Some harrowing dark humor jokes to join the giveaway,

“Every year, I celebrate my birthday with a cake and candles, but lately, the candles have been more like a fire hazard. Aging is like a horror movie where the villain is just my reflection in the mirror.”

“I used to play memory games to keep my mind sharp, but now I can't remember why I walked into a room. I realize my memories are becoming as elusive as my youth.”

“Choosing a Halloween costume used to be fun, but now I'm stuck between —handsome vampire— and —realistic mummy—. My costume options start resembling my actual skin condition!”

My wishlist:
—The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition
—Creaks Collector's Edition
—Blackwell Epiphany
—DARQ: Complete Edition
—In Sound Mind - Deluxe Edition

Thank you bjgamer and the donor community, especially KillingMoon, Doc0075 and HypersomniacLive for representing them this time! I appreciate the chance.

In the true spirit of Halloween horror, I've decided to unleash my inner gruesome! LOL! Here's my attempt at a spooky short story. And please, do remember folks: this is just a fictional Halloween tale. Or... is it? Muahahaha!! xD

*** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***

"Your granny looks like a witch!" Every morning my classmates would taunt me, having spotted my grandma pick me up in her car after school the previous day. Garret was the worst of them all. His taunts were often accompanied by physical attacks. He'd resort to pitching painful objects in my direction, like a heavy book or a wooden chalkboard brush. The classroom would typically burst into laughter and the teacher would silently nod in disapprouval, but no more. Then, come recess, Garret would rough me up in the school yard, pretending it was all fun and games. This made going to school a living hell for me.

"Hello, sweetie? Are you still there?" my grandma's voice gently brought me back to the kitchen. She smiled when I finally caught sight of her face. "Would you like some tea, dear?"

"Yes, please..." I replied, embarrassed by my absent-mindedness. I remained seated at the kitchen table as I watched grandma turn towards the sink and let the cold water run for a little bit before filling the kettle and putting it on the stove.

"Were you bullied at school again today?" grandma asked me, her eyes softening. She fussed over her apron, unconsciously adjusting it against her hearty figure.

"Not so much," I said, with a hint of surprise in my voice. "Garret did not show up at school today." My eyes casually glanced at the portraits along the kitchen wall. There was a black and white photo of my dad pressing a loving kiss on my mom's cheek, taken several years ago, back when they were young and still alive. There were many more photos of me and grandma on the wall, though. She did raise me, after all.

"Oh," grandma punctuated. I was unsure if she was reacting to my last comment or to the kettle that was now whistling wildly.

"I hate it when the kids at school say that you look like a witch! They say it as if you were hideous and it makes me so mad!" I blurted out, unexpectedly.

"The kettle and the cauldron... You tend to boil and I prefer to simmer," grandma chuckled as she joined me at the kitchen table and poured us some tea. "Do not sweat the small stuff, my dear. Take it from me." Her eyes glimpsed at a handful of paintings on the wall behind me and I turned around in my chair to follow her gaze, even though I was already familiar with the paintings in question. Three bold works of art hung on that kitchen wall, though grandma never did tell me who had painted them. All I knew with certainty was that in all three paintings, the witch being burned alive at the stake in vivid fiery brush strokes, was indeed my beloved grandma.

"Would you like some biscuits with your tea?" grandma lifted the lid off a tin of shortbread cookies before I could say yes.

"Speaking of, where is Biscuit?" I asked grandma, as I looked about the kitchen floor in search of our black cat.

"She's probably waiting for us to light a warm fire," grandma chuckled. "Oh, my! That reminds me, I've got a surprise for you! Guess what we're having for dinner? Here's a hint: it's your favourite dish..."

My face lit up with excitement. "Did you really?!"

"Yep," grandma smiled. "We're having Barley Bully Stew!"

And, with that announcement, I made a gleeful dash for the basement. That is where grandma kept her large cauldron. And just as she had predicted, Biscuit was patiently sitting not too far from the pile of wood beneath the cauldron, licking her paw and waiting for someone to set it ablaze so that she can groom in its warmth.

A whimpering cry came from the cauldron. Seeing a bewildered and naked Garret soaking in the broth brought a smile to my face. His mouth had been generously over-stuffed with sage bunch, he could barely scream for help.

I heard grandma's steps behind me, as she too descended into the basement.

"Barley Bully Stew..." she gently patted me on the shoulder. "You tend to boil, but I prefer to simmer..."

Grandma bent down to give a loving carress to Biscuit. Our black cat purred like a wild engine as she watched the witch light a roaring fire beneath the cauldron.

Thank you, bjgamer, for this Spooktober giveaway! And much respect to all our donors for their generosity. :)

I've not yet made up my mind if I am in for the prizes or just for the fun. Sorry! xD

I'll need to give this some thought and I'll edit my post once I've made a decision. :P

Edit: Decision made... Not in! The more I think about it, the more I realize that I posted my story to see if I had enough spook in me. :P That being said, I want to wish GOOD LUCK to all participants! :)

The popular story about Yotsuya Kaidan, about love, betrayal, and revenge.
The name does not refer to any character, instead, it signifies the location where the tragic events unfold, the Yotsuya district of Tokyo.
The main character is a man named Iemon. He is samurai but he is very bad man. His wife named Oiwa is very beautiful and kind but Iemon loves another woman, so he wants to get rid of Oiwa. One day, Iemon meets a woman named Oume. She is rich and Iemon thinks she will make him happy. So, he decides to poison Oiwa to marry Oume. He gives her poison in medicine but Oiwa does not know this. After some time, Oiwa becomes sick and her face becomes ugly. She feels very sad and betrayed by Iemon.
Oiwa's spirit becomes angry after she dies. She comes back as a ghost to haunt Iemon. She wants revenge for what he did to her. Iemon starts to see her ghost everywhere, and he becomes very scared. He cannot escape from her because she is always there. In the end, Iemon cannot handle the guilt and fear anymore. He tries to run away but Oiwa's ghost follows him everywhere.

