Preferably strategy and RPG (action and shooters are good for too).

Something like Might&Magic/Wizardry settings where magic and alien technology coexist, or like good old WarWind series where alien races fight each other and against human invaders for their home planet using bizarre psyonics and nature magic and ancient technologies.

Not very fond though of Arcanum-like steampunk vibe and WH40K grotesque approach.

Early Ultima suits fine, CyberMage more or less.

Total Annihilation: Kingdoms and its Iron Plague addon with Creon race is just right (despite its steampunk-ish tint).

Hellgate:London is more 'sci-fi' than 'fantasy' but good nevertheless.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to point out, I prefer Good and Old stuff, so please no MMORPGs, mobile and console games. And I run WinXP still on my secret oldgaming-purposed PC (and WILL run whatever Microsoft's or whoever else's 'policy' would be ever)...

Not on GOG (or on PC at all except via emulation), but there's SaGa Frontier; the game has both magic and playable robots (though unfortunately robots can't use magic here). (Note that SaGa Frontier 2 is not like this; it's more pure medieval fantasy.)

Also not on GOG, but the Star Ocean series would qualify. There's also the Phantasy Star series, especially 1 and 4, that might qualify.

I could also mention Centauri Alliance, an obscure Apple 2/Commodore 64 game that can be described as "Bard's Tale in space"; problem is that the interface is rather clunky and there are some major bugs (not to mention the fact that it never got an IBM PC port). (I note that there's even a fantasy themed world, and one of the races available to party members can transform into various forms, including a couple dragon forms.)

Of course, there are science fiction settings with magical elemements; this would include Star Wars games (the force is basically magic), or Alpha Centauri (where native life forms fight using psionics).

(By the way, know of any games with playable robot mages? There's the SaGa 2 remake, but I can't think of any others.) Not even good old console games, like the ones I mentioned in my post?

Don't remember correctly if Guardian character in Sacred 2 (that Anubis-headed robot guy) could use magic?

A robot-mage would be my dream fulfilled too :) Some Diablo-clone with such playable character (think of enhanced Harbinger game, like Harbinger 2...) Well, I'm not very experienced with old console games (and not-PC platforms globally) and their emulation TBH. My experience is limited with Steam port of good old Golden Axe trilogy and some few Amiga titles (including Perihelion that suits my request too, and Albion in its PC incarnation).

But I'm open to anything really Good and Old ;)

System Shock? Futuristic, with psionics. (More along the lines of all aliens trying to kill you).

The Vampire The Masqurade games (Bloodlines and Redemption). Technology with vampire magic.

Albion (RPG) - Crew of a spaceship crash-lands on an alien planet with a somewhat fantasy-like world (there are druids and magic and warriors etc.).

Yeah, JRPGs tend to make frequent use of this. Even Western JRPGs, since my mind went straight to Septerra Core, but I'd say also Anachronox, though that is more sci-fi.

Disagree about the VtM games though, there's no sci-fi there, only present day.

IIRC, there's no fantasy in the former, and no sci-fi in the latter. I'd want that these worlds would have some other characters besides blue-haired big-eyed ones, with the same face expression, over and over again, thousands of them...

Shadowrun games for Sega and Snes. If I remember correctly, Windows XP handles emulation well enough. EDIT: Oh, sorry, missed no console games part! I don't know if Shadowrun Returns will be able to run on XP.

Also, I would advise to look among games based on Marvel and DC comic universes - there are both advanced alien tech and magic used by superheroes and supervillains. Duh!

Oh, and on superhero note - Freedom Force is cool.

Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall both run fine on WinXP. They are just too cyberpunk for me though. And cyberpunk IMO is not equal to sci-fi, it's just pays too much attention to dystopian fancy to my taste.

I was going to say Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger but I see JRPGs were already mentioned.

Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends is a game in this genre that I've always wanted to try. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it is available digitally anywhere
