (= update, install) standalones through it.
So, for me it's useless, because it won't grant automatic backups.

EDIT: maybe not 100% useless, if it will still allow some multiplayer, but way less good.
That isn't true. You will be able to download standalone installers through Galaxy. Just that this function is not yet available in the alpha, but it shall be done by the final version.

Venom: Hi everyone,

we've release a new version of Galaxy Client. In the 0.6 release you can find:
- support for games installed outside of Galaxy Client (click the "+" to scan for installed games)
- Windows: app minimises to system tray when window is closed
- auto start with OS start option was added new Client installers
- UI changes (access to Store and Library moved to top navigation, game Settings and Downloads are now part of game's MORE button)
- numerous small bug fixes and improvements

Update is available for now only via our auto update system. Just restart the Galaxy Client to get the new version.
The client does not recognize The Witcher, Thief GOLD, System Shock 2, Paraoh Gold, Rollercoaster Tycoon
All those games are presented in Galaxy Client's Library, but when I scan games folder, I get nothing but AvP Classic (which status said Offline, and game wasn't able to update, until I restarted Galaxy).

Have you got the Galaxy compatible installer for those games earlier or are they just sitting on your hard drive for quite some time? As mentioned, pre-galaxy-compatible installs won't get recognized by the client. This issue should go away once every single game on GOG will be Galaxy-compatible.

For now you can only disable auto updating on per-game basis, but later on we will add a global setting to disable auto-updates altogether.

I hope we eventually will get a Steam like overlay feature were we can jump in and out of MP games with friends, check achievements, ect.

If your talking about games that are added via standalone installers but are not actually Galaxy supported yet... ie they show as offline, it doesn't work anyway. Had mine disabled and Galaxy still updated the game to make it Galaxy supported.

actually you may already download offline installer through galaxy, more -> extra downloads, no updates for standalone installers though.

Here GOG said that: "Galaxy is not an app to automatically dump all and every installer / update / goodie to your hard drive and auto-update that backup".
That was an useful feature for me.

They are like 2 months old installs (while AvP Classic being like 4-5 months).
So eventually, I'll have to re-install all the games, even after Galaxy official release?

I guess by the time Galaxy reaches 1.0 final, most if not all installers would be already compatible with it for months. This is something we have to deal with as an alpha/beta tester.

When someone downloads the final Galaxy after release and wants to add ~2 months old games to the library, there will be a higher chance that it would be recognized than for you. Simply because Galaxy compatible installers are being made continously on GOG.

Atedos:
Yesterday I was playing Witcher, which is pretty time-confusing. During the game I had the same demand. There were several occasions I wanted to check the time by pressing Shift+Tab instead of Alt-Tabbing out of the game. So it would be a nice feature especially because some games don't like to be Alt-Tabbed and tend to freeze or crash.

I've noticed, that Galaxy Client creates goggame-galaxyFileList.ini files in games' folders, which I assume are used to repair games.
But in only contains list of files, no checksum, or md5. Will repair function work, if one of the files is corrupted or changed, and still is in its place?
