fursav: Has anyone here played Civ 5? There is a decent deal on it at amazon but I know the initial user reviews were horrible. So has the game improved at all since the release?

Psyringe: For me (and many others, check the forums at CivFanatics aound release time) the game is so spectacularly bad that it almost hurts to play it. The problems (atrocious AI, less choices for the player, removal of many game elements, crude UI that hides many values from the player and requires tons of clicks to get those that aren't hidden, etc.) are so severe, and so deeply ingrained in the design, that no amount of patching or modding is going to totally fix them. On top of it, it requires Steam. Personally, I wouldn't even buy it for 5$. There also is little chance that more non-superficial ficing will be done, because the lead designer was fired (or left voluntarily, details are unknown) in the meantime.

However, I belong to the (rather large) group of people who liked Civ4 very much. Civ5 seems to appeal more to people who didn't. In essence, the game now plays like a wargame with some additional elements tacked on. This appeals to the people who always played that way (which was tho only strategy in Civ2, a very successful strategy in Civ3, and relatively difficult in Civ4). For people who like Civ games for the atmosphere, for the feeling of being immersed in the creation of a complex alternative history while being a part of it, Civ5 has very little to offer.
Thanks for the informative reply. i guess I'll stick with the old civ games.
Quick question: I'm planning to buy the following 4 items through a US proxy (two of them aren't available in my country, the other two have a ridiculous price difference). I know about the security issues with proxies (I'll change my password specifically for this transaction), and I've already verified that I can issue such an order, choose Paypal as payment, and then set it to "Pending". What I don't know is (1) whether GamersGate tolerates such actions (There doesn't seem to be anything in their terms of service that speaks against it, but perhaps I've overlooked something), and (2) whether the games employ some form of regionalized activation that will render me unable to play them even though I can download them. Any help from more experienced users is appreciated, thanks! :)

The items are:

Max Payne 2 for 2.49 $
Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island for 5 $
Bioshock for 6.48 $
1C Complete Pack for 99.99 $

orcishgamer: Careful, the Borderlands GOTY is on sale on Amazon for 6 bucks, don't think anyone is beating that currently.

grviper: Steam Russia offers GOTY for under 4. Still not touching it. :)
You dislike Borderlands? Are you MAD?!?

Finally, your link points into 5$' Dragon Age 2 on Amazon...

I did it several times so I think they don't mind.
I've never bought regionally restricted game, only did it to get cheaper price, but had no porblems whatsoever so I think you should be OK.

... Can't you just have them gifted from a non-restricted account?

Foxhack: ... Can't you just have them gifted from a non-restricted account?
Theoretically yes, but buying them myself is easier than requiring someone to gift 71 items to me (the 1C pack consists of 68 items, and each of them would need to be gifted individually). Also, having the items bought by someone else would actually be about 6$ more expensive since I wouldn't get the blue coins payback.
Today's GG deal is Red Orchestra 2 (50% off and $20)

Deluxe Edition of it is $25, though it doesn't include anything so special.

Psyringe: (double post, please disregard)
I often used an American ip with GG during summer. And I recently bought Batman in pounds even without changing the ip and just using the .co.uk adress.

Never had a problem. In fact, I messed GG so much up, that they gave me US prices on my german ip.

Hope this helps.

You will never experience the fun that is killing Nine Toes or the beauty that is Skag Gulley.

Just a shameless bump, because I would be interested to know about this as well. I used a proxy several times to get prices in dollar, but I never bought any games that are not available in Germany. Would be great if it worked, because I'm interested in Max Payne 2 as well ;)
