<span class="bold">GOG Galaxy</span>: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The <span class="bold">GOG Galaxy</span> client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the <span class="bold">GOG Galaxy Beta</span>, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the <span class="bold">GOG Galaxy Beta</span> and find out more on <span class="bold">gog.com/galaxy</span>, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!

Fallen_Zen: We have no plans to remove the GOG Downloader but we can't promise on updates either.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Tekkaman-James ;)

Gearmos: Please, do keep supporting GOG Downloader as an option. It would be good for your useres and, by extension, good for you.
Why? not being snarky., I am honestly curious as to the reasoning since you can download the installers through Galaxy and just about every thing in it is optional and so if you choose so it's basically a fancy downloader so outside of the stigma of the term Client I fail to personally see what the reason for having the downloader and a other application that does the same thing.

I second that request!
While everyone's waiting, here's the list of known bugs: http://mantis.gog.com/view_all_bug_page.php

It's worth a browse, to avoid nasty surprises. (For example, read http://mantis.gog.com/view.php?id=1159 if you plan to use Arcanum with the client.)

mrkgnao: Using the downloader is only "partial luddite". Some of us don't use even that.

Erich_Zann: That was my point. I don't use the downloader, nor am I planning to use Galaxy except maybe for the odd deathmatch.
You're right. I misread.

The downloader may be simpler to use or the GOG client may have other restrictions we know currently nothing about or it may have them introduced in the future. It may be more heavy-weight in its ressource usage.

I don't think this is all critical but having the downloader as a tool is basically the essential part of what most people need from Galaxy. Having to have a full blown client just to be able to comfortably download your games seems like ... overkill.

(One should note that there are also alternative downloaders, so as long as GOG documents their interfaces, everything is fine.)
Cool! Just joined the beta. Enjoying the alpha so far.
Is or will the Galaxy chat be encrypted?

Geralt_of_Rivia: Is there any way to force client updating? I have tried starting and restarting the client several times and it didn't update. There also isn't a new installer in the library as of now.
No updates available yet. This time also suffer with impatience ; )

For example, Galaxy does not currently support downloading all bonuses with one click (at least in alpha).

No problem. I just enjoy using the word "luddite" first chance I get.

On topic, I just remembered that Outlaws recently came to GOG. Hence, dumb question from multiplayer illiterate me : a mate and I still have our retail versions, but LAN is not an option and I'm too lazy to figure out how to direct connect (if it's even supported) ; will we be able to play through Galaxy (and blast ya all to bits) ?

XD Okay how do I use this thing? I clicked on the join and it told me I was getting an email but so far nothing, I would imagine traffic is backed up but then I noticed no one else seems to be having this problem. :P

trusteft: No thanks.
I hate clients.
Don't fuck this up for us who don't want to use clients GOG.
As long as the client only downloads the installer and then runs them there should not be much space left for fucking up ... but one never knows.

Updating could be a potential source of fucking up since they need to support two ways: updating through removal and installation and updates on the fly. It might be they cannot keep the two ways in sync - they might forget to update the installers.
As long as Galaxy does not allow me to download Windows games on my Mac the downloader is a must. I play all my Windows games in Wine, and while I don't expect GOG to support that I think it's reasonable to expect them not hinder it either.

Problem I see is GOG's (arguably) small team/limited resources may only have time for Galaxy. Maybe there's a way they could open-source the downloader so fans/users can keep it up-to-date? I don't know how that works, but it's an idea.
Great! Waiting for my Alpha to update. :)

I believe it does allow. At least the opposite is allowed.
