I'm currently in a very sad mood. I've suffered some great loss. I don't want to go into detail here, but I guess a lot of people here went through similar experiences.

Now I'm looking for "media" mirroring my current feelings and I'm pretty much covered regarding literature and and music (though I'm still open for suggestions).

But what I'm still looking for are games that convey that feelings of sadness, melancholy and loss. I don't mean utter depression (like depicted in The Cat Lady) but a more ... I don't know... detached? version of sadness.

The games I've already played that can transport this feeling are FF7, PS:T and the Witcher series. You know that "Something ends, something begins". Like the ending of LotR (books) or Ghost In The Shell. That something is irretrievably lost, but life goes on.

Sorry if I'm a little incoherent, but I'm pretty drunk right now. Still lots of thanks for any input.

I think perhaps The Walking Dead games could fit, assuming you're also open to zombies.

Oh and it's different every playthrough so you can revisit it, get about the same emotional impact but in a fresh way.

Sorry you're feeling down, I don't know what's happened but I hope things get better as soon as they can.

I mostly listen to music when I feel like that, but the one game that comes to mind is The Banner Saga as it does have a good helping of misery and sadness in it..
I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head that fit the criteria (well both Xenoblade Chronicles games kind of might but their only worth recommending if you have the means to play them)

If you run out of depressing music I can definitely help there...

When I saw the thread title, I thought of Depression Quest, but I would be cautious about recommending it to you in your current state.

Consider that, when you go to start the game, the very first paragraph is the following:

I'd recommend Montague's Mount.

Can't think of any good suggestions at the moment, but I'm sorry for your loss.

I'd recommend Chains of Satinav if you're ok with opoint & click adventure games. It's probably my favourite one. It's a beautiful bitter-sweet fairy-tale. Not of the whimsical or childish type, it's more like Tolkien's Smith of Wootton Major. It really is quite remarkable how the game balances the beauty of a fantasy world and the wistful story. And I think it's a game that might do you good, as it never gets too depressing. It's sad at times, but never wallows in it.

Also, and this is quite important, it's a well made adventure game, that can be finished without any walkthroughs, so you won't find your experience impeded by frustration and looking for answers to nonsensical puzzles. It can all be figured out and flows naturally.

Not sure, but maybe Bioshock Infinite and Shadow of the Colossus would fit.

Master of Orion 3 makes me very sad...

If you have a Wii, I would recommend Fragile. Otherwise watch the cutscenes on Youtube and listen to the soundtrack if that helps.

Also, that concept of "something ends, something begins" sounds like Gears of War 3 although that may not be a "sadness/melancholy" game.

I will say that I recommend talking to someone close about your troubles or playing something action-packed. That sometimes cheers me up.

My recommendations:

Fran Bow: A metaphorical feast, mix of sweetness and disturbing stuff resulting in an extremely charming and unique experience, it will take your mind off things and transport you to another place

Syberia 1 & 2: Melancholic without being too heavy; a feeling of loneliness but it's more poetic/quirky than depressing
