styggron: Hello everyone.
I was just reading in the FAQ they are not going to be suppoting the download manager anymore. This worried me a little. The website will still of course allow manual downloads.

My concern is,

1. if I want to ONLY use the GOG website will I have to use my own download manager now because GOG is no longer going to be supporting theirs in the near future ?

2. Can GOG galaxy for example (if logged in and running) automatically use it's download manager to just download the installers to my hard drive WHEN I visit my library on the website and click on a title to download ?

From what I read, I am thinking (guessing) the answers are
1. If I want to use the website by going to a title in my library and clicking to download I will now need my own download manager as GOG is no longer going to be updating theirs after Galaxy is fully in (but not at Galaxy launch as they have said).

2. No. You either use the website OR GOG Galaxy. You can't use the website to click on a title and then have Galaxy download manage it.

I could be wrong with what I think my answers are so I shall now hand it over to you to hear what the answer to question 1 and 2 are.

It is indeed a big problem if it downloads and silently RUNS the installer. You said there was no way of stopping that, this is a problem if this is the case.

It is indeed a big problem if it downloads and silently RUNS the installer. You said there was no way of stopping that, this is a problem if this is the case.
See Judas' responses to me above, there are alternative methods (though cumbersome, IMO) that bypass this.

JudasIscariot: OK, you see where the blue install button is? If you click on the gray button next to it and go to extras, you'll see your bonuses and a link to the offline installer :)

cogadh: I don't have an "Extras", but I do have a "Download Extras". All that does is take me to an option to download the installer, so even though I have already downloaded and installed the game through Galaxy, if I want the offline installer to take to another of my PCs, I have to download the game a second time?
Yes that's the safest route to ensure you have the offline installer. Sorry, I am at home on my Linux machine so I can't verify specific details regarding the offline installers and see how a Galaxy install differs file-wise and I am not that well-versed in Galaxy overall just yet as I am waiting for the Linux version like all the other penguins :D

I can't speak for that, but GOG Galaxy developers have stated in the forums on more than one occasion that Galaxy installs a pre-installed version of the game that it syncs over, and that the standalone installers are separate. It is possible that it depends on the exact game or other factors perhaps. Either way, the information is in the forum threads if someone cares to search for it to get their exact words.

Thanks for highlighting this and FYI we will have to update this answer tomorrow since it's not accurate enough. While this is true for games, I can already assure you that there will be situations where update will appear faster on Galaxy - it's precisely a point of why we are creating it, to make sure we can deliver new updates automatically as fast as possible, without waiting for manual build and test of a new installer or patch to complete. The other option would be to artificially delay update in the Client because we don't have the new installer ready, which would be just bluntly stupid.

Ok so to directly answer my questions they would be

1. If I want to use the website alone, YES I need to use my own download manager once the old download manager is no longer usable.

2. I can use the website, go to my library, click on a title and get Galaxy to download it (like it worked with the old download manager). After Galaxy is in you either download manually from the website (with your own download manager) OR you use Galaxy

In Summary from the responses here.
1. From Website you can click on titles but you need to have your own download manager especially for BIG files.
2. You can use GOG Galaxy to do the same thing BUT one user here said it will run the installer silently when you download so I would need some clarification on that.

[EDIT: This has been solved, you can download the offline installer with Galaxy, as anticipated GOG is smart VERY smart and thinks of everything]

Knowing the way GOG works and how good they are, I am sure there is a way for GOG Galaxy to JUST download.

As they kindly responded,

I think we are safe and this is why.

1. The download manager still needed you to login to your account of course. You can run it and when done exit it. From what I read and from the quotation above, Galaxy can do the same thing except it has it's own interface so you can do it without a browser.

So really, all you get is a stand alone souped up download manager and if it works in the same way and with all those optional things, GOG as always has a winner and never forces anyone into anything and THIS is why they are the best.

For me, I would only be using it to MANAGE downloads when I choose to download them and nothing else, it is all about "Freedom of choice" , GOG's Primary Ethos and THIS is why they are ALL so awesome !!!! I love you GOG team.......!! :) :)

A quick question. I installed GoG Galaxy for the first time, and ran the Scan and Import folders. I have currently 5 games installed (Witcher, Pillars of Eternity, Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun Dragonfall and Neverwinter Nights). And only 2 of them were found (Pillars and Dragonfall). Is this normal because the other games are not yet fully implemented into beta or is there some other issue at hand?

Now, why doesn't Galaxy also allow to update&store them without installation?

It also depends on how long ago you installed the games. Some older versions are not automatically recognized by the client, you need to add them manually. And there are a few games that are not supported yet, so perhaps you also got unlucky, but I don't know which games that are.

I think this is extremely important. I despise things like steam forcing updates and the like. With GOG it is all about choice and this is why I love them. They go out of their way to give you a tailored experience with the features YOU want and if you don't want them you can turn them off.

I wish more companies were like GOG !!! They are just so cool and SO helpful ! :)

Why such concern over the support for the legacy Gog downloader app? The installers are available for download directly from the website via browser. For users who don't want to use Gog's solution (galaxy), why not just download from the browser?

I changed operating system a while ago, so all of them are the newest version, the oldest install is January 3rd. So I think that, and Shadowrun Returns I reinstalled two weeks ago. So probably, these three other games are not supported yet. And thanks for answering my question :)

I get an email about Galaxy Beta and I click the button to Get it now. I'm then taken to a site where it tells me to submit my email address and that I'll get it soon. What's the deal here. Can i get it now or can't I?
