What's up with games running perfectly fine once, and when I try to run them the next day they just don't run at all? It happened to me once again with Driver: Parallel lines. Yesterday the game ran just fine. Today it freezes right after I try to run it, becomes unresponsive, and I have to kill iti n the task manager. Similar thing happened to me with Rogue Squadron (it at least ran when I ran the thing itself and not through galaxy) and with Moto Racer (which at least had the decency to just drop dead and not hassling me with forcing me to kill it in the task manager)

Why is this happening?
Windows updates? They happen about 10 times a day it seems and each of them are specifically design to mess your system up, no joke.

I have literally no idea. I haven't noticed any changes to anything else. And no actually noticeable update, like the updating screen when I was turning the computer off yesterday. It really pissed me off though, I just wanted to play my game :(

Nothing changed even after I verified/repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled, and uninstalled with deletion of everything (including my saves) and reinstalled. The same freezing over and over.

Have you:
Checked directplay is enabled - M$ just love turning this off.
Installed outside windows folders, e.g. Have a folder called c:/mygames and install there? UAC plays havoc with things.
If you have done that and it still happens contact support, could be a missing dependanciy such as directx or c++ extension, but wouldn't have worked first time if that was the case.

Do you have any automatic backup systemes set up - like Google Drive automatic backup? Or something like it? If one of those services is automatically backing up the folder that a game is saving information to, sometimes the game can go looking in the wrong place for the file - like in a backup location it doesn't have access to or something.

Directplay is on and I install my games on a different drive, in the galaxy folders.

I don't have any automatic backup that I know of.

Is it a Steam game ? If yes, quit and restart Steam.
I had this problem too.

it's all gog games
Maybe you chose a setting that crashes on startup ? (ingame resolution, for example)
Try deleting the game's settings file and starting it again.

I had this a little while ago trying to get my copy of Kohan 2 to run, I was overjoyed to finally get a Win 8 build running, then next time it didn't. I found that it was getting twitchy based on the contents of my CD drive, it seems that an empty drive was fine, but a disc that wasn't Kohan 2 caused issues.

If you don't have an optical drive any more, then I've been completely useless, and I apologise.

I did that. I repaired the files, uninstalled and reinstalled, uninstalled with deletion of everything and reinstalled. None of that helped.

Try getting a log file from one of the inbuilt log generators in some games. There might be a support folder in some of them, and a shell script to generate a system log.
Just as a heads up, try disabling Windows Updates. I did a long time ago, and as a friend of mine put it, you trulystart seeing colors again after you do.

I Keep on seeing people complain about windows updates screwing things up like this but me and all my friends have never seen issues with these updates at all. If anything games that never ran run ever better then before. even age of empires works for me now.
Hope your hard drive isn't failing... Maybe check its S.M.A.R.T. status, or whatever other fail detector it has.
