Balazs: Can you compare it to some more mainstream games?
Strategy.. and mainstream... umm...
Well, the game doesn't have a research tree. You do get to advance a few military techs and the government tech but each of the tech lines have no branching and are described simply by levels. That said, each country has many specific historical units, so even having identical levels they can be quite different.
You build things in the provinces like in the Total War games pretty much to the same effect. New units, profit, trade, defenses.
Diplomacy is complicated with all the expansions installed, because you get access to things like royal marriages, and have to follow the rules for starting wars with minimal loss of prestige. Otherwise you'll be considered a threat and the neighbours could unite against you. However there are records of successful world dominations, including one with the Iroquois tribe converting Rome, Mecca and Jerusalem to shamanism.

Balazs: Can you compare it to some more mainstream games? It's a hard decision for me, 'cause I enjoy strategy games in general, but I'm not sure if the depth of it wouldn't scare me off at first.

SimonG: They are best compared to other Paradox titles, especially Victoria. Apart from that, I think they are pretty unique. But they are totally worth it, once you got the hand of it. I think EU III is actually less complex than Vicki or HoI.

If you like looking at some historical map of the world and like to think "what would have been, if ..." it is your game.

Edit: My steam clock says I've played 98 hours and on Steam I only had the first three expansions. I later bought chronicles on GG, which I played at least as much! Just don't go for the demo, it is based on the core game, which is on no way comparable to the full Chronicles experience.
And also @grviper:

Thanks a lot for the help! I think I'll pick it up now, I just hope I won't be disappointed. :)

grviper: All I need from these guys is to take X Superbox price to around 15,000 BC. Then I'll have a DRM-less replacement, for the same thing I got much cheaper but on Steam. Maybe I'll even play it.
This is number 1 on my wishlist. Good to know the GG version is DRM-free. i hope either Steam or GG has it on sale for $10 over Xmas. That would make my holiday. Number 2 on my wishlist is the 1C Sci-Fi Pack on Steam (Star Wolves Trilogy and Space Rangers 1&2 and another game). Hope that will be on sale for $10 too.
Silent Hill Homecoming is 75% off on Steam. €4.99 here. I have no idea what it's like I just remember a lot of fanrage about it not being developed by Konami in-house.
