== BUG REPORTING ==

Please use: http://mantis.gog.com and include
1. steps to reproduce the bug (if possible)
2. screenshot or movie showing the bug (if possible)
3. Galaxy Client logs (see below)

Where can I find Galaxy logs on my computer?
On Windows 7 or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Mac OS X: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

== FEATURE SUGGESTIONS ==

Please use: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy. For feature suggestions and votes on them please try do explain how Galaxy and its users will really benefit from it.

== IMPORT ALREADY INSTALLED GAMES TO GALAXY ==

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the Galaxy logo button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library (click on the image of the game), then click the More button and select "Manage Installation" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

== KNOWN ISSUES ==
- throttling max download speed is not yet possible
- notifications related to incoming chat messages and friend requests does not always disappear instantly when consumed and may require reloading Store page
- games imported from existing installations will auto-update once, even if updating is disabled
- Moving Galaxy from /Applications on Mac OS X will stop the app from working
- Galaxy cannot be launched by other users on the same computer

For everyone who has a problem with missing api-ms-crt dlls in Client's versions post 1.1.5:
Please install one of those windows update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118401
You may need to update Windows to meet the requirements for these:
For Windows 8.1 and for Windows Server 2012: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919355
For Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976932

You can also try reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables 2015 (x86) if you meet above requirements.
Available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

If above instructions doesn't work for you, create a separate issue on mantis.gog.com and we'll try to help you individually.

Please note that this solution only helps with the missing api-ms-crt dlls.

========================================================================================

Answering this question: Why 1.1 doesn't work after updating to 1.2?

This is happening probably due to incompatible database from version 1.2, please delete this folder:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GOG.com\Galaxy\storage
usually
C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\storage\

Then you'll have to use scan&import (menu under the top Galaxy logo) function to see your games back in Galaxy Client.

I'm looking for any others who may be testing out the Galaxy overlay feature with The Witcher 3, who doesn't mind if I spam them with some short test messages via chat over time in order to test the chat feature. I sent a couple messages to other folks I figured might be testing it out as well, but though perhaps it would be better to ask for volunteers here first instead. :) Likewise, if anyone is testing the overlay in The Witcher 3 also, please feel free to send me chat test messages if you need to guinea pig test the overlay chat UI. Just say something like "Witcher 3 overlay test chat" and whatever else so I know it is a test. :)

Thanks in advance to any volunteers.
So what are Galaxy overlay's features at the moment? And what are the features planned at release? I'm quite hyped about it, but have doubts if it will deliver given many missing basic features in Galaxy itself.

Frankly, I'm afraid the overlay will only feature chat and achievement notifications, but I hope I'm wrong.

1) screenshot feature is a MUST

2) built-in web browser would be very useful, too - Galaxy itself is a specialized web browser, we'd only need the overlay to allow browsing the rest of the Internet (and allow copying text while we're at it!)

3) streaming via Twitch would be really great - something akin to Origin; GOG already has partnership with Twitch, so this wouldn't be much of a problem, I'd think

4) last by not least, compatibility with old titles; Steam overlay does not work for me in old games (like Neverwinter Nights or HoMM3), but given GOG's focus in old titles (even if it has since expanded its library, old games are still a large part of it) I think they should build the overlay with such game compatibility in mind; I hope testing the overlay with The Witcher 3 does not mean they don't care that much whether it will work with old titles, too.

So, anyone knows what the overlay will offer?

Taro94: So what are Galaxy overlay's features at the moment?
There are 3 panes in the overlay currently. The left pane shows your game achievements for the currently played game. The middle pane is your friend list with a search box at the top similar to the website chat screen. The right pane is the chat message conversation area with an input box. In addition to this, the overlay feature is used to provide popup messages of achievements while in game, and presumably for other types of in-game notifications as well. To the best of my knowledge and my current usage of testing the overlay, this is all that is implemented currently.

