Bounty Train
I won it in RickyAndersen’s giveaway, thanks again!

Once again a game for which I had to change my expectations before enjoying it. But right after that I had a real blast. So what was the matter? Well, I thought it would be a trading/managerial game about owning a railroad company set in Wild West. Well, it's certainly not a RailRoad Tycoon clone. Sure, there are trains, you have to trade, buy low, sell high etc. But it's not that you own a trading company. You can only own a single train! So while trading is a core mechanism in this game, it's definitely not about global trading, automated routes etc. which are important parts of any tycoon game. So yeah, I had to change the way I thought about the game and I'm glad that I did. Because while it was not what I expected the game turned out to be very entertaining with its own ideas.

The first thing you should know is that when I wrote about "owning a single train" I should have actually written "the train". The devs are clearly very enthusiastic about trains from that era and it adds a lot to the game. You really feel responsible for your train. It's not only about purchasing better models of locomotives and/or carriages when they become available. You constantly upgrade your train, rearrange carriages to optimize it's defensive abilities, install turrets etc. This part is a real blast!

Obviously developing your train cost a lot of money so you have to earn it. Trading is just one of the options, albeit the most common one. Your goal is to buy low and sell high but it's not that easy since the prices for various goods are constantly changing. You can always see what was the price in a given city last time you were there. If it's just one or two days ago chances are high that prices will be similar. But two weeks ago is an ancient history and you may risk a lot transporting goods which were very expensive back then but now can be even cheaper then in place you bought them. You can, however, stay up to date if you subscribe a local newspaper but that will come with a monthly fee and obviously you can't really subscribe in every city.

If you are skilled enough trading will give you a safe profit but you won't make a lot of money fast. Therefore you should try some alternatives like taking passengers (you need a special carriage for them!), doing some illegal errands (contraband, transporting of wanted criminals) or special missions which seems to be most profitable. There is, however, a little trick - to get a mission you need to have a good reputation. There are four different factions and maintaining high reputation with all of them is (almost) impossible so you should plan ahead which missions are the best for you. Reputation mechanics work very well and sometimes you will make decisions that are not that profitable right now but result in earning better reputation which will pay off in a long run.

To add extra flavor to the game there is a nice series of mini-games like trying to reach your destination as fast as possible (you have to slow down before turns otherwise your train will sustain damage) or repel some bandits. These mini-games are not very deep but still quite entertaining and well thought. Imagine my surprise when my train caught fire and a passenger that I was transporting started extinguishing it! If you transport a doctor he may help you to tend some wounds of your people!

Last but not least the campaign offer you a lot of quests that will help you to reach an ultimate goal - getting majority of shares of National Pacific Railroad before your opponent. Failing some of these quests does not mean game over but it will be more difficult to compete with your enemy. There are also some scripted events like wars which may help or hinder your operations so the game is quite interesting all the time.

I can really recommend the game just be aware it's not a tycoon type of a game but rather a hybrid of trading simulator with RPG plus some arcadey mini-games. If that sounds good for you try the game! I had a blast with it. Very nice beginning of a new gaming year ;)

finished saints row iv somewhere around 11:50 pm on the 1st. after playing through the Agents of Mayhem, SR4 is a 10/10 game compared to that shit. thank you xbox gamepass for the fixing the sour taste left that you caused, but to be fair no one forced me to play the game lmao. also thank you Joule. Ciao!!
Super Bomberman II (SNES)

Used Savestates as a soft save between sessions, used rewinds to keep things from going insane. The biggest enemy in a Bomberman game is the player. :p

(Not in. Any games I complete are casual affairs.)

Quake 1

I was surprised how short the game was, or at least felt. (But I guess Doom 1 was only about an hour of gameplay itself?) Not entirely a bad thing as the environments felt same-y and drab, but I am playing through the expansions. Quakespasm has been useful too.

I won it in adamhm’s giveaway, thanks again!

Very good Metroidvania game with a strong focus on fighting, both melee (with a giant leaf!) and with a bow. If you also consider a lot of items that grants passive or active bonuses (some spells included) you end up with significant amount of ways of ending your opponents' lives. Their numbers and types are also impressive so you really can expect a lot of action. For some people it may be discouraging, especially because enemies are respawning every time you leave a room but I must admit I had a blast fighting never ending hordes of enemies. It's essential to emphasize that even very early enemies can give you some troubles as their attack patterns can be non-trivial. Basically every time I met a new enemy I died several times before learning how to beat him/her efficiently. Even though I still had to be careful when traversing a known region - even a well-known enemy can be dangerous. For me that part worked really well, especially because backtracking (it's Metroidvania game after all) is boring if most enemies are too easy to beat.

