I tried to install the music patch for HoMM 2, as well as the patch for HoMM3. Whatever I try, I always get the "Game installation not found" error. I used Galax for installing the games. Could this be the problem? Are there any known workarounds?

And yes, the games are not located on C. I tried to copy the patches to the install directories - to no avail :(

For HoMM2, this can happen when you try to install the DOS patch for the Windows version or vice versa.

And yes, it could be a Galaxy problem. Did you try just installing it without it?

Put the file in game folder and try installing from there.

The patch for HoMM 3 is automatically applied by the Galaxy client.
Thx for your replies!

I tried both, the DOS and the Windows patch, neither worked.

By install directory I meant the game folder. The patches didn't work from there, neither.

I'll try to reinstall the game manually/outside of galaxy and see if that helps.

@Grargar: sorry, I saw your reply just now. Is there any way to check if the patch has been automatically applied? I don't see any version information within the game. Heroes3.exe sais it's version 4.0.0.0. The patch on the other hand claims to be 2.0.1.17. Is this patch a totally outdated version or is this some different kind of versioning?

Thx for any advice.

There are two version numbers that GOG is using. One concerns the installer (2.0.1.17) and the other concerns the in-game version. Galaxy is usually applying the latest version, hence no need for an update.

As for Heroes of Might and Magic 2, I suspect that GOG hasn't updated the Tracks patches to be compatible with Galaxy's version of the game, so you can't currently install them with it.
Is it possible to unzip and manually place files in folder?
Yeah, I tried that. But the file structure is kind of weird. It contains the following files:

.rsrc (folder)
-- GROUP_ICON
-- ICON
-- MANIFEST
-- RCDATA
-- STRING
-- VERSION
.text
.itext
.data
.bss
.idata
.tls
.rdata
CERTIFICATE
[0]

[0] is the largest file and seems to contain the actual data. But I can't further unzip it.

All patches seem to have the same structure. So it's nothing you can directly unpack to your game. Some further processing seems to be required.

For HoMM3, If the installer is already version 2.0.1.17, then you don't need to patch. The patch is only for installer version 2.0.1.16
I'm fairly positive that Galaxy uses the latest installer (2.0.1.17) version.

(I'm assuming this is the patch you mean:
http://www.gog.com/forum/heroes_of_might_and_magic_series/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_new_universal_update)
Unless it's something else?

For HoMM 2, I'd say download the installer (withot using Galaxy), install the game, apply patch and see if that works.
(Again, I'm assuming you mean this music patch?

It is optional and doesn't come pre-installed. And since it was released some time ago, it is very possible that it is not compatible with Galaxy installation.

Galaxy is actually using a newer version (2.0.1.21) so, as I said above, HoMM 3's patch is not necessary.
Ok, thanks a lot for clearing that up. Yes, I was talking about the Universal Patch 2.0.3 for HoMM III.

I will try to install HoMMII manually and then apply the music patch.

P.S. This really is an awesome community, here. Very friendly and helpful people. This is exceptional! Thank you very much!

You're welcome. Yes it is. Let us know if it works.
That did the trick! In order to be able to launch from Galaxy, I simply copied the music from the new installation to the old (Galaxy) installation. Now I can launch the game from Galaxy and still have the original music :)

Thx for the help!

GOG has released an update for Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Gold. Specifically:

Update (27.07.2015)

We have added the German version of Heroes of Might and Magic 2: Gold. A big "Thank you!' goes out to Rungen for the German version of the game.
The DOS Music selector patch has been incorporated into the main installers for all three languages. After updating via GOG Galaxy or installing from the offline GOG installers, you will see a "Music selector" item in your Start menu just under the shortcut for the main game.
The Windows version of the patch remains the same.