I do not believe GOG has announced that level of detail publicly yet so we wont know unless someoen from GOG provides an answer here or sometime in the future. Having said that, I think it is quite likely that they will provide an FPS counter and a screenshot feature as those should be easy to implement and are popular features present in other client's overlays. We'll have to wait and see what they have to say though.

avatar
Taro94: 1) screenshot feature is a MUST
Indeed, and I'm sure that's on their list although I don't believe they've specifically mentioned it. It just seems like an obvious must-have feature that I think it's safe to assume it will be present in the future at least for DirectX and OpenGL based games where it is possible to implement something like that. It is probably not possible with old DOSbox type games or early Windows 95/98 games though (otherwise other clients would probably have screenshot abilities in those games too).

avatar
Taro94: 4) last by not least, compatibility with old titles; Steam overlay does not work for me in old games (like Neverwinter Nights or HoMM3), but given GOG's focus in old titles (even if it has since expanded its library, old games are still a large part of it) I think they should build the overlay with such game compatibility in mind; I hope testing the overlay with The Witcher 3 does not mean they don't care that much whether it will work with old titles, too.
That would indeed be a nice feature to have, but I am not certain that it is technically possible to do this without Microsoft providing a way to have other programs able to intercept graphics and pop up on top of them. I believe this is only doable with DirectX and OpenGL games as mentioned above. If there is a way to do it with other games however then it would be fantastic if GOG would figure out how to do that and add support for sure. I often want to screenshot a game or get an FPS counter or some other thing in-game using Steam and with old titles it is just not possible there. It's very dependent on what API the games use for graphics however so it might not be possible or might not be very easy to do in a generic way that works with large numbers of games. If it would require adding specialized support on a one game at a time basis then it is probably unlikely to see such a feature show up though.

avatar
Taro94: So, anyone knows what the overlay will offer?
Unless I've missed something I don't believe GOG has announced any particular features other than what we just discussed, but they will probably announce more as they have something to show for. It's probably better for them to not pre-announce features until they actually have some code up and running for a given feature anyway lest people get their hopes up to soon. One can always check the Galaxy wishlist and see if any particular features listed there are marked by GOG as "in-progress", but other than that we'll have to wait for them to either announce something or until they put out a big client update with new features.

Hope this helps.
Didn't read through the 179 pages to see if this was already posted, but the interface needs tweaking. I love the minimalist approach, but I had to hunt for things (the setting menu, for example). Yes, a gear makes sense, and I understood when I saw it, but the clickable items are all in different places.

On a different note, Chaos Overlords has the taskbar displayed at all times. It's easy enough to fix in the normal installed version by right-clicking on the shortcut and checking a box, but the "configure" option in GOG-Galaxy only has windowed/fullscreen or whether you want updates automatically installed. It would be nice if the Galaxy version was equal to the normal installer, rather than inferior. I haven't tried other games in depth, so not sure about any other issues.

Are there? That's surprise to me. When this happened and how do I make this new overlay show up? Last time I checked there was only very simple overlay showing achievements as they were obtained, and only in Witcher 3.

Shows up in the default client with the default game for me since I first tried it a few weeks ago.

Update: Oh, I forgot to mention, I also have had the "Receive preview updates to test upcoming features" button enabled for a while now too so it could be due to that. If someone isn't seeing it, they might want to check that box. I haven't noticed any additional instabilities since I've had that enabled anyway for the last 3-4 months or so I estimate.

As I have "Receive preview updates to test upcoming features" set to on for uncountable eons (long enough for me to forget it ever existed, probably as soon as it was introduced), and given shortcut works just like TAB alone, this probably means I'm not one of the chosen. Pity that, although I like that new features are tested, as this makes their release imminent. No instabilities for me either as a side note. But I generally never spotted serious problem since closed alpha.

Eh as far as I know it wasn't... just the display achievements part of the overlay. But I might be wrong then.
Just downloaded this, to test it again.