The case of bosses is slightly worse - there too many of them and they are too similar. You can expect either bullet hell or damage-sponge boss or a combination of these two. While some of these bosses are well placed and can advance the story, others feel redundant and placed just because "it's good time for another boss fight". So that part of the game could have been better.

Backtracking itself is good (as I mentioned before, it's not boring) but can be slightly confusing. The game doesn't hold your hand so sometimes you may feel a bit lost. The map could have been a bit more helpful but in general backtracking works well.

The story is nothing special and almost non-existing. Just a few information here and there and that's it. No point talking about it any longer.

So in the end the game is a very solid Metroidvania with a clear emphasize on fighting. If that sound good for you - go for it! You should have at least as much fun as I did!

List of games finished in 2015 - 6 games - 3 GOG games and 3 PS3 games
List of games finished in 2016 - 16 games - 2 GOG games, 11 PS3 games and 3 PS4 games
List of games finished in 2017 - 15 games - 6 PS3 games and 9 PS4 games.
List of games finished in 2018 - 10 games - 4 GOG games, 1 PS2 game, and 5 PS3 games.

List of games finished in 2019 below (8 GOG games, 1 PS3 game and 2 PS4 games so far):

1 - January 3, 23:30 – My first game finished in 2019 became Xenonauts from GOG, after long break I've taken, when I've moved to my new place, two years ago. The game is excellent tribute to original Xcom games, and I've enjoyed it, despite some of the missions with Reapers were frustrating, because even if I ended my turn with lot of TUs saved for "overwatch" shots, most of my agents in most cases started to shoot at them, after they killed someone already. And that was actually the main reason, why I took such a long break from the game :(

2 - March 8, 23:30 – I have finished my first blind playthrough of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition on PS4. I have been waiting for this game more than 5 years to be released in the West, on one of my platforms, after I've found out that Tales of series exist, and is awesome. The long wait was really worth it. It will definitely not be my favourite Tales of game, like for many other people, because I was bad at combat in this game :P but I've enjoyed the story and the characters, so I hope Namco Bandai will bring more of the Japan only Tales of games to the West.

3 - April 16, 20:00 – I have just finished Earthlock from GOG. A Norwegian made jRPG. The game is nice in the combat area, but the writing is not the best point of the game. Still, not bad, and I have enjoyed the game more than enough to recommend it further. I was also able to get 100% of achievements on GOG Galaxy (in 40 hours).

4 - May 22, 22:45 – After many, many years, I have finally finished Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator. I played it for the first time around year 2000, but I've never finished it. The story is pretty solid, with the exception of the ending, but in the last 20 hours of the game, the combat gets very tedious, and there is to much of it. It kind of spoiled my enjoyment of the game as a whole, and then the ending nailed it down little bit further :P

5 - June 20, 14:15 – Having it pretty long time on my backlog, I've finished Hyperdimension Neptunia VII on PS4 today. My first playthrough ended with the most common Ascension Ending. The game is IMO much better than all previous installments. Cut-scenes are shorter, gameplay is more refined, sending out scouts is more user friendly. Can't wait for the release of Super Neptunia RPG in few days.

6 - August 8, 22:00 – I have finished my second playthrough of Tales of Symponia on PS3. I had not enough Grade to get bonus XP nor to transfer my earned Gald for New Game+, so I had to play it the classic way. With little bit of grinding for equipment and consumables for boss fights :) . I was able to finish every single sidequest and minigame, with the exception of Zelos' Gigolo title (because I've picked Kratos at the end of the game), which was a mistake during my planning phase for this playthrough. I've tried to achieve as much Titles as possible, with Kratos getting all of them, so the Platinum Trophy road is now at 54%. Game is still solid gold, with very good storyline, but it has not as enjoyable combat for me as other Tales of... titles I've played.

