Not really familiar with the site (not really ringing any bells), albeit I'm sure I've sometimes downloaded something there, by being linked from elsewhere.
However, for me the big blow would be an announcement that a place like
The Patches Scrolls would be closed down. Whenever I've tried to play some old PC retail game I have, the first thing has been to head to TPS to see if there are any updates for the said game. If there are not, then most probably there never were (or at least they can't be found elsewhere either). To me TPS appears to have the biggest archive of official (and sometimes unofficial) patches/updates for various older PC retail games.
If I could somehow download the whole TPS file database (at least patches for English versions of games) to my home machine, I would. Not sure how big it is though, several terabytes at least?
All this also reminds me one can't always expect everything to always be available online. People who preserve these things are just normal people with some vested interest, people like you and me. If everyone assumes someone else does the archiving for them (and everyone else)... as the saying goes, you are just an ass with an umption.
EDIT: And now that I decided to check that TPS is still online... who knows how long it will be, with news like these?
http://www.patches-scrolls.de/news/72947 Dang, I wonder if I should start going through all my old PC retail games (those which GOG doesn't sell already), and make sure I have downloaded all relevant updates for them from TPS? I have already done that for lots of my games over the years, and keeping them stored also on my own hard drives.
