Mnemon: Split game files and installer, please?
I just downloaded both Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive. Under a Killing Moon is one large .exe. Pandora Directive comes as a small setup.exe and two .bin files.
With UAKM Windows XP always tries to scan the whole setup file of 1.4GB anytime I use explorer to enter the folder it is in. That locks up my system for a good while. No such problem with Pandora Directive. XP still scans the .exe, I guess, but because it's just 2MB it doesn't cause any major delay.
I'd like to see small setup.exe's that access .bin files for the actual data, with all games GOG releases. Despite avoiding the above it'd also make it possible to update the installer without having to re-release (and force a complete re-download of) the game data.
The installer is split into several files if it's larger than 2 GB, because that's how Inno Setup handles the choice to make larger installers function on FAT32 drives (that file system can't handle files over 2GB). If the game or its installer is updated you'll still have to redownload the WHOLE installer, not just the exe file.