7 - September 24, 0:00 – After 3 years long break, I have finaly finished my Grand Campaign of Crusader Kings Complete from GOG. In 2015, I have started as one of the smallest counties in Kingdom of Hungary, as a Count of Gemer. Due to carefull planning of marriages, I have became 31 years later the new Duke of Nyitra, and 6 more years later in 1105, the almighty King of Hungary. After that, I have slowly expanded my realm to the east and south, with occasional special marriages, to get the possibility for my children to inherit other Counties and Dukedoms. 347 years later, after I've defeated Golden Horde, Bulgars and other heathens, and had few struggles with infidels of Byzantium, I had became King of another 7 countries. I've became King of Hungary, Bohemia, Khazaria, Burgundy, Croatia, Georgia, Sicily and Rus and was once crowned as Holy Roman Emperor. My kingdom had 102 direct vassals and 197 counts, dukes, bishops, and archbishops under my command. Some of them rebelious some of them loyal, but the Kingdom overcame few of their revolts and had a potential to grow more but the end of the game in 1452 came faster than I thought :P

8 - November 4, 0:00 – I have purchased STASIS: Deluxe Edition in this years Halloween sale on GOG, and I have to say, this was one of the best gaming deals this year. The atmosphere was really tense during the whole 10 hours of gameplay and the ending was unexpected. Some item puzzles were harder to crack, but 90% of the time, they were intuitive to solve. I have enjoyed the game so much, that I have purchased the deluxe content for the developers second game in the same universe called Cayne. This one, will be my next game to play for sure.

9 - November 9, 21:45 – Another game from Stasis universe finished today: CAYNE: Deluxe Edition. It was as good as previous, although much shorter. The puzzles were less complicated, although few of them gave me headaches, while trying to solve them :) . The ending was this time much more predictable, but it did not spoiled my enjoyment of the game.

10 - November 17, 16:00 – I have finished story of Reynard de la Foret in Celestian Tales: Old North as my first playthrough of this game. It's short but enjoyable game in a style of JRPG, which has some interesting plot twists for player to experience. The most surprising thing for me was, that it is one of very few games, where you do not play the hero, which has to save the world, but you play a squire, who with other pupils, helps the big generals with small tasks in the background of the comming war against a threat from The North.

11 - November 20, 16:45 – Just few days later, I have finished the Celestian Tales: Old North – Howl of the Ravager, DLC prequel to the original game. The gameplay is the same, but you play as one of the young lords of Old North, introduced in the base game. It's little bit shorter than the base game, but last two areas were for me tedious, which little bit worsened my impressions.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death. I wouldn't say this is the ideal Judge Dredd game, but it's the best one we've gotten so far. It's an FPS that seems to take after Halo a lot - you're limited to two weapons, one of which has to be your Lawgiver, and it uses the health bar + rechargeable shield system, although your shield seems about as resistant as tissue paper. The Lawgiver does include the various types of ammunition options from the comics (incendiary, high-ex, ricochet, etc.).

One thing that sets it apart from other FPSs is that you have a law-meter that goes up when you arrest people, which you accomplish by putting a few bullets in them, just enough to make them put their hands up and surrender. Then you run up and hit the action button to arrest them, which comes with a funny display with their names, crimes, and sentence. It seems like in many cases, gunning down a high-ranking enemy in an area will cause the lower-ranking mooks to all give up at once.

The campaign mode is quite short - only a few hours long - and it's mostly about the Dark Judges escaping and raising the dead around Mega City One, so you have to fight a lot of zombies and vampires. The zombies are typical shambling types that aren't very threatening, but the vampires are bullet-sponges that hop around at high speeds. I was really not having fun fighting those guys over and over. I liked fighting the gang members because you always had that tension between wanting to arrest them but also needing to not jeopardize yourself by going too softly at them.

tfishell: Quake 1

I was surprised how short the game was, or at least felt. (But I guess Doom 1 was only about an hour of gameplay itself?) Not entirely a bad thing as the environments felt same-y and drab, but I am playing through the expansions. Quakespasm has been useful too.

swsoboleski89: first Quake > all Doom games
My only gripe with Quake is the few enemies on screen compared to Doom, and the solution to that was to raise the HP on all enemies making them much harder to kill. To me, that makes every weapon in the campaign much less satisfying to use. The shotgun in Doom compared to the shotgun in Quake being the most obvious difference.

Besides that, I enjoy the mechanics and level design in Quake much, much more than that of Doom.

people say this all the time. I don't get the appeal of having 50 enemies attacking you at once.
