DelusionsBeta: I do have to admit, that's is a genius structure for a pre-Christmas sale to compete with all the other digital distributor's pre-Christmas measures. I do love it when competition comes together. Tempted to pick up £1 Chime for a third entry.

Objective: get entered into the 100 game draw. That is a tasty prize and a half.

Do note that you are required to have 10 games on your Wishlist to enter.

Also, judging by the fact that we're talking Steamworks achievements, here's your chance. Nice to see they aren't locking out retail versions as well.
Agreed. I'm impressed.

It's a unique sales approach that's going to appeal to achievement junkies AND prize junkies, and is likely to drive some added sales.

Plus, with this ending on the 20th, we now know that we can likely expect the Xmas sale to kick in no earlier than the 21st. :)

p_mamusz: not sure that's worth spending £20 on R.U.S.E.
avatar
Navagon: I've seen it for less than that. Plus it's a Ubisoft game and even without the UbiDRM I'm sceptical about the quality.
Play says £9. At least retail versions are equally as valid.

As per usual, steam forum crybabies are complaining about the sale. They say it's a cheap way to get extra sales. No really? Steam isn't a charity. Nothing ever pleases them. I can't complain. I haven't bought anything and I'm still entered to win games from my wishlist. Poker Night sale looks very attractive also.

Actually, the problem is the super special hat.

You have to complete all 28 objectives to get it. Problem is, you have to own every game on the sale to get them all. And well, that's kind of a dick move.

I mean, if they'd said you needed 20 hats it would mean most people would have a shot at it. But 28? That's just mean.

I'll probably get the first two hats anyway. I bought Chime tonight, and man, HOW DID I MISS THIS WONDERFUL GAME?! IT'S AWESOME!

Someone enlighten me about this hat. Are we talking about your character just having a new texture for their hat or does it give special powers? Either way, it's a hat. If that sucks you in to buy 28 games, then you have no will power. Besides, most hardcore steam account holders will probably own most of the games already and will just need to buy a small amount of games.

Eh, not really. It's just a virtual hat in a game. Great move, actually. It's punitive towards the crazies that would actually shell out money on games they don't want for a silly TF2 hat.

It doesn't really do anything, but it's a hat. A -rare- hat. That's what matters most to certain people. I was kinda like that but my limit was "I wouldn't buy or pay for a hat. Ever." The recent Halloween event soured me on special event hats, as well.

There are still many people that'll go as far as buying that RUSE game just to get that hat. And taking advantage of certain people's OCD is just -wrong-.

But it's not real. People are crazy. Before you can finish saying, "look at my shiny new hat", your dead corpse will be lying in a pool of blood in the game.

Anyone else noticed Amazon uk's prices changing rapidly?
I ordered Red Dead Redemption for the PS3 (among Alan Wake and Split/Second for cheap) for about £17 and few hours later it is at least £25 !!!
btw they sell Alan Wake for under £15 and Split/Second (PS3) for about £16. Excellent new games at excellent prices.

Crassmaster: If that's the case, it also likely means there is a feature 'missing' from the GG version that used Steamworks to function. Might be a lack of available DLC, a missing MP mode, etc.
The only thing missing is the annoying Steamworks DRM =)

As for this Treasure Hunt thing, I'm not even going to bother. For one thing, I couldn't care less about TF2 hats (played a grand total of around 2 mins on that game anyway) and for another thing, I expect at least half of the games required are going to be regionally restricted anyhow.

So meh.

I doubt that they'll be restricted.

And if they are, they'll probably replace them with other games depending on your region, or give you a free token. :p

Purebreed: I've always wanted to play Velvet Assassin, I might be grabbing that.

pops117: Don't forget these deals run the whole week. So, if you're still unsure you might wait until sunday :D
In addition, the 4 for 3 deal still holds, so if you have 3 games you are sure you want to buy, and they're not part of the daily deal, wait till Sunday before picking them up to see if a hot daily deal comes your way.

You really don't know Valve at all, do you? Of course some will be restricted, especially if they are targeting Steamworks games. And no, they won't give a "free token" -- to get "free entry" into any of the objectives you have to mail in a postcard postmarked during the time in which that objective is offered and to arrive no later than Dec. 31.

So if you want to do that, you'll have to prepare up to 29 stamps and postcards and hope yours and the US's postal services are good enough to deliver the cards in time.

And considering that the chances of winning are so slim, it's pretty much a complete waste of time and money to go that route.
avatar
eyeball226: Definitely the real one. I guess they worked out people were copying things straight out of the temp directory so they decided to decrypt the installer to a more hidden location. It's bloody annoying considering they say the game is DRM free.
I think it's just for SR2. Perhaps some self-extracting process occurred immediately after the download had completed. I vaguely recall some GOGers saying that GG's support staff even encouraged them to use this method to bypass the DRM lol.

I've been a customer of theirs for many years. I know what kind of stuff they can pull with regional restrictions and contests.

And wow, you need to sort some issues out. :| You're getting worked up like this over a silly contest / sale? Sheesh.
