I am playing once a week online together with my familiy including my dad, who is 60+, and my two sisters, who are "casual-gamers". While i would call myself near the hardcore gamer type.

We have played Guild Wars 2, WoW and D&D Neverwinter. We started as 4 people with Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3. But its always kind of difficult to be really entertaining for everyone as skills differ greatly. This is ok, because the main purpose is to do something together, while we are distributed all over the country. But we still search for something which can be enjoyed by all together.

PvP isn't an option as my dad just can't keep up with other gamers out there. So all those MOBAs aren't an option. More slow-paced strategic stuff would be nice. Some simulation games, but it should be cooperative.

As this is a great community of all types of gamers, i am sure there are some suggestions for games we should try.

Warsow I would suggest Chaos Reborn as it's demo on steam has multiplayer function with some leveling limitation.

Depends on what kind of games you guys enjoy. I think 5+ player games are kind of rare, without going into MMO territory. Certain Sports and Racing games perhaps?

Oh, and I'm pretty sure you could set up a 5 player match in Starcraft 2 and other Strategy titles.

Yeah, playing some table top games via table top simulator would probably be for the best.
Failing that, Borderlands 1 and 2?

Make some "Family vs AI" matches and have some fun. Your father can play an assistive role if he finds the games too quickpaced (esp. the 2004 version).

Well that's more players than I can round up so I don't know, but perhaps Co-Optimus might have some suggestions.

Woha!!! Those were my exact thoughts.

For some mad laughs, try out Magicka. I finished that one with a friend coop a while back. It's great fun, but it can be a bit buggy at times.

There are lots of laugh out loud moments in the game, in part due to the freedom of casting whatever the hell you want. One time we fought off a goblin raid on a farm house, and during the course of the battle the lady of the farm caught on fire (my friend decided right from the start that he liked bigass fireballs above all else). We frantically tried to extinguish the flames with water beams, except I must have combined water with arcane while he combined water with life. Life and Arcane are polar opposites in the game, so we ended up exploding the poor woman. I've never heard my friend laugh that hard at anything in my life :D

Actually, scratch that, that is for 4 players max. A total of 5 is a bit tricky for what you're after. How about Terraria? There you at least have the option of exploring the depths, or building/maintaining/designing a big base (eg. tending the alchemy station and greenhouse). If someone dies and loses his/her gear, then you can all work together to escort the person to his/her body, or to secure it and have him/her teleport to your location.

Worms. It's PvP, but is easy to learn enough for it to be entertaining.

Various sandbox-y, builder-y games: Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound, Factorio (?)

Infinity engine games - at least Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale (and sequels). Everyone makes a character, a party of five sounds just right. There's also the Enhanced versions, those might be less hassle when it comes to getting the multiplayer running.

Various turn-based strategy/tactics games. I don't have specific title recommendations, but even if there isn't a single one with co-op, you could always play PvP in teams that balance out your respective levels of skill. Alternatively, find a genre you all suck at - perhaps fighting games? - and just mash :)

Worms is a good suggestion. Turn-based, easy to learn, and great, ( mostly ) family-friendly fun.

Have you tried perhaps something like Starcraft where everyone's playing on the same base/resources and each have their own objectives of what to improve/do against the enemy AI? Slightly annoying when you want to do something and suddenly you don't have the resources that WERE there a second ago though... Of course there's plenty of UMS games that use heavy scripting to make a more D&D type of game.

NeverWinter Nights maybe, assuming you have the right kinds of maps.
