Try the DRM-free online gaming platform.

GOG Galaxy: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The GOG Galaxy client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the GOG Galaxy Beta, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the GOG Galaxy Beta and find out more on gog.com/galaxy, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!

trusteft: No thanks.
I hate clients.
Don't fuck this up for us who don't want to use clients GOG.

Trilarion: As long as the client only downloads the installer and then runs them there should not be much space left for fucking up ... but one never knows.

Updating could be a potential source of fucking up since they need to support two ways: updating through removal and installation and updates on the fly. It might be they cannot keep the two ways in sync - they might forget to update the installers.
Ever since they announced Galaxy, the way to download files without a client has slowly being fucked up. Glitches all the time, removal of features (NEW icon next to updated FILES), and of course the infamous unbundling. They are trying to make the experience more and more difficult and by the time Galaxy is complete, I am pretty sure it will be much worse than even now to not use the client. If they even allow that by that time.
So, what games currently have achievements?
I'd like to test that feature.

tinyE: anyone? XD
I don't think there is a person with that name around. I did hear about Someone and Noone though.

On a more serious note, you will have to wait for a while. Others signed up for the closed alpha sometime ago, which is why they already have the client installed.

It would be nice to create own achievements for games and be able to offer them to other players, too.

How about "no"?

The Witcher Adventure Game, for one.

What does "soon" mean? Later today? Tomorrow? Next week?
Anybody who signed up for the beta already got an email?

Gearmos: Simple as this: The more options, the better.

Like you said, there are may people that don't like clients and only needs a simple program for a batch downloading of their DMR-Free installers. And they don't need to create a new standalone downloader from scratch, they already have one and I'm sure it's easy to keep updated if it's already embedded in Galaxy client.
That's what applies for me too.
I'm going to use the Galaxy client just as a downloader and I'm waiting to try the beta as that, since GOG has announced that they are going to drop the downloader as we know it today.

I'm for the maintenance of the GOG downloader.
I can't wait to finally test this.
Do you need to install steam to use crossplay & vice versa.

armedready: Do you need to install steam to use crossplay & vice versa.
Nope.com

I'm just going to copy and paste this explanation I gave someone on Eurogamer:
it's all about the API, not where you bought it from.

Steam is a platform in its own right. Matchmaking, achievements, social features are all coded using the Steam API. You might buy a Steam key from GMG or CDKeys or whatever, but your online credentials are stored ultimately with Steam, and it's these credentials (Steam ID, VAC status etc.) that games acquire when you play a Steam game. Ergo, you're bound to Steam whichever way you do it. This essentially makes Steam a walled garden.

Galaxy is an entirely separate API. You log in to your GOG account for it, and multiplayer games fetch your online credentials from the GOG servers.

For cross-play, when a game wants to matchmake a round, it queries the Steam servers, sees who wants to play, queries the GOG servers, sees who wants to play, then mixes the two together. A game might even display who's playing on Galaxy and who's playing on Steam for shits and giggles.

With GTA V, you log in to your Social Club account, and all the online credentials come directly from Rockstar's own servers. They never even bother querying your Steam ID, except for cheevos (which I believe every Rockstar PC game since LA Noire has done).

No:
12. How can I start using cross-play?

Cross-play doesn't require any setup or configuration. Steam users won't need to create GOG.com accounts or install GOG Galaxy, while GOG.com users won't need to create Steam accounts. Just log in, launch your game, and start playing online!
Great, Galaxy is getting better and better, congrats on finally reaching beta status. I really love the Import feature, it's way better than "quickly, copy the right files into right dir at the right time" workaround Steam has.

One quick question though - judging from the quick look at Galaxy logs it seems after hashing the client downloads entire installer again and reinstalls the game from scratch - which kinda misses the point of having games downloaded and installed beforehand. Is it really how this works, or did I miss something?

Hmmm. I can't install until I get home but I thought I'd sign up in case the beta is limited. The link from the article is not mobile friendly, so I can't even rescale the page to read it.
