Matewis: Well, except perhaps for Mortal Kombat IV. I was absolutely deadly with Reptile in that. For some reason I sucked completely at all the other Mortal Kombat games I tried, particulary MK3.
Well, probably because they're very different games - 1&2 are similar, but 3 (and Ultimate and Trilogy) is a whole new system (dial-a-combo, running), then 4 is again different (3D / side-stepping, again a different combo system, this time with limiters, but exploitable), then no PC ports therefore they're not important, then 9 & 10 which play nothing like any of the older games. Reptile is one of the characters that got changed quite a bit sequel to sequel. Personally, I loved him the most in 4 as well.

On-topically: platformers, rhythm games.
Maybe Crimzon Clover, though I think I could beat the game if I put in enough effort and practice.

(Yes, that is a game that takes practice to beat without using a continue.)

OneFiercePuppy: Life. I need a cheat code so bad.
Oh, you prick. You stole my punchline.
FPS mostly: I enjoy one from time to time but I'm too focused on stealth approaches and I'm actualy pretty bad in a fast-paced direct encounter. Too many hours leveling sneak and archery in Skyrim :V

Oh yes, his crawl and sliding palm attacks are devastating in mk4! It works particularly well against Goro as well, specifically against his jump-stomp attack. If you time it right then a crawl at the right moment can catch Goro mid air and give you the initiative.
Generally I find I enjoy games I have not yet 'beaten' or 'figured out' the most. Minecraft for example is ideal, because it mostly thrives on your own imagination and if that fails, there's a million mods. Literally.

I also remember playing Gothic and Cossacks (both are here on GOG) when I was a lot younger and failing catastrophically. It took me ~three years of playing Gothic almost every day before I finished it. By cheating. I was THAT bad. I should revisit the game and finish it legitimately. Cossacks on the other hand I played the same savegame over a year. I couldn't believe it when I won the first battle. I just revisited the game yesterday and I am amazed at how easy the game actually can be if you know what you are doing. Young me probably was quite retarded.

Weirdly, those were probably among the most fun I have ever had in gaming.

Powerball...

Many dollars given, pathetically few taken away.

(working as designed for me)
Bullet hell and shmups in general, I am TERRIBLE at these and usually have to rely on free play to even make progress, Tyrian excepted since that one I am competent at. I die all the time but a lot of these games have amazing soundtracks and set pieces that make me press on and just play despite being terrible at them.
Red Alert 2, HOMM3 and Sacrifice. I'm not sure I suck but I'm not particularly good. In Red Alert 2 I always picked islands or places where I've had a chokepoint so I didn't need much strategy, merely keep the computer occupied until I created enough of a big army to destroy them (granted, I mostly experimented with all the units rather than actually trying to win).

HOMM3 I only have 1 hero, sure I use more as scouts but they aren't particulrarly useful when creatures block the way since they have only 1 unit with them.

I don't think I'm any good in Sacrifice too, I turtle way too much (like all strategy games) but it's a great game nonetheless.

I've been thinking of playing more strategy games lately as I like the challenge of becoming better at them but I usually end up focused on some indie or RPG instead.
Tales of Maj'Eyal.

Have you given Mount and Blade : Warband a thought then? It combines all three. Well, perhaps not really quite strategy, but you do get to make squads and give them pretty much any orders, like where to stand, when to attack, what to attack with etc.

I've it on Steam but I never really got into it. I'm not sure why.

Matewis: I guess my first example would be HoMM3. I got my hands on a demo back when it released originally, and I thought it was incredible. Of course, the computer wiped the floor with me each time :P

As for right now, that game is Dwarf Fortress. I'm trying to make some headway into it, and so far I am miserably failing at each turn. Yet weirdly, it's incredibly fun at the same time. The interface kind of sucks though :P

edit: Oh yeah, and starcraft. I thought I was pretty good at it until I tried playing against my friends :P And Red Alert for that matter, which is when I learned for the first time that skirmish tactics are less than useless against even an okayish human :P
Of course all of them. I don't bother to invest more time to get better when I have so much games to try with limited time.

OCD in power gaming and hording stuff does not count.
I suck at most games but still I'am quite competent in RTS games.

Currently im very much enjoying Starward Rogue (bullethell/shmup/roguelite) from Arcen games although I have only won one run out of 51 LoL which means that I will never be able to finish the game.

InfraSuperman: Strategy/4X games, fighting games, and RPGs.
With a few exceptions, I'm pretty awful at any game in these genres, and yet I like playing them.

And Dwarf Fortress taught me the joy of failure in a game.
Did you play around with any of the 'prettier' tilesets? I tried a couple, but weirdly, the ones I tried each somehow made the game look even worse than the standard ascii version.
