Avogadro6: If he's played only on consoles then he missed out on FPS, RTS, TBS and RPGs.

I'd get him Doom (the classic one). Seriously. It's THE quintessential PC game.

Also AoW:Shadow Magic, Civ4, XCOM:EW if he's interested in the TBS genre. Maybe watch a couple of let's play before deciding.

Starmaker: Terraria is as close to a universally likeable game as possible.

Actually, there are definitely RPGs on consoles. It's just that, for whatever reason, consoles have attracted a different style than PCs did.

For example, Final Fantasy 5 and Wizardry 8 (both among my favorite games of all time) are very different from one another, but they're still both RPGs.
If you like some puzzlers maybe try Ittle Dew aswell?

Card City Nights is a digital CCG-type game where you only have card battles.

I didn't say there aren't RPGs for consoles (I've had a PS1 btw, which is now borked unfortunately) I said he missed out on a few genres because they never reached the same popularity they had on PC.
There is a ton of PC classics that console players probably never heard of, and even those that were ported (e.g. Doom or C&C) were simply not as fun to play as the originals - first and foremost because they didn't work that well with a controller.
If your friend would like to dip toes into the RPG pool, I think Driftmoon would be a good place to start.

Fairfox: It's never on GOGie sale :(. Been in my Wishlist for EVERZ.
You can always opt for the free online version @ Armor Games. ;)
Thanks to all for your suggestion.

Please feel free to give further answers in this thread
since I have marked it "solved" inadvertantly (I thought
I could mark more posts as a solution, although the marked one has clearly deserved it). :-)

I'd put that up as a suggestion on the community wish list a while ago - threads should have an option to mark multiple solutions. (This is the first time I mention it on the forum though :) )
