Thanks for shedding light on yet another gem that seemingly flew under the radar, Doc!

Curious about this one. A card-builder RPG would be something like Magic The Gathering's Shandalar, perhaps?

Since you mentioned the magic word, why don't you google "shandalar 2016" and see what you find?

Wow, "MTG: Shandalar Modern" ... original game resurrected with cards / deck lists up to 2016! When you think online communities cannot come up with more exciting projects, you discover these gems (how did I not hear more about this). Seeing that great titles received such love is wonderful. Thanks for that insight, greeklover ^^

Coding functionality for new keywords on the previous frame must have been tricky. Wonder if power creep was an issue, with newer cards having a tendency to overpower abilities from previous editions, and if that made newer updates more difficult.

Do note that the "sequel" is not really a sequel. It's a very different game set in the same universe. The first (which I have played and which I recommend) is a deck-building roguelite; the second (which is not really my cup of tea) is an open-world first-person-perspective RPG.

I had my best memories with Shandalar. The original MTG PC game released by Microprose was/is so much better than any other MTG digital versions - it had good singleplayer, it wasn't P2W as it had quite big amount of cards and it allowed to create / test many great decks.

I was following the start of "modern" Shandalar versions around 2010-2012 but it seems that there is some even later version - I need to take a look in my free time. :)

It's so pity that because of different copyrights (and MTG online) we will probably never see this version of the game on sale again in stores like GOG. It's so good that we had/have so clever communities to update this game as it's quite a gem.
