Preface: This is not a thread to debate censorship or concepts thereof. Those are entirely subjective. If you want to discuss such concepts, do it in another thread.

As one tends to do in the dead of night, I was browsing forums. I found a thread titled similarly to this, but inside it hadn't made much progress.

I think I have a perfectly valid example of a game improved by excising content in international release.

In one of the more recent Fire Emblem games, there was a "petting" minigame. What this otaku pandering was doing in a turn based strategy game on the 3DS of all things, is a mystery of the Earth itself.

Now, the challenge I issue is this: Can you think of any other examples where a game is actually improved by the removal of content in this manner? I suppose "comedic" examples such as South Park might work, even though I think that show should have ended eons ago and most of the humor is beneath me.

For a minor discussion, does replacing foul language with Woolseyisms work in your eyes? (IE "Son of a Submariner!")

In my opinion your example doesn't qualify as censorship it's just cutting something from a game which the devs deem not good enough or not neccesary in the end.

I know you don't want this kind of discussion so i keep it short :) There are no good examples censorship is always a bad thing.

PS: Or you mean something else with "petting"? but even then it should have remained in the game no matter where on the world.

Removing some of the fowl language in GTA and their Gangsta characters would be a huge improvement. I am all in for swearing a like a trooper, but when it sounds this forced and corny, I just don't want it. But that never happened.

The censorship in Manhunt 2 was good. People disliked it but I thought the addition of a weird filter etc made it quite interesting and left a bit to the imagination.
I suspect Unepic might qualify. When you start the game for the first time, you get to choose between a 12+ and a 16+ version, which can't be changed later (without manually editing a file). From what I understand, the 16+ version contains a lot of profanity, which is largely unnecessary; the 12+ version is more tame language wise. I remember seeing a forum post from somebody who wanted to switch from 16+ to 12+ after starting the game, because the profanity was just too much for them.

Also, Final Fantasy Legend 2 (English version of SaGa 2) replaced an illegal drug with bananas. "For some reason, bananas are not allowed in this world." (The whole plot of that world involves the trafficing of the drug in question, so in the English version, they're trafficing illegal bananas.)

I think your confusing GTA and Chiken Run...

"Ain't no Henfecker gonna run my hood". Actually that might improve GTA San Andres considerably.
The name of the final boss (well, semi-final really) in Xenogears is my pick. It's a massive spoiler if you haven't beaten the game, but cool to look up. I think Kotaku did an article about it some years ago. Which reminds me, this year is the 20th anniversary of Xenogears.

The problem is that improvement is also very subjective criteria. Like you say that to pet female characters in RPG/strategy game is wrong. But others would disagree.

As for replacing foul language with some quirky remarks - it can be good if done right. But the problem is exactly that - to done it right you need professional writers who will make such replacement funny (and maybe even meaningful), which censors are definitely not.

Homo detected
How do you even know what qualifies? I have plenty of people I know who are just outright offended by even the premise of conquering lands or killing any creatures.

I also agree that censorship is art and that art is walking a fine line between something that either might in the end turn out funny, quirky and unique or just outright cheesey or nonsensical to the point of destroying the entire experience and the immersion in a game.

It's a huge risk.

Bisexual, actually. But more simply, I just found the minigame ridiculous in concept.

I have played SaGa 2, and do recall it. I think bananas were a step too far; but I suppose anything resembling drugs would have simply got redstamped from Nintendo's especially strict policies of the time.

As for Unepic, I do recall reading some posts and reviews that were along the line of "ow the edge", and it was a factor in why I decided not to play as I was entirely unaware of such a feature.

Unless it's a "parody censorship" as in, not really censorship but for example the devs putting a big "censored", blurring the picture, or putting kitten images to poke fun as censorship, there is no "improvement" to be had with censorship.
I don't know about games but the lovely person they had at the bar last night who had to used the f word every third word was a delight.

There are just so many better and creative swears. People need to check a thesaurus every once in a while or learn to creatively insult.
