dudalb: Never got why Bioshock needed a remaster.
Yeah, this. I only just played through the original one or two years ago, for the first time, and it looked and ran perfectly fine.

darthspudius: Strongly disagree about Deus Ex. Since day one that game was horrible to look at, featured ugly voice overs and had some really bad music. Also, the fact that the character has no weight at all behind his movement is just bloody annoying. Perfect game my ass!
I disagree. the music is awesome, the voice over is fun, and the movements are ok.

Sabin_Stargem: This is a stupid idea. Fact of the matter is that technology and technique shall march forward, and the games of yore suffer when compared to their modern relatives. Renovating those old games is important for keeping them as they were intended: A source of fun.

Battling awful controls, poorly worded dialogue, misconceived balance, technical ghouls, and whatever else that plagues games is frustrating. Old games should be understood for why they are great, but they shouldn't be treated as sacred cows.
Super Mario Brothers: What can you add to this?

Maighstir: Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale II
Planescape: Torment
Is that for...or against? Also, why?

I just completed it a few weeks before the remaster also and agree there was little difference to be noticed. The thing with the Bioshock remakes was just to get them out on to the next gen consoles though wasn't it? I don't think they would have been done otherwise...
I don't know about games but Mel Gibsons remake of "The Life of Brian" was just depressing.

Would you also be in favor of coloring Casablanca and adding 3D effects to it, because technology has marched forward and the movies of yore suffer when compared to modern blockbusters? :P

Joking aside, I think completely rejecting the idea that some works don't really need a remake or remaster is just as rigid and irrational as completely opposing any remakes and attempts at remastering. It should be viewed on a case-to-case basis, and that's what this thread was meant for. That being said, I think the issue is not so much with remakes and remasters being created, but with remakes and remasters completely replacing the originals, removing them from stores (even if they're still working and there's still an audience for them), or even trying to remove them from gaming history (by pretending the new version is the real game like it should be and the old one should be forgotten).

Yeah seriously. Lost all the humor of the original and went for the goresploitation cash-in.

Depends on what remaster you use. For my copy of Super Mario All-Stars, the graphics and sound were quite improved, with physics tweaked to more closely resemble SMB3. As for SMB Deluxe, you can replay completed levels with a score trial. Also, it is a portable game that also includes The Secret Levels. Both of these remasters includes the ability to save your game.
Starcraft.

Atlantico: Starcraft.
Agreed. The original still holds up on its own and runs just fine on current systems.

Just for your information, I have completely stoped reading your posts these days. English is not my first language, and on top of decoding English I also need to guess what you are trying to say. It is just too much hassle, and as a result when I see your strang way of typing, I now just skip it. It is a shame, as becor I agreed quite alot with you, but it is just too much hard work for something which should be fun/leisure.l, and I prefer to engage with / read those who make the effort themselves to be understood.
Well, english is not my first language either, and I assumed that was why I enjoyed stopping at, and decoding, Fairfox's posts.

But anyway, I originally just came in this thread to say three words : "Sands", "of", and "time".

I am a native English speaker, and can't understand Fairfox's posts half the time.
I think the nearest I can come to describing his style is "Hipster Gibberish". Of course I suspect he might be trolling us.

Those games are too great, too awesome, to allow their legacy to be pulled down by half-assed remakes.
They don't deserve to be pushed down in the mud like that, they deserve better, they deserve to be remembered for what they are.
