I'm at a quandary: I'm trying to find games for my mom. I get her usually match 3, and some of those roads to rome. Thats all she pretty much plays.

For Christmas, I got her a nice laptop that can play much more modern games. So I am looking for something that she could enjoy that is more modern - or something other than match 3. She is a huge game lover. Here is the catch:

1. She has a learning disability, 75yrs old (5th grade education), but is always eager to learn computers
she is very good for her age and ability. can maneuver around the file explorer
2. Can read very little. So hidden objects are out.

So along with her Christmas present of a new laptop, Like to add some games for her as well.

Sounds like she enjoys mostly casual games? Peggle might be a nice one.

There are a surprising number of wordless adventure games as well. Pretty much everything from Amanita Design (Samorost series, Machinarium, Botanicula) requires no reading ability since everything's conveyed in pictures.

The only game my mum ever got into besides Tetris was Broken Sword. Although we played it together and helped each other through the puzzles

Would she enjoy the Creatures games that are available here?

Sparkle 2 is the best casual-type game I know of. Or does that count as a match-3 game? Shrug. It's awesome.

What about something like Art of Gravity or Grow Home?

I was going to suggest Machinarium, but zeogold got ahead of me, but yeah, maybe she'll like it (it's a puzzle-solving game with a really pretty artstyle, in my opinion). Also, that's a really nice gesture of you to do that for your mom!

I may try that, what makes it difficult, we live in two different states, so I usually call her, or text (just got her an android, so ther voice to text she absolutely loves, since now she doesnt have to worry about correct spelling, which I told her it was not an issue anyways), so maybe I can walk her through some parts...

By match 3, do you mean games like Bejeweled or Candy Crush?

If she likes those, you could try something like Zuma - it's similar to those games but a little more fast paced, in that you shoot colored balls towards others.

If she has decent reflexes, there are also modern remakes of older arcade games with slightly different rules like Pac-Man Champion Dx. Similarly, maybe a racing game would be easy to learn, light on reading, and feel more modern to her?

Finally, some open ended games like The Sims can be fun for people at different stages of learning. My daughter doesn't fully understand the rules, but still finds it a lot of fun to play around in. Perhaps something like this would work?

EDIT: Another thought, but how about ambient games like Proteus, Mountain, or Everything? My understanding is that these games are more about the atmosphere than trying to reach a win condition, so even if she cannot navigate 3-d space well, she may still enjoy the experience.

Gorogoa might be perfect.

Never Alone is a pretty easy platformer and has much more audio than reading---wait until it goes on sale, though.

Trine is also not too hard, lots of nice story narration, there is a little reading but not too much.

And you could try this $1.00 bundle from Fanatical (formerly BundleStars, completely legit Steam key sellers). At least two of them are match-3s and if she likes even one of the games, you're ahead.
