Quoted for truth – and it bears repeating that there isn't anything in it for developers, that GOG doesn't make a dime out of it, that GOG's most loyal and hardcore customers have nothing to gain at all and that even customers who have already accepted Steam on their computers don't have that much of an advantage in getting their hands on a DRM free installer.

What's happening now and what I've witnessed on other forums already is exactly what I expected: developers are getting annoyed with GOG because their Steam customers keep nagging them about GOG Connect.

If GOG Connect returns, it will be announced officially by GOG, so wait & see...

Yeah, no doubt with gobs of entitlement mentality in their communications with developers also. Hopefully a few bad apples don't spoil it for the whole bunch though. I would bet money for every self-entitled complainer out there, there are 100 or more people who are just happy to get an unexpected unobligated free offer whether they own the games in question or not, and whether they were able to redeem and take advantage of the offer or not. I know I am. The only games that were offered so far on GOG Connect which I own - I either owned on GOG already, or I owned on both GOG and Steam already. Am I upset because I got nothing out of it so far? Nope, I'm thrilled that it exists and that many thousands of other gamers got to take advantage of the previous special offers. I look forward to any future offers that might show up whether or not I can personally benefit from them, and whether or not I miss out due to technical problems I experience along the way or just not taking notice within the limited timeframe the offers are available. I wont nag developers about it either though, they're busy writing games or whatever which is better use of their time really.

As always though when it comes to free stuff being offered... "Give them an inch and they want a mile." reigns supreme.

That is still not limited in the same sense as System Shock 2. The program itself is not limited at least not according to that FAQ.

I see no reason why people are talking about free games, when it's not free, you need to own the games to start with.

If you guys think it's fair to pay for the same game twice, go ahead it's your money, and that way of thinking and type of behaviour that makes companies greedy.

As for the limited time I suggest you guys do re-read the FAQ, it's not up to GoG nor the Developers, it's up to the both of them and an agreement they must get to.

CD Projekt seems to have abandoned the project though, there's no way to get to GoG Connect either on the Website or GoG Galaxy (unless you have the direct link).

And if CD Projekt wanted to support it further, they would be talking with developers about getting into an agreement, their silence and lack of support regarding GoG Connect points to the obvious.

But then again CD Projekt is silent and slow, so just wait for it.

Think of it as being able to get a Blu-Ray copy of a movie by showing them the receipt for your DVD copy of it. Yes, you need to have bought the movie before, but you do get a free copy of it. For some people, the Blu-Ray copy may be superior, for others the DVD copy may be the superior one. But it is still a free copy, even if you had to have bought the game before.

Is the Witcher Backup project also abandoned then? There also doesn't appear to be a link to the page anywhere on the site.

Who said they are not talking with developers? They may not be talking with all the developers (publishers, to be exact), but those they are talking with are most likely under an NDA, thus they cannot say "Hey guys, buy our game wherever it's cheap right now, you'll be able to get a GOG copy for it in September".

My biggest wishlist feature at this point, is a way to block stupid forum threads so they no longer waste space on my screen.

What they do indicate is that on a per game/publisher basis individual games are available via GOG connect for a limited time and they encourage you to check back for more which was what I said. You can read that on the page I linked.

The thing is as I also noted to begin with that there been no more games made available but they still have the page up telling you to basically keep checking back forever...

So GOG Connect has not gone away as of now at least.

I don't see any relationship to what is on sale at Steam or not regarding whether GOG Connect should be active. It isn't like GOG Connect would be making the entire Steam sale available free on GOG or even any of it necessarily. A lot is on sale but not all of it is great discounts and some titles are not on sale at all, such as Siege of Dragonspear. I do understand your point though in that putting up a bunch of popular titles presently on sale dirt cheap would not make a lot of sense but again that does not mean the program necessarily needs to be in hibernation during the sale and certainly not until the end of the year.

To me it is one of those things where if you are going to do something, do it. If you are going to take breaks with it or whatever, be clear and say so, let users know when it will be available again. That would be fine. Do it periodically then but communicate that clearly rather than leave it for people to wonder or guess or make assumptions about. That is what I would suggest.