If I click outside of the login Dialog box, the login dialog disappears.

Just thought I'd let you know

All the best

Testing downloading a game [deponia] Galaxy still has the problem with slow download speed.

Cavenagh: {edit] why 4 Galaxyclient helper.exe [yes I know I have four cores . I'll see if I can set galaxy to 1 core]
Single threaded programs show up as a single entry, multi-threaded programs show up as a separate entry per thread, and multi-process programs are actually multiple individual processes running independently so they will also show up as multiple entries. In order to manipulate/administer individual threads of a multi-threaded program or multiple processes within a process group they need to show up visibly in the operating system or they can not be controlled. For example if a process hangs with "Not responding" you need to be able to right click on it and "End Process". If only one of N subprocesses of a multi-process application show up in the list, then you can't kill them or otherwise control them or even know they exist running in the computer.

This is more or less how operating systems work with multi-threaded/multi-process software basically. It is not specifically related to the number of cores you have in your computer (multithreaded/multiprocess programs can just as easily have many threads/processes on a single-core computer), however for programs that are multi-core aware it may affect the number of threads or processes that the program does spawn in order to utilize and optimize itself for the given system and perhaps take better advantage of multiple cores.

It is possible to restrict a program to a single core by setting the CPU affinity either at launch using the Windows "START" command or by right clicking on individual processes in the task list and choosing "Set CPU affinity" however the latter method only works for the current run of the program and does not restrict it in the future when it is started. Using the START command requires modifying the application's shortcut and its a little technical in nature (I'll leave that to Google to describe).

Note that restricting multi-threaded or multi-process programs to a single core in a system will not necessarily have any effect on how many threads or processes the program spawns when it is in use, it only forces them all to go to one or more specified cores. Normally during proper operation of the system, the operating system will move threads/processes around from one core to another in order to ensure that all processes and threads have an optimal amount of CPU resources available. Forcing processes/threads to a single core not only does not make them vanish from the task list, but it may actually harm performance by causing them to all compete for resources on the restricted number of cores that have been configured.

In general, one should not muck around with CPU affinity settings on processes unless one knows for sure what they're doing is beneficial and has no harmful side effects to performance or the system as a whole. When it comes to gaming normally you want to leave this alone completely, however certain older games that predate multi-core systems may have been coded in such a bad way that when ran on a multi-core system they experience instability or run extremely slow due to cache thrashing (a side effect of incredibly bad multithreaded programming). Using the CPU affinity feature on such poorly coded software (not just games, any badly written multi-threaded app) can force all the threads to a single core and avoid cache thrashing while having no real negative effect on performance as the apps are generally written for really ancient computers anyway.

In short though, "don't muck with things that aren't broken" is the rule here, and that's what I advise. :)
Seems like development is dead, we haven't got a single major update for Galaxy in +6 months.

Development is not dead. 1.1.6 is coming soon. Back end is being re-done and it is taking a while. Furthermore, updates have released every few weeks or so, just not a major one.
avatar
Kobi_Blade: Seems like development is dead, we haven't got a single major update for Galaxy in +6 months.
As BKGaming mentioned, they're working hard on the next release. A lot of the work being done is actually on the back end server side of things as they've mentioned previously. That kind of coding is something that is absolutely necessary for the functioning of the service, but which is largely not something user-visible because it doesn't do anything visible on one's desktop, but it still takes time to code.

A few weeks ago they mentioned here that they are working on 1.1.6 and it should be out soon, you can go back through the last few pages of the thread to find their post for details if you like (don't have a link handy sorry).

It's also worth noting that GOG's careers page continuously has jobs available for developers with relocation to Warsaw for development of Galaxy and the website so that should indicate their commitment to the software right there.

Setting affinty to one didn't work, but the game [deponia] is running well, and tbh the galaxyclient helper's are not taking up too much memory.

Thanks for the reply +1
