Socratatus: This is how it always goes, little by little, creep by creep, push by push until they brainwash people into it JUST like they did with Steam all those years ago.
Except Steam was never completely optional, as far as I know it was compulsory for playing all games by Valve even in its initial stages. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

I don't agree and I hate most of the changes they made and I really don't want to defend them, but for many customers it might really look like GOG only improved over the years.
Progress- in the sense of some kind of change, not necessarily positive or negative- appear to many as improvement.

Break what already worked on the site.. don't impement new features in the site.. do everything with Galaxy even if it in no way requires an online client.
GOG Galaxy. The optional client..

Just as a reminder.. steam started as a comfortable client for keeping mods up to date...

Galaxy notifications are messed up, and the client is often slow and buggy.
No tabbed browsing yet. Even they have no right-click context menu.

For anyone interested notifications seem to work in GOGDownloader for me.

Gog Connect is also nice for games already purchased on Steam.
[...]
That appears to be a double edged sword to me.

I like the convenience of the client for managing the downloads now that it works. [...]
That's fine. I personally use the client, but sure it's nothing near likeable yet.
People are mostly anxious not about the existence of the client, but GOG's attitude in promoting it in ways that are ...what should we say... not very GOG-like.
I feel sad and depressed for future PC gamers born around now that may never know of or experience client free or even DRM free gaming. 1st world problems I know but this is the state of the world, less and less freedom is what we are heading into in many areas of life.

And Galaxy can not show SERIAL KEYS.
Users have to use a regular web browser to get it.
GOG is damn stupid to make the super buggy client.

They should have kept it in beta. It is still a very much work in progress.

I don't think it's a first world problem anymore. The same ideas and concepts are being implemented in every corner of our digital lives.

Yeah, notifications do work in the Downloader, I think it's sweet and have practically 0 problems with it. I'd love to know what problems people were having with it that GOG needed to ahem, "upgrade" it to a fucking client.

I wish to have the Downloader work on Windows 10 properly. Unfortunately it doesn't, which is a darn shame because the Downloader downloads *far better* than Galaxy can.

Literally. Just quitting Galaxy might undo some of your download progress if you're in the middle of one, it takes ages just to pause the download, and sometimes the download doesn't even use all of my download speed (which is a meager 100kb/s to begin with). Fortunately, I have Free Download Manager to save me here.

That must be one of the reasons why people don't use it, that it doesn't work on newer op systems. Win 7 user here, not looking forward to the day I have to abandon Win 7 and perhaps therefore the Downloader too.

I'm on Win 10, and GOGDownloader works perfectly, not a problem here.

This. I started using GOGDownloader irritated by Galaxy's inconsistent download mechanism.

How so ?

Works like a charm, here.

Breja: Nicely spotted. I'd say it's another mark to add to GOG's list of shady acts, but then again the practice is probably so common arguing against it would be screaming at a brick wall.
Also you would be five or six years too late; Gaming news outlet having referal codes for major digital distributors (i.e. Steam, Gog, Humble Bundle, etc... )is nothing new.

Huh. I swear it crashed every time I launched it on Windows 10. I'll give it another try today then.

EDIT: Yep, it's none the better. It's still as crashy as ever. I wonder what kinds of sorcery have you guys employed to get it running, or if I'm missing some major dependency or what...it really is mysterious.

Did you try running it in Windows 7 compatibility mode ?
