Don't buy childish games, they generally insult kids intelligence, last thing you want to do with kids is underestimate them.

A copy of Doom or Quake would be great. Its fast paced, not too grown up and has lots of cool monsters. Great for a kids imagination.
Prehistorik here on GOG.
Commander Keen on Steam.

WBGhiro: Undertale is probably a great kids' game even if they won't get the earthbound references
Undertale had Earthbound references?

*Never played EarthBound*

Actually, Undertale has a lot of references. One scene in Final Fantasy 6 is referenced here, for example, and there's a reference to a defunct file sharing network, and other things.

A child might not get the references, but getting the references is not necessary to enjoy the game.
Little Inferno has way simple mechanics, and burning stuff is fun!
Pinball! Not much depth, but quite enjoyable!
Some games my son enjoyed when he was 7 (many are android/mobile games):

Plants vs Zombies (1 & 2)
Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare
Minecraft
Minecraft: Story Mode
Minion Rush
Minion Paradise
Scribblenauts
Turbo Dismount
Sam & Max Hit the Road
SimCity 2000

I agree fully with the first one.
And then I must LOL. Good reasoning. :D

Oh and the OP can't do anything wrong with any Mario games.

I don't believe in shielding children from things (within reason). Its how I was brought up. Never did me any harm. :D
