Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

Hi everyone,

we've released the 0.7 version a couple of minutes ago, here's the changelog:

- Back/Forward navigation in the Store section
- Import Folder - it is now possible to import a game which is not compatible with the client, by clicking the game in the Library section and choosing ‘Import Folder’ from the More dropdown
- Startup page option - it is now possible to decide if the client should start on LIBRARY page, STORE page, or continue previous session
- Search option - you can press enter in the search field to continue searching in the Store
- Option to Show Game Folder added to MORE menu
- New sidebar sorting options (sort by name)
- External links will now be forwarded to the system browser
- Wishlist option added to the LIBRARY menu
- Community option in the STORE menu
- Forum Replies option in the ACCOUNT menu
- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)
- Improved ‘Last Played’ information, which should now show the time of the user stopped playing the game, rather than started playing the game
- Fixed uninstallation issues on Windows
- Fixed an issue which prevented using Paypal, when buying a game
- Fixed an issue which prevented from displaying Terms and Agreements when registering new account
- Fixed some issues when installing and uninstalling DLCs
- Bugfix: client will now not allow dragging elements onto its window
- Fixed memory leaks, causing to crash the application when downloading lots of games
- Fixed a bug which was causing the client to crash on exit
- Fixed an issue, which sometimes caused the client to duplicate the news on game view

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

As mentioned earlier, I do believe that you're confusing Galaxy Client application (which is currently in closed alpha and which we discuss in this topic) and tailor-made game launcher that was included some time ago with Alien vs Predator 2000, The Witcher Adventure Game and Double Dragon Trilogy to allow online play and auto-updating (it was bundled with games, as the launcher doesn't work as a standalone app like the Client will). Similarly we bundle with our installers different redistributable to make sure the game can be launched.

In regard to Galaxy Client being optional:
- Yes, the launcher used some of Galaxy frameworks, but it's not Galaxy Client which will be indeed optional.
- Galaxy Client was never bundled with any game purchased on GOG and is meant to be optional download for games bought on GOG.com.
- As for the launcher, as mentioned before, it can be uninstalled if you find it intrusive, of course at the sacrifice of game multiplayer functionality
- Once the Client is out and proven working, we will remove the launcher from the installers

If you find this explanation unsatisfactory and you are unhappy with your purchase due to launcher's "opt-out" instead of "opt-in" workings, then I'm very sorry and I'd like to ask you to please do contact our support. Depending on when you made the purchase, they could possibly offer you money back for it.

As for this thread, please mind that it's about the Galaxy Client alpha and I'd like to ask all the participants to stay on the topic to keep this thread clean and easy for all alpha participants to follow. For other topics or issues, I kindly ask you to use appropriate topics or create them if needed :). Thank you.

That is good news, since for me the most annoying thing about the launcher is, that it installs itself on my windows drive (or has that been fixed?)

To be honest, I'm not sure how far online profiles are and what will we be able to track on our online profile (played games, played hours(!), etc), but for now a little improvement for the "last played" timer:

Would it be possible to show the time we quit the game instead of the time we started it? For example, if I start playing Witcher and I play 4 hours straight then quit the game, Galaxy shows I played the game "4 hours ago" while I just quit.

I know, I know.. little thing, little thing, but a thing nevertheless.

Not all games wrapped in standalone installers are compatible (detectable) by GOG Galaxy Client alpha. The fact that the game is displayed in the Client as available for install is a requirement for this but not a guarantee. Basically, while majority of recently released installers are fully compatible, some older one might be not, thus resulting in a new download rather than importing existing files.

This will improve over time, although not without a redownload of the said installer.

If you want to be 100% sure the game will sync and auto-update with Galaxy without any risk or trial & error, I'd strongly suggest using the "INSTALL" option in Galaxy.

Hi,

I have downloaded and installed Galaxy Client many months ago with the Aliens vs Predator multiplayer test. You might have to uninstall the launcher included with AvP (the one that starts and shows "PLAY" and "MORE" buttons) before installing the Client - but this is just my guess, as I'm writing from home and not from the office. If you don't want to tinker and risk breaking the game installation, then I'd suggest posting your log from the Client to mantis.gog.com with steps to reproduce your bug (maybe it's already there).

Thanks for your reply and sorry for being opaque but I don't think I know what you mean by "launcher". I don't have AvP installed anymore, I uninstalled it after trying out the multiplayer test. Is this launcher a separate application/entry in the installed program list in Windows that I also need to uninstall?

So the only way to get the same version of the same game into Galaxy, is to download 15gb again? Surely there is going to be a better way of doing this? I mean... fifteen gb, gog. that's a pretty significant "galaxy compatibility patch". For your own game. In your own Client.

There were a few games that had a different folder when installed by the stand alone client and when installed through Galaxy. It is possible that The Witcher is one of them, though I'm not really sure. I think there is such a list on mantis, let me see if I recall correctly.

Edit: Issue 1377 mentions that The Witcher 1 is such a game, but doesn't mention the folder names. Off to see if it's in another issue.

It is, the folder has to be named "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" without quotes. The best way to do this is by doing the following:

1. Copy the game folder to someplace else.
2. Uninstall the game.*
3. Add the folder back into wherever you install your GOG games.
4. Rename the folder.
5. Start Galaxy and click install inside of the Galaxy library.

*Important if you don't want duplicate start menu items and probably wrong registry info.

I have a similar problem to rmihaif's, already posted in the mantis, that Galaxy won't launch. I now wonder if it may be caused by the same game, so I too am interested in knowing how to completely remove any trace of AvP, its launcher and whatnot.

Wouldn't it also work if you renamed the folder, then ran the shortcuts once to identify the new place (or manually fix them)?