The list I prepared is:
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition
- Little Nightmares
- Black Book
- Creaks Collector's Edition
- Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
- Darkwood
- Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure Deluxe Edition
- Prey

Thank you to the Spooktober Storyfest organizer bjgamer and to the community!~

Great short story, matterbandit. It'd be nice to read a sequel. I bet Garret wasn't the only bully at school. Furthermore, I wonder what would Biscuit tell if she could speak... Thanks for sharing a very well-written spooky tale.

Hmm, a sequel... I did not have one planned in my mind when I wrote that short story, to be honest. So, I'm not saying yes and I'm not saying no to your request. LOL! But, I am saying thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed reading it!

Many great tales posted in this thread! Which is what inspired me to contribute too. ;)

No pressure, man. If you really feel like expanding your short story, give your creativity wings and let it fly. If you don't want to write a next chapter, please don't force it 'cause I'm certain it's not gonna be a good story. Spontaneity is the way to go. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
Happy Haunting, bjgamer!

On the desolate stretches of the I-70, truck drivers often battled fatigue during the cold, dark nights. One frigid evening, Jake, a seasoned driver, found himself navigating a particularly lonely stretch when he noticed a flicker of movement at the edge of his headlights. Initially dismissing it as a trick of the light, he soon realized it was a woman in a flowing white dress, her hair swirling as if caught in an unseen wind. As he slowed down, torn between curiosity and caution, she turned to him, her eyes reflecting an eerie glow. Just as he was about to pull over, she vanished into thin air.
Shaken but intrigued, Jake continued his journey, replaying the encounter in his mind. Was it real? Had he imagined it? Days turned into weeks, and he found himself haunted by that fleeting moment. At rest stops and diners along the route, he began hearing similar stories from fellow drivers: a ghostly woman in white appearing on lonely roads. Each account shared striking similarities: the same ethereal figure and the same chilling sensation of being watched. Some claimed she whispered secrets of lost souls; others said she called them to stop and listen. The stories became folklore among drivers, a mystery that transcended individual experience.
Months later, Jake sat at a diner table with fellow truckers, sharing tales over steaming cups of coffee. They discussed their encounters and pondered why they had seen her. Was she a guardian spirit or a warning? Each man had his own theory, yet none could provide answers. As they spoke, Jake felt a deep sense of regret wash over him. If only he hadn't been alone that night; if only he had traveled with someone to share the burden of solitude; perhaps he wouldn't have encountered that spectral figure.
The night wore on as they nervously laughed about their experiences, but deep down, each felt the weight of their solitude. Drawn to the open road yet haunted by its shadows, they shared an unspoken truth: driving alone on those cold nights exposed them to mysteries that seemed to thrive in isolation. As Jake finished his coffee and prepared to hit the road again, he glanced out at the endless stretch of the I-70 illuminated by moonlight. With every mile driven alone, he knew he would carry that haunting memory with him.

Can I take part in the following ghostly games you have listed?

- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition
^ The Suffering + The Suffering: Ties That Bind

- Little Nightmares
- In Sound Mind - Deluxe Edition
- Pinstripe

Thanks for the invite! May your night be filled with ghoulish fun!

Thank you as well to the monster donors! HypersomniacLive, Doc0075, KillingMoon!

A Jiangshi, a Strigoi, and a vampire walk into a bar.
The bartender says, “I’ve got garlic bread specials today.”

The vampire hisses and runs out the door.

The Strigoi glares and says, “How about something without a side of death?”

The Jiangshi, unaware of the garlic, just hops by and says, “I’m only here for the hoppy hour!”

The bartender says, “What are you guys celebrating?”

Thanks and good luck everybody, happy spooky season.
Thanks bjgamer for this opportunity.

I don't celebrate Halloween in my country. Ok, youngsters in those days are trying to push it forward but basically it's not natural but enforced.

I was wondering on story I could tell. I was about to say one I walked as a kid on midnight on cemetery on All Saints Day but I will skip that.

---

I will tell my real life horror story.

We were visiting my mom New Year's Eve and it was almost midnight. I thought I will have a lot of fun, drink glass of champagne (or cheap sparkling wine) but then... they started shooting fireworks. I'm not a fan, frankly speaking I'm against due to animal stress (you might agree or not).

Then after midnight I find out that my mom's dog puke and started to have diarrhea (probably due to fireworks). It was scared to go out so decided to make it inside (again due to fireworks).

It was wonderful 1.5-2h of cleaning.

Shit hit the fan on day one - man, now not a single day will be a horror, right? :)

As I cared for animal this "horror" story made me don't like the fireworks :)
