Whoa...D2D is having a 5 year anniversary sale, so they discount 10 games each week to $4.95.
This week's sale: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Ghost Recon 2, Civ 4, Farcry, Silent Hunter 3, Call of Juarez, Empire Earth Gold, Sid Meier's Railroads, X-Com Complete, and The Settlers - Heritage of Kings.
For the following weeks, they'll have sales for Action games, RPG/MMO games, Indie games, and War games.

Oh, and I don't know if Steam has this last week, but I just noticed that they now have Strategy First Complete Pack for $49.99.

That was a given. D2D are in love with their regional restions and are allergic to ROW money.

Nice. I'll have to get X-Com when I get home. Been eyeballing that for awhile. One of those classic game series I just never played. Maybe Civ 4 too.

Don't know about Vista, but it runs fine on Win7 RC (build 7100). But then, I have a boxed version, not from D2D.

Even though I'm from the US, I must say that I'm disappointed that, according to the D2D promo, $1 = 1£.

it seems d2d doesnt want my money (as a european), i would buy some games instantly ,but that are the ones that are region restricted.
On the other hand i went a local store, and brought splinter cell complete for 10€.
If d2d wants to say to non-us customers that you should buy your games @ retail instead on their store, than i will do that.
The current d2d sale is a joke for everbody outside of north america. I can only advise d2d to not take your customers for a fool.

It may not be D2Ds choice to restrict games and may be a limit placed by the publisher, it is possible the games are published by a different company in Europe. Although i'm not exactly sure around the logic of $4.95 translating to £5.

The problem with that theory is that a lot of games regionally restricted on D2D are available without restrictions on Steam or GamersGate. Likewise, there are times when a restriction exists on another service, but not on the others). This leads me to believe that the services themselves are in part responsible; perhaps by not negotiating with publishers for the other regions, preferring to concentrate on (primarily) NA only.
Of course there are times when there are restrictions across the board, and in such cases, it's obviously the publisher, but I think it's not always solely down to them.

Honestly they're really an excellent site if you live in NA. They're geared towards the US & UK. It even says it at the top right of the page.... Sometimes it isn't profitable to cater outside your target demo. I adore Swiss Raclette, but I don't blame a shop for refusing to ship a small order to me.
Also it's mostly the publishers who impose regional restrictions (e.g. EA and Spore) for various marketing reasons, not D2D. Some games are published by different pubs in different countries, too.
There are also copyright and other IP problems (i.e. some countries are first-to-file, some are first-to-invent, so you may have a name copyrighted already). I think it's slightly more complicated than you think.
If GOG sold new games, they'd probably have the same problems.

It could be an exclusivity clause in agreements with Steam or what have you as well.
I think it's quite likely that these restrictions are almost always (if not always) publisher imposed. It really doesn't make sense for a digital distribution company to not want to sell in as many areas as possible.

Regional restrictions ARE publisher imposed. If one service has European sales enabled and another not, it means the former was chosen for whatever reason to be the European digital sales arm by the games publisher.

So then do all the games for the 1st week of their sale are region locked except for xcom and empire earth? And what regions are the other games available?

Seems Canada, US, and Mexico are the ones that can access all the games on sale, from what I can tell.
