dtgreene: Then there's the fact that, on game specific forums, technical questions seem to be a lot more common than game related topics. I would like to see more discussion on the sub-forums about the actual games! (The Elder Scrolls series sub-forum could you some love, for example; we need more discussion about the early games in that series!)

lanipcga: I agree - even though I don't recall seeing anyone discourage casual discussions in most of my preferred subforums. My ability to help with technical problems is very limited, so I derive much enjoyment from simply talking about the games in question. The QFG section has some nice threads covering trivia and lore, while the Lords of the Realm and Constructor sections have helpful threads dedicated to strategy. I don't frequent the Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale sections, but I'm surprised to hear about those comments. Passionate, on-topic discussions should be viewed as integral to this community.
Different game specific forums are different; the QFG section is one of the better ones. I would also consider the Might and Magic subforum to also be good.

The BG and IWD subforums (and those of most other semi-modern AD&D-based games) are not so great in my experience. The Elder Scrolls subforum doesn't get enough traffic, and the Ultima one is almost as lacking in terms of traffic (particularly if you exclude topics about technical issues), though at least I haven't seen garbage posts in those subforums.

So, to summarize:
M&M, QFG: Good
BG, IWD: Toxic
TES, Ultima: Empty

As another note, I have posted, to the Dust: An Elysian Tail subforum, a rather advanced gameplay question that has received no replies at all.

LootHunter: After some consideration, I think that this piece of news is not as bad as it sounds. After all there IS already eating disoder (several kinds in fact) and yet no one prohibits food or forbids eating.
One particularly well-known eating disorder involves the person not eating at all, and therefore would not be prevented if one were to prohibit eating; in fact, such a law would make it worse (though such a constant, unconditional ban never seriously become law in the first place, and no sane court would allow it to stand).

I suppose it's a rising addiction but there are far worse issues that are barely talked about like I don't know.. people working too much even though productivity keeps increasing and we sleep worse too due to financial stress, social expectations and excessive exposure to artificial lighting.
Muahahaha! This is better than drinking and watching bland telly shows.

tinyE: I can't think of one thing that can't be overdone.
How about a perfect score, the speed of light, absolute zero or infinity? But I guess these are the ultimate amount/number of something so they may not count.
Not sure gamers are insane, but there's something on the other way round. Gaming does seem to attract a damn lot of people with mental issues. This may be blur the question quite a bit.

Actually, there are different infinities, some bigger than others, and it turns out that there is no biggest infinity (or else there would be a contradiction); there's always a bigger one.

Okay, that's a decent explanation but can infinity be overdone?
Now that we are talking about madness I can only imagine how many people would go insane if Steam removed something most rational people find a stupid idea. I'm talking about... achievements
The universe has a sick sense of irony. Twitter and comic book and gaming sites are now blowing up with the news that an innocent guy was shot to death by cops after a Call of Duty player tried to pull a swatting prank but sent the wrong address.

Crosmando: So what about spending endless hours glued to your mobile phone like normies do, is that a mental disorder too?
that's one addiction I never have to worry about.

I strongly think so. On the dummie side of it, you got people who fork 6$-10$ for a movie ticket, but then spend half the movie texting on their phone, annoying all nearby moviegoers in the process (I hope its a really important conversation they are having like their mother dying, but my guess is probably not).

Then, on the downright patently stupid, you got a moron texting on her phone while she is standing smack in the middle of a parking lot entrance next to a busy street (I witnessed that one personally, I honked so hard she nearly dropped her phone) or falling between two subway wagons because she was so busy texting she didn't notice she wasn't aligned with the door, but rather between the wagons (that one I read in the paper).

Yes, natural selection is still alive and well. I try to be understanding, but when I see stuff like this, I become angry and welcome the idea that some people really should die before they get to reproduce. Call me selfish, but I want people that are this oblivious gone.

I'm actually surprised the WHO is only declaring it an addiction now. I read reports of studies on this topic more than ten years ago and already then it was pretty clear that video games can be as addictive and devastating as various drugs.

Okay stop it with the abbreviations!

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why the hell Pete Townsend gives a shit about gaming.

I think that you have indeed proven it can be.
