Yes, it is a bit annoying, but at least they don't churn out "mandatory" DLC, like some companies. I usually don't bother with their mini-DLC, and the only reason why I have some sprite-packs for HoI3 was because they came with a collection, the music packs were worth it though (75% off).

There are darker points of Paradox policy than just relasing pointless DLC

I have two major problems with them:
1) as soon as they release new expansion for a game, they stop all the support for previous installments, means no further patches for non-expansion game

2) after they release the expansion they close mutliplayer metaserver for you. You need to buy all the expansions to play online on their server

But there is a good point : when they release new expansion, they mostly put the whole franchise on a big sale.

I'd just get Warband if I were you. It's the same as the original Mount & Blade, but better. Dunno anything about the upcoming Napoleonic Wars DLC, though, and I haven't played With Fire & Sword but I've heard it's not as good as Warband.

With fire & sword is not quite as polished as Warband, but still a very good game, and I found the setting to be more interesting. It is actually based on a book, which in turn is based on historical events, though as this is more of a sandbox-CRPG, the story is in itself not all that important.

I must also add the first game is not completely useless, as some mods are still exclusive to it, including The Last Days.

I would certainly jump on the collection if they gave gifts for already owned games.
