TARFU: Well, I guess the difference I am seeing here is that I don't believe in the concept of "hate speech". There is only speech one agrees with, speech one disagrees with, and speech one is indifferent to. Furthermore, Being a denizen of the internet since 1995 and a denizen of earth for much longer, I have skin made of titanium armor and 99.9% of trolling (especially trolling so obvious) bounces off of me.
You don't believe that there's speech that can incite harm to others, not just through the word, but through the actions of people? Hate speech exists and was the foundation of Nazi propaganda which caused the deaths of masses if innocent people for no other crime than being Jewish, gay, black or otherwise "imperfect." People were rounded up, herded into camps by armed men and experimented on, tortured and killed in a multitude of ways. Men, women, children. It did not matter. You don't believe that the Nazi party used hate speech?
How about the people of the Westboro Baptist Church, inciting people to protest and attempt to deny access to funerals for people they believe were punished by God? Attempting to incite violence with speech is very possible, and doing it based on someone's inborn attributes is hateful.
I dislike a lot of people for a lot of reasons, and I am not ashamed to admit it. I've debated in mostly friendly terms with people on here like dtgreene and others about the merits and my personal perceived ridiculousness of some things. But I've never come out and supported the idea that people should be rounded up and killed for being who they are, as long as who they are aren't hate-mongering people trying to tear down society themselves. Words may bounce off you. But bullets, clubs and hangman's nooses will definitely penetrate your armor once you find yourself on the wrong side of a hate-inspired speech.
sunshinecorp: So fight nazis by ignoring them. Maybe throw in a hug and some flowers. They'll understand.
I wonder what would have happened back in WWII if people like you were the majority...
They were at first. That's how the Nazi party gained as much power as they did because people ignored it and turned a blind eye until it was too big to stop.