It's always a shame when a good program or promotion winds up being mishandled such that it starts off great and then seems to disappear or maybe be discontinued until who knows when or <insert guess about it here>, etc. it is so much better to just communicate. It avoids misunderstanding and sometimes people not being particularly happy with something. Why let that happen to something good, including if it simply needs to end or be put on indefinite hold? That's how I feel about that personally.
No, because the time games were up was considerably shorter than that, as in 48 hours if I recall correctly. So you need to check daily pretty much or at least every other day to avoid missing one you might be eligible for - IF they actually were doing it anymore which they haven't for a while now.

Try reading the original post next time before you go off please. You might want to take your own advice and "actually read and even try to comprehend" before writing a response that clearly indicates that you just did neither of those things yourself before responding here.

I did not say it disappeared. I have it bookmarked. I have been checking it. I linked it in this thread just now to clarify what it does say since that was misstated in one reply.

I don't appreciate your "world is owed to them" remark. I made it abundantly clear in the first post that this was not in any way about that. I was wondering about that status of the program and if I'd missed any announcement about it since it is still running but there is never anything to connect to which after a while kind of defeats the purpose both for GOG and for users. If enough time goes by with no games there, who would bother checking anymore? Thus my comment about communication being a good thing as obviously checking back often is currently a waste of time. That's fine too but it would be nice if they just communicated about times when it needs to be on hold for a while. Personally, I'd have no complaint there.

I don't consider myself entitled to anything aside of what i pay for but if they are going to entice users to check often, they should either have something to offer once in a while or put it on hold and promote it again when they do. They have not done this.

In any event, it is not a big deal and I was simply curious. I didn't see a post about it on the first page so I made one. People that get pissed off about such things can and should just skip them. Nobody makes them read redundant threads and worse compel them to bitch about it in those threads. They do that to themselves.

To quote the news article about GOG connect So for connect to return, participating developers and publishers have to agree for such a promotion. They may agree to do one tomorrow, they may not agree to do one again. Most likely times for such a promotion though are when a new game is released and they want to give the old game as a freebie, or during the seasonal sales. Thus why I predict we'll have one by the end of the year, since November is usually a time for new releases and Winter is the next major sale period.
And no, they cannot tell us in advance when it will be available again, because 1) they don't know yet and 2) That would mean that instead of buying the game here, we'd buy it from where it's cheaper and then get a GOG copy. So telling us in advance what games will be available and when does not make financial sense for GOG.

Any promotion page on this site that GOG keeps active is absolutely their own decision. Any choice they make about communication or lack thereof related to this promotion is entirely their own decision.

I have not disputed anything about the publisher's control over their products. Why state the obvious?

My post was more general to the overall phenomenon of anyone and everyone posting new threads about GOG Connect that more or less say the same thing even if the details, attitude, and conclusions might vary from one person to another rather than a direct response or judgment of you specifically.

Sorry, but it just gets tiring reading the same repeated nonsense about certain topics every day. It's nothing personal against anyone specifically, just a reaction to the annoyance towards specific topics that just repeat over and over again with nothing new to say, the same responses, the same conclusions, the same facts provided - but new people showing up tomorrow that never read any of it and think they're the first to post about the topic.

I have no problem with you personally, but I'm annoyed by all the GOG connect threads (obviously).

I appreciate your attempt to clarify things but I did and do understand that. I read the page I linked. My whole point was about the "stay tuned" part of things. There is not a lot of point in staying tuned when nothing is happening for a long time.

Now I will try to clarify something at this point. My only real complaint here and i want to emphasize that it is not a big one as people seem to be overreacting (not you but some folks) to a simple inquiry, is just that it would have been good for them to communicate about this program they and the publishers have allowed to go dormant for the time being, that's all.

This does not merit anybody getting worked up over it. I am not although I do get a little peeved when people get their panties in a bundle over nothing. I wasn't pissed about anything until then. Fortunately, I am already over it not that the offending parties would care of course,

The way this thread just went down the toilet has reminded me again why I go long stretches without posting anything here. The GOG forums used to be a nice friendly place once upon a time overall. Hopefully they still are more often than not but it has not been my own experience unfortunately. It's no better than Steam really. The crowd seems older but not any more mature and I am probably just as bad for coming out and saying so when it will do no good. Sometimes though, at least it feels good to say it rather than just take shit from people without a word in response.

So, I'm off and people can decide I am an entitled prick wanting free games if they want even though I own them all already. Whatever. For now, I give up again.
