BATTLETECH

I have the non-Galaxy version of the game installed.

On every startup, it attempts to access something out on the internet that's located at an IP that traces to Amazon AWS, not much more specific than that.

If I refuse to allow it outbound access, the game crashes.

This occurs around the time the Altas skull appears in the startup.

There is no crash/error log generated by the game when this happens.

The Windows crash report indicates that it is an APPCRASH linked to Galaxy64.dll.

If I don't have Galaxy installed and I'm not signing in for Multiplayer, why the heck is the game trying to access a server somewhere, and why does refusing it access to that server cause it to crash?

Are we supposed to guess the game? :P

Huh, I thought I had that in there -- It's Battletech. Will edit it in if I can, as well.
Don't know the game you are describing, but I have "experienced" similar annoying problems for several games sold on gog, even with a non-galaxy installer, for single player.

And there are several topics about the subject, forced silent telemetry.

The whole situation is getting tiresome.

So much for "no DRM" I guess.

Puts us about 1 step from GOG outright lying, doesn't it?

No problem. :D
I'm not surprised , since the game was build on the Unity 5 engine .

what happens if you start the game being offline? (meaning with deactivated wifi/lan?) (ya meaning "true" offlline instead of fire wall rules)

I agree, but it's not only gog but also some devs and game engines: for instance, Unity3D has a plugin (or something like that) which is Unity Analytics, aka telemetry, activated by default, and it's up to the developer to remove or deactivate it.
I wouldn't mind this kind of things for a In-Dev games, or at least asking the customer to agree with it, up to him/her to activate this (like Pillars of Eternity for instance).

But since more and more Unity3D games are shipped with a version > 5.6, it seems that more and more devs are using this, and gog doesn't force them to deactivate Unity Analytics.

I will try this tonight and report back.

One of the first thing every game with Galaxy features does is it checks if you have Galaxy installed or not. It does so by trying to communicate to the Galaxy service listening on localhost (127.0.0.1). If you block this connection attempt with a firewall every GOG game with Galaxy features will crash on startup.

This bug has been known for years but GOG does not acknowledge it as a bug since in their opinion it's your fault if you prevent a game's normal operation with security software.

You should be able to block anything else though. Just make sure the firewall does not block 127.0.0.1 for GOG games.

...

The address that my firewall says the game is trying to access is external, in an IP range used by Amazon AWS / Cloudfront when I look it up.

Also, it does this every time I start up the game, even though I have let it connect previously.

I wonder if there's a registry entry that can be edited to fool the game into think it checked and found no Galaxy install.

What do you expect, your shopping on a pale imitation of steam, if steam do it, gog will do it, just slightly worse and it will cost you more.
I gave you my answer in another thread.

There was this thread about Fallout New Vegas and Internet connection problems, maybe you'll find some answers there.

Games phoning home has nothing to do with GOG.
