DotEmu's Christmas sale has begun and will run until the 2nd of January. Discounts on the whole catalogue (I think) range from 40-80% off. The most noteworthy is probably that Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines is 40% off now and being sold for 11.99 EUR (= $?).

Would you recommend it at this price? I enjoyed VtM: Redemption and heard lots of praise about Bloodlines, but I also read it's a bit buggy? Is the DotEmu version the best I can get (if I don't care about achievements, prefer DRM-free and like 'foreign' language support) or is the Steam version superior in any way (e.g. technically, more up to date)?

If you know the answer, you could also PM me in order not to derail the thread, unless you think it's of interest to other readers, too.

The patches that fix the game are unofficial and it won't matter what version you'll use. Steam might be more annoying since you'll have to disable automatic updates and overlay.

This is true, but it has been on sale for $5 a few times this year though, so... $5 on Steam (Hopefully will be reduced for holiday sale again) or $12 at DotEmu DRM-Free. Your choice.

On one hand, you can probably get the game cheaper if you're willing to wait - I got a physical disc for 2.50 € from a bargain bin in an electronics store. One the other hand, the game _is_ worth 12$ imho. The game has nothing to do with VtM:Redemption except that they both use the background of the respective pen&paper role playing game, but none of the two is a "faithful" representation of the game's rules, and they play at totally different times and places (and were developed by different teams). VtM: Bloodlines _does_ capture the atmosphere extremely well and is a great, mature RPG with interesting characters and storylines, freedom of choice (alternative quest outcomes depending on your actions and decisons, lots of optional quests), good graphics, excellent voice acting, very good music, and great replayability. The main criticism against it was that it was terribly buggy and badly balanced, but you can remedy that by getting the Unofficial Patch by Wesp5 (make sure it's from Wesp5, there's another unofficial patch that calls itself "true" patch but I wouldn't recommend it). Also, people who are very much into the pen and paper game were disappointed by some rules implementations and plot decisions, but that's really of no concern to people who aren't hugely involved in the "official" VtM universe. In short: The _relevant_ shortcomings of the game have been remedied by now, I absolutely recommend it, and while you probably can get it cheaper if you wait long enough, it's well worth 12$.

Side note: If you consider getting the Steam version, make sure that it's compatible to mods like the Unofficial patch. There's also a still active modding scene around the game (check "Planet Vampire" for a list).

Steam only lists XP support, DotEmu also Vista and Win7 - but I assume those are mere formalities and the versions aren't really different from each other? If Bloodlines is as good as everyone claims, I wouldn't mind getting the DRM-free version for 12 EUR. But I probably won't play it anytime soon, so maybe I'll just wait and hope DotEmu is going to repeat the offer somewhen in the future.

I suppose the retail version only had German language support though? Or can you install English and French language, too?

Thanks for the detailed reply, btw. I haven't played the P&P game and I don't care that much about rules; in fact I found the gameplay of VtM:R to be so-so and mainly liked it for the setting and atmosphere, so chances are I'd like Bloodlines, too.

They should be pretty much identical, yes. Quite frankly, it doesn't matter at all, because you don't want to play the game unpatched anyway and bypassing the Steam DRM is easily done during the modding process. And I can confirm the (patched) Steam version runs on my W7 64bit.

I definitely played the game in English. I _think_ the retail version was in German originally and I downloaded a patch that turned it into an English version, but it's been a while and I'm only 70% sure.
Does anybody know if The Abbey sold at DotEmu is the "Director's Cut" version?
