TARFU: Whether they believe their posts or not, trolling is still trolling. I can't even prove if anyone on here is real or which people are genuine or just sock puppets.

And like I've said, the only behavior I can control is my own. I'm not the enforcer/policeman of the internet. Not only that, but unless you start banning by IP number, these trolls will be back with alt accounts before you can blink. I've seen it happen on other forums.

No spare pass-tees laying around? Lol

tinyE: I do but honestly I hate those fucking things. :P
There's worse foods. Howabout a greeeesy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?

So that's what your vast knowledge of the internet has taught you...
Trolling is specifically posting to provoke reactions. If, for example, you post saying that the earth is flat and then laugh at the chaos that ensues, that is trolling. If on the other hand you post that the earth is flat because you actually believe that the earth is flat, and don't care about what posts the others make, that is not trolling. And depending on what the post says (Hey everyone, let's set fire to government buildings!), treating said post as a troll post may be ill advised.

TARFU: but unless you start banning by IP number
Why do people assume that the IP number is static? There are currently ~4.2 billion IPv4 addresses, and way more people than that. Add to it the IP ranges that are assigned for specific functions (10.0.0.x, 192.168.x.x), and a single IP address may be used by multiple people, and most people also use multiple IP addresses. Until IPv6 is properly used, assuming that IP banning actually does something is almost on the same level as assuming every post is a troll post.

But what do I know, I'm just a person on the internet, thus most likely trolling.

Edit: Forgot to say, thank you for your answer.

TARFU: That sounds like playing right into the troll's game. Do you really think someone like tauto/kleetus would ever get tired of creating alt accounts and causing chaos?
avatar
sunshinecorp: Doesn't matter if it goes into infinity. You're getting paid to do just that.
Not a job for me, I'll say. Sounds as productive as beating your head against a brick wall. :(

That sounds like some guud eating.

How does one prove if someone is trolling just to troll or actually believes their troll post? You can't prove it for sure and would it matter if you could?

IP banning does work, to a certain extent.
There is an x factor here that I've been talking to sunshinecorp about, and he told me not to worry about it, but I'm going to mention it anyway, and that's getting a Mod/Community manager in here that hasn't done their homework.

I don't file complaints but a lot of the "trolls" do and someone new to the job is likely to come in, see a shit load of tickets about me, none about tauto/kleetus/bradley/infinite9 and come to the conclusion that I'm the problem in here.

This has already happened once and scared the shit out of me.
Hey Bradley! You should rename yourself PeSaNtBrAdLeY7! Actually scratch that, that's too prestigious for you...
How about KiNgBAdLeY? Because you would rule a kingdom... badly!

Hey Bradley! Maybe if you want to help stop devolution you should stop saying words! Whats that? Too unoriginal? Well I'm sorry but being sentient fecal matter that can type isn't the most brilliant idea either!

Hey Bradley! Have you played Freddi Fish 2? No?...
...Well you're much better at this than me.

TARFU: How does one prove if someone is trolling just to troll or actually believes their troll post?
If it's a troll post, then by definition he's trolling. So the question should be how do you know if it's a troll post or not?

avatar
TARFU: You can't prove it for sure and would it matter if you could?
Same as one can't prove for sure if one is not trolling. All it does is change the how you view the other poster.

And carpet bombing works for assassinations as well. But just like IP banning, it's not the right tool for the job.

Remember, not banning you is on record as a fullfilled wish on the wishlist :) They can't touch you now!

Seriously though, I can hardly imagine this forum having a problem with a overeager mod. It sounds like me having a gilfriend who is just too damn sexy. Still, if we ever do get any mods here I doubt they would be so bad at their job to so completely misidentify the problematic users. And just in case- that is why I'm "collecting" all the particularly disgusting posts by our favourite colleagues.
Since we are making a collection here, check out Bradley's #7.

He doesn't actually want that game here, he just wants everyone to see him ask for it.

And yet apparently we're supposed to react with nothing but a sitcom-like shrug and say "that's our Bradley!"

why you pick on bradley what he do to you :-/ you crazy? first you pick on me because i like music from "dirty black men" and games like kingpin and now it's bradley. who'll be next tomorrow? there's always got to be somebody right? someone else than you. i think you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself - trolling innocent people might be bad for your health... :-(

And sunshinecorp, let me know if his post gets deleted so I can change this post and it doesn't look like I'm pointing up at you. :P
