michaelleung: Killing Floor is 25% off now, making it $11.24 or something. On that digital distribution client some of us hate and like to write about every time someone mentions the word Steam.

That guy makes me wanna buy stuff off Steam. :P

No I hate it haha.

Lucibel: Yeah, I'd be interested in hearing what they say. Hmm, maybe it's true about the client, but when my files are downloaded I may try installing and activating directly from the downloaded files rather than through the client, see if that circumvents it (another forum I've read suggests you can do this).

Navagon: According to EA, backups won't work for long as the games are continually updated (like the Steam client, I'd imagine) and trying to install outdated copies through EADM will just cause error messages.
Any activations are continually refunded over time, so that won't be a problem at least.
So, combine the backup problem with the lack of ability to re-download and you are looking squarely at a rental service.
I was wondering why those games were so cheap. I'll just wait for a Steam weekend deal or something. It's not like I don't have enough games to be getting on with anyway.

Sorry to resurrect this topic, but I think what EA told you are wrong.
There is no backup 'problem', EA just doesn't make it easy for you. But making a backup just involves navigating to a download folder and copying the contents - how difficult is that?
There is word of mouth on forums I've been on that EA do now allow redownloading if you haven't made a backup.
I installed Mass Effect and Dead Space on a second computer (from backup copies) without the EA downloader being installed at all. If EA incorporated a magic code that bars me from accessing the game in the future because I'm not using EA downloader, surely they would prevent install and activation without it?
By updates, read patches. On the first PC I have the games installed on, it didn't appear Mass Effect was updated with the 2 available retail patches, so I manually downloaded and installed them myself with no issues. Conclusion: apart from downloading the games, the EA downloader is not needed at all. Overall, the whole EA experience is pretty much the same as D2D.

Lucibel: <snip>

I tried it again with Maestro this time. It worked with that. Judging from your description I shouldn't have any problem backing these up. Thanks for your help!

It's SideSwiipe. He posts the link to his shady little site once a week.
Yeah ignore SideSwiipe.

Well, I registered with an old email just to test this stuff. I'll write here if anything happens. :)

Lets put it this way, a company that hides who they are when registering their domain and then only has a PO box number as a contact address usually winds up being a scam.

Well, Shacknews has a weekend deal post and they're linking to a $7 deal on Plants vs Zombies on that site.
So I think that this guy posting this stie is annoying and spammy, but it's not a scam, even if it seems a bit too shady.
