It was a simplistic top down Civil War game from the early 90s. It wasn't very complicated, but it did have a recruitment system and even an encyclopedia that would list off facts while you played. I literally bought my first computer so I could play strategy games like that. Even before Doom or Tie Fighter, I was getting into PC gaming via historical strategy games.

And now... over 20 years later and wargaming has become the tiniest of teeny tiny niche crowds in video game land. Grognards are one step away from joining the flight simulator gang down in the basement.

Yeah... I'd really love to play a good modern era military flight sim, that is NOT hard-core. Seems there are only either simplistic action games (HAWX) or uber-realistic simulators like Flaming Cliffs or Black Shark. I really miss the "mid-range" games, like in the past F-117A and Gunship 2000, later US Navy Fighters and the Jane's series and my absolute favourite for a long time: Total Air War.

Maybe because of Prototype 2? Where the game mechanics is better, however the story......

You Are Empty (2006). FPS made in my country. Very good graphics, atmosphere, soundtrack, cinematics. Poor story and gameplay mechanics, but still a very-very solid game!

Also Daikatana (2000). But tbh I don't feel like this game fits this topic since it's a very popular game and many folks like it. It's a great game with a very few downsides to it spoiled by "fans" who wanted it to be some kind of revelation.

I liked it too. It's probably my favourite "warcraft clone" actually. Nice graphics, fun gameplay. Battle for Middle Earth was a better game I guess, and a little more original, but that does not detract from War of the Ring in my opinion. Just two different approaches to the same thing.

You're defiantely not the only one. It's one of my top three favourite FPS games of all time. And while it didn't get the reception it deserved, not to mention sequels, it still has a fanbase and mostly positive reviews.

I see most, if not all, gamers, actually hated it and no one liked it. I played it though and i beg to differ. It was really fun and the forest stage with the many obstacles, was really challenging! Also, the trans double bonus was hilarious, as the sound effects, rare speech lines and stuff. It seems to me that only i liked this game, in the end of the day...

I remember the autosave bug, where loading the autosave would sometimes result in the game not loading enemies, items or events. And occasionally the game froze on the loading screen.

The worst though was the atrocious mouse handling. Out of the box, the camera controls were absolutely unplayable. I spent hours hunting down unofficial fixes and trying different ini settings until I had at least something manageable, but it was still anything but stellar.

The first Prototype was great, but the second felt really...meh.
Too bad it was published by EA, others would probaböy give it another shot, but they seem to love throwing good ip´s in the bin after one game. :/

Treasure Adventure Game. It is humiliating, but I seem to be unable to beat it. Still, I like it.

Quest 64. The game is often considered bad, but I actually like that game. (Of course, I wouldn't call the game exactly balanced: Avalanche and Magic Barrier (both Earth spells) are overpowered.)

The biggest issue with other people's reviews of the game is docking the game for not having much of a story. Not every game (or even every game advertised as an RPG) needs a story, and I actually prefer my games without them.

Isaac Asimov's Robot City.

I had a lot of fun trying to solve this one, back when my father bought my first PC in 96.

I still find its graphic design to be rather weak, but there are many interesting elements in its investigation/story, including random elements.

Still, Robot City is a place I'd love to visit in full HD resolution rebuilt in something like UE4 and using some actual retro futuristic designs.
